Hey folks, so i have just brought myself some woodgrain pieces and im looking at restoring them before i put them on. I have read a lot of threads about doing it and some say its bad idea to try yourself and that you should just take it to a paint shop. If this is the case what kind of paint shops would do this kind of work and has anyone done this before? if so how much did it cost, roughly? thanks any feedback appreciated.

I didn't restore mine I got mine painted.

The wood had gone milky in a few spots and looked a bit tired.

I priced getting them carbon fibred at Mod Coating and that was around $500AUD. I spent a couple of hundred NZ and had them done piano black.

There would be a lot of work in stripping the lacq
eur and getting the wood restained and coated.

Matt.

ditto. I did the same, piano black. Stuffed around for a while doing polishing and sanding and polishing and sanding and polishing... it was a pain in the ass.

You can also try CONTACT *yes the stuff mummy covered your school books in* can get plenty of colours and if done well can look nice.

Okayyyyyyyyy..... So i started sanding and polishing straight after i typed up that last post at 9.43 Sanding and polishing by around 9.50. It is now 12.10 and i have just completed the two small pieces from the doors. WHAT A MISSION! I must say they came up a hell of a lot better though and i don't seem to of gone through the veneer or whatever its called. But holy crap that's an effort! The rest could take some time! I will have guns the size of Arnie's in "pumping iron" by the time im done!

There's nothing wrong with having a go yourself. If you want to ruin the wood with paint, take it to a paint shop. Otherwise, use some 1000 grit and go carefully, especially near folds (as the veneer is very thin and the backing wood can be exposed). There's nothing new about veneer, it's a way to spread rare good wood a long way (and you only really look at the surface of the wood anyway). The Soarer stuff is top shelf, hence my disgust at the idea of painting over it.

Hey mike, thanks for that. I never really wanted to paint over it, i guess i thought people were taking it to paint shops to get it professionally re-coated with timber stain. Seemed a little odd. Seemed like more of a cabinet makers job. Then i court along. Im thinking of dedicating today to sanding back even more because there are still a few white spots and im thinking of re-coating it with a darker stain. At the moment i think it looks stupid on the black interior. I have seen alot of black interiors on this site with the woodgrain but it all appears to be darker and looks so sweeeeeeeeeeett! haha. Cheers

You're right Steve, it's a job for a French polisher or cabinetmaker. The reference to paint shops was mild sarcasm on my part, it would be where the Maple was painted over.

To stain the Maple a darker shade, you need to take all the original polyurethane coating off to expose the wood veneer (without going down to the lighter wood backing). Not an easy job! Worth trying, just go easy on the stain, better to build the shade you want than hide the fabulous grain under a thick layer of opaque gunk. Other than that, you might try a darker shade of polyurethane which would avoid the patchy effect from not removing all the old polyurethane coating (although you do need to get rid of a decent thickness, to get rid of the age-related milkiness).

I'm pretty passionate about nice wood, having been a shooter in a past life, with beautiful walnut and mesquite wooden stocks on my rifles. Restored a few oldies myself, too.

Ok people so after my efforts with the restoration of my wood grain pieces i decided to talk to my uncle (the cabinet maker) who was more then helpful. I 1st of all took them up to his work shop and we spent about half an hour just sanding them back a little more and we had a go at re-coating them with a darker stain. The stain we were using didn't stick to the glossy finish so he said he would have a talk to his painter about them. 2 weeks later and presto! Looking like brand new. His painter said that after years of being in the car all the Armour all and cleaning products etc leaves wood grain with the infamous "MILKY APPEARANCE" All he used to remove this was simple prep sol!!! is this the answer to peoples problems with wood grain? The painted then did a 2 pack job on them, not exactly sure what that is and gave them back to my uncle for re staining! They came up really nice. In the sun they now have a very slight redish tinge and i was more after a nice dark brown but hey they still look amazing! hear are some photos. I will add more once i have put them back in the car. All up it cost me a bottle of wine for my uncle! haha sweet.

While your woodgrain pieces look nice of themselves, Steve, it seems to me you've lost the grain and fiddleback that Birdseye Maple is famous for. Indeed, it doesn't really look like wood any more, although the photos may not do them justice.

Hey mike, photos don't to do much justice for them! In person the woodgrain is still quite visible! They are a little darker then I wanted them! But still very happy! They were not in the best shape whEn I got them so Im very happy how they have come up! I only paid about 60 dollars for them originally so for that very satisfied. Thanks mate

If you're happy with them, great news, Steve. No doubt they look better than cloudy old pieces. I did up a set for our last Soarer- it's not easy. While I wasn't overly happy with my result, it was heaps better than the plastic (non-woodgrain) trim the car originally had.

I didn't think that the wood was real wood. Bought a kit for the rest of the dash etc from a Yank but was not happy. The colour didn't match and it was for a 2.5 so didn't have the emv bits. I think there is a kit for a metallic burr walnut kit that is a better match but can't find it on this internet thingy. Anyone point me in the right direction?

Ooops! Have just managed to find the kit at Importsscene. It looks good but is a lot more expensive and doesn't have as many bits. ie for the door openers, key bezel, heater vents etc. Has anyone fitted this and how was it?
