As the thread title suggests, the passenger door lock actuator wont unlock, but it locks just fine. You can hear something moving inside the actuator when it recieves the unlock signal but nothing happens.

I had the door trim off to fix a rattle today and checked there does not seem to be anything missing or broken externally on the actuator, so my question is...

1) Can the actuator be pulled apart and repaired (some I have seen in the past are not repairable)

OR

2) Am I better off just fitting a known good unit

P.S - to the mechanic who pulled the door trim off my car last time and broke all the tabs and overtightend all the screws and cracked the plastic - you sux.

Hi Cameron,
I had this same problem my LH door lock has only locked not unlocked electronically for about a year. Last weekend I bit the bullet and pulled the lock out could find no fault with it so I put it back. It now works perfectly! All I can think of is there must have been a loose connection.

Hi Cameron,

The answer to your question is, yes the actuator can be dismantled.

Your problem most likely is the mechanical gear, which is driven by the reversing locking motor. This gear is spring loaded to protect the electric motor, but it wears, so that eventually when locking, it goes overcentre and jams so that when you go to unlock it it won't. I have had this happen on my car and the only way to fix it is to replace it. They can be bought for approx.$50 S/hand.

The modified LH units that I do are all checked for this feature along with the door unlock micro swith (door open warning).

Hope this helps.

Replace the entire unit or the gear?

What happens if someone sends you a mechanism that isn't working properly?

Peter,

Replace the complete actuator. They can be bought s/hand for approx $50-$60.

Customers are asked if their original unit locks/unlocks electrically OK, before modified actuators are posted out. If I receive one that doesn't work, I check it out and if it can't be fixed the customer loses the deposit they paid ($60). I am happy to return the unit if required.

The actuators are electrically checked when received and also after the modification has been done. Fortunately these actuators are very reliable, with very few problems encountered so far.
