i know this has been covered 10million times but im in a hurry so quick question: will the VHT vinyl dye work on the poo brown center console, the thing with the volume knob on it? if not then what do people use to make it black? can a new one be purchased from toyota?

I did my centre console with VHT a few weeks ago no problems. You just have to make sure like all parts of the interior that it is cleaned properly with some wax and grease remover. Preparation is the key.

I would use a plastic paint on that one mate if i was you.
Make sure you clean it up nicely and use a plastic primer also AND finish it with a clear coat. Will look just lovely. As for the brown volume knob.... just leave it, you hardly notice it.

though VHT dye is good for all the other poo brown stuff, like the gear lever? im think i might not actually get VHT, and get some of that birdsall stuff instead, as the results from that look better than factory

very mature Nathan :p well after looking up the birdsall stuff, looks like im going VHT gloss black cause birdsalls gonna take too long. might even fibreglass some of my door trims for reinforcements

I've used vinyl dye on many of my restorations before. and recolored every surface from velor to hard plastics. And i even did my leather steering wheel in my new (well old but new to me) soarer last night. It came up a treat.
I've used a few different brands and they all work fine. I used motorspray I think last night.
I would have to agree with Steve and James on the preparation. I even like to wipe down my surfaces with Thinners. As degreaser will not remove silicone, which is prevalent in many interior cleaners, and make the dye blotch.
I more tip use matt or satin. Gloss is too "in you face". Unless thats the look your going for.

Ali, what you need to do is sand the vinyl/leather with a very fine sand paper first to remove the protective coating applied from the factory, however I wouldn't do that on the gear lever. You may fray the stitching. I did my interior over a year ago with vht and it's still looking good but I will soon be working on another interior with the product from birdsall which will give better results. My centre armrest is starting to look pretty bad but everything else is fairing quite well. Check out my thread. http://soarercentral.com/sc-forum/messages/284/292241.html?1247123982
Joe Alliano's, the best diy interior I've seen on here and he used the birdsall dye. He told me less than a year ago that it was still looking and he did it in 06. The dye was developed for horse saddles so it's made to take abuse and last.

Hey Ali, remember that you can have the shifter retrimmed in new leather for $60 through ATUC. Comes up a million bucks. May be an option for you if the VHT doesnt take?

woodgrain is going bye bye. its going to be covered by black carbon fibre looking vinyl:

Ali any chance you could do a bit of a tute with how you pulled the rest of the interior apart as well as the one for the dash? It could be something well worth archiving.

i pussied out trying to pull the dash out, because it was 6.30 and getting dark. will take pics of other parts when i put them back on, if i remember. also i couldnt get the parcel shelf off, even after researching it for 10 mins on here and clublexus. it just feels like its going to break, so i left it alone
