The answer to this might be bleeding obvious, but what is this red thing (pic from a tute on reepa.com) in the clips under the glovebox? i've got the same clips in my car and I always wondered what they were used for.

There used to be an emergency flare there. Being 15 years old now, you really don't want one. Picture a flare accidentally discharging inside the car!

In Japan it was mandatory for us to have a flare in our car at all times to pass JCI..
I attached a slim small folder type deal to hold receipts for all my purchases. I never used cheques, only my check card.. so thats where I kept my receipts.

Wow... that wasn't the answer I was expecting. A flare?!

I think I might actually use it for a torch holder. Or a small umbrella, or bicycle pump or maybe a tyre iron for when someone dings my car.

most of them are just flogged from the cars when they are sold at auction in Japan, but ive found two in past cars i imported. They really do go quite well at parties / soccer matches and the like !

Haha, lets see Pen ban you now! Perhaps you should have picked Ron "Chopper" Jeremy :P

& Yes, the clips are used for a flare, I've still got mine, haven't really been bothered to use it.

The Jaycar 5Watt Luxeon LED torch is a perfect fit (expensive but a great torch). It also fulfills the function of the tyre lever, it's a big, heavy tough sucker!

Highly doubt you'd be able to get a flare from Toyota. I can't think of any new car that comes with one from the factory in Australia.

Try military signal flares! Popped a few about 6 months ago at a barbeque in the back yard as we'd just had a blackout. Lit up like a christmas tree, cops weren't impressed though, especially as they had emergency homing beacons in them that I wasn't told about

A useful (handsfree) torch which fits the flare clips well is this military-style one. Comes with a set of colour filters (in the end cap), so could be used as a warning light etc. About $10 at your local "disposal" or camping shop. Takes 2 AA batteries.

Hahaha! I was looking at a Soarer for sale the other day with a friend, and he pointed the red cylinder out to the owner asking what it was. The owner didn't have a clue, and said it was there when he had bought the car.

I (not having read this at the time) said half seriously that it looked like it could be an emergency flare, but was scoffed at and given the 'As if...' by both the owner and my friend (who I later had a $10 bet with over it)

I was going to ask on the forum but the search function came first. Got my $10 today!
