that is a really good question, i think one of the main differences would be the airflow readings as the VVT-i 1j is airflow meter controlled compared to map sensor controlled. but as for the rest, i don't think so. do you have a connector in the drivers foot well, over near the little light. that is where the OBDII port sits.

It does have a round port but not the same as OBDII, I wonder how hard it would be to convert it? Would need a VVTI Soarer & multimeter to copy the wiring.

Thanks Ty,
The shift knob is not an easy fit by any means, you would be better off just buying a levoc shifter. I think they are a straight swap.

google 'levoc'
http://www.importscene.com.au/category124_1.htm
I had a Levoc and eventually binned it. I prefer Rob's shift knob as it's metal and a bit more modern. the Levoc looks like it comes out of a 1989 Lincoln.

Coincidentally, I bought one of the shift knobs shown in Rob's picture just to mess around with. So far I have:

- sanded and etch primed it in grey
- sprayed satin black
- I have 'mated' it to a cut-down shift lever

It's hard to explain, but essentially I have shortened the white plastic button in the top of the shifter to cater for the shorter shifter, and narrowed the metal shift lever to allow the chrome shift trim ring of the new knob to fit in the right place - essentially where the two screw holes are in the factory rod. This trim ring has been bonded to the shift rod with Selleys epoxy putty. This has then been sanded and painted to an appropriate colour and shape. I intend to fit the shift rod to the car as one piece. Then the main body of the new knob simply screws into the trim ring, and providing you have bonded the trim ring in the right place works as OEM. just shorter, more modern and satin black. Overdrive needs to be moved elsewhere, but who cares....?

I can post piccies if you like.

Ty see the new thread just below titled : 'New Shift Knob'.

I would strongly suggest that you get a shift rod from a wrecker and take your time to get it right. Then if you stuff it up, you then have the OEM bits to fall back on.

Here is a couple of pictures of my shifter that I did a couple of years back. The overdrive switch was from a modified height control switch. Note this was also an EMV equipped soarer before I made some changes.
