Concluding a thread that was started on ALSC, I can confirm that the part 88926-24030 filter for the rear-mounted air purifier did arrive from Penrith Toyota (imported by them), fit the car and cost only $165 including freight. Perhaps it is the 88926-24040 part for '91-93 Soarers which costs that $500 and can not be found anywhere.
That took me only about five months to resolve. Flushed with success, I think I will replace the under-dash filters (part 88508-24010) which I have previously only cleaned. The vivid contrast between the old and new air filters at the back was enough to convince me. I wonder if the evidently chain-smoking Japanese owner ever changed them at all. I gather the under-dash ones are much easier to find.

For what?
I think you may have misunderstood me. I meant they should be easier to find at the parts dealer. I found them under the dash without any difficulty when I washed them four times the day after I bought the car, back in January.

IF you have an air-purifier, it is located under the rear parcel shelf, and is accessed inside the boot, and you'll see an oblong sorta access panel, behind which resides the filter.

hey lads i had trouble with the air con smelling like a wet towel and cigarete smoke i found out that it is a bactaria that is produced when the ac has been run for a long time on the recerc setting i was told to close all vents inside the car put the ac on full and cold but on the outside air setting this is suposed to get rid on the bactaria which it did i also pulled the under dash filters out washed and cleaned them and while they where out i sprayed the whole interior with meguiars car odor eliminator which worked a treat on the smoke smell then i bought an ambi per air filter broke the top off and tipped the liquid on the car air filters placed them back in and cranked the ac for 10min on high with the doors shut the nice smell has been penetrated into the interior it is a bit strong for a week or so but it is worth it after that

No i'm still alive. Chanel no. 5 actually. A bit on the high side really.I would say the ambi filter stuff would be better. But i do like the smell of Chanel no. 5 but preferably on woman.

Here is a photo of one each of the old and new under-dash air conditioning filters. I emphasise that the upper one was vigorously washed several times with detergent and then left in the hot Canberra sun (in January) to bleach out and murder bugs. That was as good as I could do.
I had to take a couple of shots to get the contrast down so the new filter did not merely look like a white sheet. I figured that I buy new filters for the engine without sweating on it so I can afford $97 on a pair of clean ones for me too.
