Hey guys and girls

I was taking off the centre wood grain panel on my dash tonight, following all the instructions on here to do it step by step. And the Friggin thing wont come off.

It seems to be stuck where the glovebox button and key lock is, it is comming off everywhere else with ease. What pisssed me off so much about it was the aircon/heater vent surround was in perfect condition before i tried it and now the farken thing is cracked in the middle at the top of the surround above the key lock of the glovebox.

So I am wondering if anyone can shed some light on this for me? has anyone experienced this, is there a screw or a clip i have missed, although i have followed every step from the instructions on the forum. Its a 1994 model JZZ31, not sure if it makes any diff, but if i pull it it is almost like there is a nut or a screw holding just that part near the button to the left of the passenger vent. The surround is sticking to the key hole is what it looks like. I have put my hand behind there and i cant feel anything.

Can some one please help a brother out here

Nathan, I had the same thing happen to me two weeks ago (broke a perfectly good centre airvent also). There is a little clip that holds the glove box lock to the centre airvent surround which causes this problem. It seems that on most cars this clip either breaks or bends out of the way... if it doesn't you encounter a problem. You can undo the two (or possibly three I can't remember) nuts with a short socket although it's hard work. I found it was only possible by putting the socket on the nut and then connecting the arm as the bolt are quite long and fowled on the 1/2" connector I was using.

Gday Adam

I got the 3 nuts off, or are you talking about the nuts that hold the glovebox button? I have gotten all of the nuts that hold the panel off, it is just stuck to that place, so how do i unclip this thing?

Cheers for your help man

The tut lists three nuts that hold the woodgrain to the dash... sometimes these are normal nuts and sometimes they are wingnuts. There is ALSO some nuts (2 or 3) which hold the glovebox lock to the dash... the lock is attached to the centre airvent by a small clip at the bottom (the tut assumes this clip will fail either by breaking or bending)... the centre airvent is attached to the woodgrain by some screws.

The solution is to either tackle the clip (not even sure this is possible) or unscrew the lock.

OK Sweet thanks mate, I will tackle the clip and let you know, maybe someone can benefit from it in the future and not break the surround like i did. Yeah the 3 nuts that hold the panel are off, everything else is off just the stupid clip now, so i may tackle that and then if not i will try to unscrew the lock.

Cheers mate

OK guys Adam was right on the money, there is a clip that has been left out of the tutorials on how to remove the woodgrain panel. It was easier to remove the lock than try to figure out where the clip was. But sit tight and I will post up some pics very soon of the culprit so hopefully anyone else doing it will not go through the grief i did. LOL

Ah, prior bodgery - the bain of used car ownership.

I spent two hours replacing the rear shocks on my wifes car on Saturday because whoever the git was who did it last time had totally overtightend the right hand bottom bolt (must have used a rattle gun I think). I ended up using a 1.5 meter extension on a breaker bar, and that caused the captive nut to spin in its housing shredding it! In the end I hammered an old screwdriver into the housing and that gave it enough grip to get it off. Left hand, remove old unit and strip, build up new unit with old spring etc & re-fit, 30 minutes... right hand unit same, 1.5 hours! ARGHHH!

its a prick. the thread of my woodgrain kept spinning while i was turning the nuts, but the clip behind the vent was no biggie, i just broke it as i removed the damn thing..i was past caring at that stage and besides my vent was cracked and i was buying a new one. i dont know how to do it properly though, but i feel your pain.
