Hi Everyone.
I just tried to repaint my Handbrake and Auto Transmission Handles. They were grey and warn and I wanted them a nice black. So I went and got some gloss black spay paint from super cheap. Then I used metho on the handbrake and transmission handles to clean them for painting. I then painted them.
I allowed to dry and they were fine. Nice to touch and nothing coming off. They also looked fantastic. I then put some armorall on them for protection from the sun.
Problem is after being in the sun during the day, they paint became sticky. So I went and got a wet cloth and it all basically came off with some elbow greece. I am really quite pissed that all my hard work went up in smoke.
Can someone please tell me what I did wrong. Was it the way I prepared the surfaces for painting. Was it the paint I used? Was it that I only let it dry for a day? I am new to this and want to get it right so I can paint it and will be perfect and not come off no matter how hot it gets! Thank you all so much for your replies.

Thanks mate, do I need to do anything to it to before I put this paint on. Or is it just put on and go? I was going to use Vinyl spray to begin with but after reading some things on here, I figured it might not stick very good to it.
I figured I had used to wrong paint and but peoples replies on here on how much of an idiot I am, it must be true lol

Use some prepsol 1st up and clean the shifter as much as you can buddy.
Then start wacking on some coats on VHT Vinyl Dye (in a can) as it works pretty well.
I did my whole interior using that stuff and so far its been really good. I would probably do a fair few coats on the gearshifter though and let it dry properly before each coat.

I think to really get it clean you have to VERY lightly sand it with 400+ wet and dry to remove the top layer of sealant and let the dye penetrate the vinyl/leather. Mitch if you are really keen to do it properly try the products from http://www.birdsall-leather.com.au/ I have used both and I think the birdsall products will outlast the vht dye but there is a lot more work involved. How are you going about painting the buttons?

You can brush it on with a good paint brush. Also use a paint strainer. They are only $15 on ebay for 50 of them. If you are after a good leather hand brake boot cover check out the group buy section.

UPDATE:
Hi Guys,
Thanks for all your help.
I striped it back using some prepsol(OMG its like magic, i love that stuff). Then used Vinyl Dye and it came up like a $million. No rubbing off, no stickiness, perfect. I am very very happy with the results.
