What do you guys do about the airbag(for those that have an airbag) when you replace the steering wheel with a sports one?

I only think that would apply if the airbag was standard for the model.

Paul,,You will have to remove the Air Bag bulb from inside the dash..(Unless you know what sized resistor to run in the plug)

Paul, Just disconnect the battery , first up. I've removed my steering wheel , to repaint it with grey vinyl paint. It all went smoothly , no problems. I even published a procedure on the old pommie website. If you are reinstalling the air bag, connect the battery last. always leave the air bag facing , pad up, so that if it does pop , no one gets killed !!( extremely unlikely)

Ken, Do you still have the procedure?

My steering wheel is pretty good (its just faded on the top half - harsh Japanese sun!), so I was thinking about doing that rather than getting it recovered.

Perhaps Peter could put it in the Tutorials?

Robert, I posted Manny's tutorial on removing the steering wheel yesterday, that would cover a lot of it.

Ken, if you can find that UK tutorial, I can add it here if you don't mind.

There is a TRD replacement wheel for Soarers with Drivers airbags which retains/replaces the airbag. Don't have the URL, but a TRD search should spot it.

Yep you can get the TRD replacement wheel for Soarers from here:

http://www.takakaira.com/asp/template.asp?id=71&cat=3&prodID=GHhDeEe%60bAc%5FfBa

But just like Marshall said, is only for 96+ models only..

Gday all,
I have a 94 GTL as well as a Toyota Avalon which also has a leather wheel. The Avalon wheel is the same size as the Soarer wheel according to the tape measure, and is identical to look at, but I cant check the spline size as I dont know how to remove the soarer/ avalon airbags.I think the avalon wheel would be a cheaper option. Any thoughts?

does anyone know what the difference is between the pre-96 and +96 standard wheels? hence, why TRD wheels won't fit?

I'm sure the TRD wheels could be modded somehow to fit pre-96 cars! I'm dying for one of those TRD's!!!

Would you really sacrifice your safety over looks? Clean and clear Stupid in my opinion.

Yes you can be defected

Thats if you are getting a wheel with no airbag

Duy, the airbag was an option on '94-'96 so it's not a defection issue.

Mine came without airbags.

Ben, depending on which model.

It was an option on the GT but standard on the GT-Limited. Since the limited is basically a GT with all the options I would suggest that it is not a legal requirement.

Look here at all cars/options/specifications:

It is illegal to remove a factory airbag. Option or not.

However, having said that... Airbags are supposed to be serviced or replaced too. Strong chance the airbag wouldn't go off anyway me wonders?

Found in a search on the net that a 3ohm 1/4 watt resistor is what is used to remove light on dash when airbag is removed.. Does this sound right for the soarer? Recommended only for track days!

Can a non air bag TT be fitted with a drivers air bag steering wheel?

Will the air bag work?
