Have the exact same sound. It's sounds like the stem cover is rubbing against the dash. Because when I adjust the wheel up and down it makes noise.

I cant help but mine does it too but only in the morning when the plastics are cold.

After it warms up the squeak is gone.

LOL, wow seems pretty common. Rusty metal/bolts? Does it happen when you turn or on bumps?

Not the same, but I had a squeak develop around the head unit. Turns out that when the A/C LCD was replaced, the guy left a couple of bolts out that locate the console surround which allowed it to move a little. I replaced the bolts and the noise is gone.

Perhaps your dash unit is moving a bit if it's had the dash out for any reason?

The noise is so hard to explain, it doesn't sound like anything like the dash. It sort of sounds mechanical? It's really hard to explain, but it doesn't happen over bumps.

It seems to happen when I ease up on the accelerator.

Still happening, it sounds like an electrical/mechanical squeak. Only now, it is happening more often.

It doesn't seem to happen at one specific time, but it may have something to do with easing up on the accelerator, or putting pressure on the brake for a couple of seconds. Although I can't seem to detect a certain time when it makes the squeak, it may be a bit random.

Wish I could give more info but I can't. It doesn't sound like something is rubbing against something though.

High possibility it's the engine mounts. When was the last time you checked them. When I had my engine replaced, the mounts just vapourised when they were taking them off.

Does the transmission stick move a lot when you brake hard or accelerate hard?

Thanks Chris,

I appreciate your help, bear with me, but I have no experience with cars at all. I will check the engine mounts, but the sound is coming from the steering column.

It is getting progressively worse and I noticed something new this time:

When I'm in traffic and I press the brake, I can hear a low pitch whirring noise which lasts for about a second or two, this happens at other times (seemingly random times but there could be a reason for it). As far as I can remember my car has always made this noise, but when you are travelling at speed you can't hear it, it's not a loud noise.

So when I touch the breaks and this low pitch noise comes on, right at the end of it the high pitched squeaky noise is heard. If i tap the brake and release before the low whirring noise is through, it squeaks. If I hold the brake down until after the whirring noise there is no squeak.

In saying this, it only happens the majority of the time >90%.

But the squeak also happens at other times when the whirring happens, that isn't related to my braking.

Does this shed any new light?

Sounds like it could be the brake unit motor.

Perhaps the accumulator is stuffed and the motor is not in good shape as it is having to operate all the time.
