Hi everyone. I have been reading up on this a bit but am still unsure how its done. I have seen a few photos of soarers with after market handbreaks ie wood grain, chrome. and I have been told the only way to get it to come off is to cut it them weld a aftermarket handbreak onto the existing leaver. is this really the only way to get it off? has anyone taken theirs off? and how? I am not refering to the handbreak boot, that just slides off.

Hi Mate,
If you want to change the colour. You will need to clean it with Prepsol and then use some vinyl paint or dye. I did this with mine and was very happy. Then I changed my mind and went a purchased one of those handbrake covers off ebay. They fit any soarer and looks great on mine. I got a black one.
They are really cheap and yes fit no worries. Just need some double sided tape to stick it down. Or you can get them from import scene if you want the high end ones.

You can also make your own. The rubber under the leather is moulded to the metal below, so it is pretty much a case of destroying it to get it off. This one I machined out of stainless steel.

Picture is a bit small, but I bought this SAAS handbrake cover from Supercheap. I whittled down the factory rubber handle with a Stanley knife until it just fitted over. I slipped the SAAS cover over and used the screws provided to secure it, but glue would have worked too.

Note: the SAAS cover was originally wood and brushed aluminium, but while the wood was a reasonably close match, the aluminium did not match any other part of the interior, so I covered it with gray pleather. It was around $30 if I recall.
