A socket rolled into the air-con ducting under my passenger seat 2 years ago and it has recently reminded me of its presence by rolling around alot more when I go around corners. I've tried threading a wire coathanger up there to try and snag it but have failed to get it. I can't see very far up with a torch either.
It's starting to drive me nuts because whenever I hear something rolling while turning a corner my brain still instinctively tells me to grab it from whatever it's going to fall off from..!

Reminds me of when I had all the spark plugs out of my roadbike and accidentally dropped a 10mm nut down one of the plug holes into the combustion chamber. I was just about to pull the whole head off the thing when I thought what about a magnet? Went to Supercheap and bought one on a bendy flex type rod, cost me i think $9. Best $9 I spent because it came out first try! saved me days of work if i had to pull the head off! Since then ive used it heaps to retrieve similar lost metallic items. VERY handy to own.

duct tape a vacuum nozzle onto the vent its self, or something similar so you get a good seal around the vent, switch on, hopefully suck the bastard up?

I have one that is the size and shape of a pen, but telescopes out car aerial size to about 1m in length, and I bought one for my father that has a flexible piece on the end. an invaluable tool that has saved me many headaches, I would recommend getting one even if you try shane's idea.

ive had a few close calls with this too. a bit of preventative maintenance might be in order - in the form of some fly screen or something stuck over the damn thing?
