I finally got around to cleaning out my A/C filters this weekend, I've been putting it off for ages, mainly because I thought my air conditioning was fine. But the tutorial looked easy and I was pretty sure the filters had never been cleaned out before, plus my girlfriend was complaining that it smelt funny. So I finally pulled them out and I could not believe the amount of filth in there. The tute says it gets dirty from Japanese smog and heavy smoking but SO much dirt came out of it! The material on the filter was so clogged with dirt and dust, it was HARD!
After one decent rinse with warm water - 2 inches of black water - I couldn't see the bottom of the sink!
I used ordinary washing machine powder.
I couldn't get them white, actually in the pic they still look really dirty, I think the black that's still there is stained into the fabric. I also ignored the part in the tutorial where it says 'wash very gently'. I gave it a bit of a beating.
Especially seeing how spring/summer is getting closer, I strongly recommend this to anyone!

Both our cars were filthy and the filters like yours. In the end I replaced them with US-spec filters which are slightly different but fit in and were heaps cheaper that Jap-spec ones. The new ones were sorta pink

Tom, The box is marked "Denso 453-1003" which is obviously not a Lexus/Toyota number. I got it off a Lexus guy on EBay, who was really great. I got a new taillight as well so the postage was no more for the filters, which were a tad under USD32.
