I'm trying to remove the steering wheel in order to get the speedo cluster out. I have followed the tutorial (which by the way, has photos of a manual controlled steering column, not an electric model like in my UZZ31, so the nut locations are slightly different)

As seen in the photo below, I have removed the airbag, disconnected the wiring, and loosened the centre nut on the spindle.

When pulling on the wheel it feels like it is flexing somewhat as though it's attached to a bugger of a spring, but I don't understand why it is so stubborn. How exactly is it gripping the centre spindle so well?

put the nut back on but leave it loose.

put a pillow between you and the wheel and pull hard.

get a mate to hit the nut hard with a hammer while you are pulling the wheel. be careful you do hit yourself in the face.

Thanks, Tom. A pillow is a good idea; I was prepared for it coming off suddenly but was aiming the wheel at my chest instead of my face.

Steering wheels are designed to grip well onto their spindle and not come off with normal force. Do not pull it back with your hands as chances are you wont do much.

You need a Puller, those to threads on either side of the center spindle are to attach the puller to the steering wheel

Otherwise, put the Nut on and leave it loose but ensure it is on a few turns so not to damage the thread, then hit the nut with a hammer.

I'd by a cheap universal puller set (say $20 from you favourite autoparts shop). It will come off dead easy, and you will have ne for next time, or to help a mate.

If you are any good with a drill you could make one out of some scrap steel and some long bolts, but for the effort, just buy one.

I've done many without a puller....then I bought one. 20 bucks well spent. Makes it much gentler on the wheel/column and much less violent of a process.

dont hammer any nut incase you damage the thread. Its a possibilty not worth risking.

nathan this is a common and well used method for releasing shafts. Hitting the nut squarely will not do any damage.
