Hi Jeff,
Thanks for the opportunity to comment on the interior recolouring topic.
Our approach at Leatherique Australasia Pty Ltd is to ensure the leather is in top condition before recolouring. This entails use of Leatherique Rejuvenator Oil (conditioner) followed a few days later by Prestine Clean (leather and vinyl cleaner). The result is soft, clean leather that will be an ideal foundation for the new colour coating.
Although not necessary, the ultimate results are obtained by stripping the old colour coating, allowing it to dry then saturating the leather with Rejuvenator Oil before recolouring. The stripping can be done with lacquer thinners (a customer reports that spraygun-cleaning thinners is easily the most effective) and one of those green nylon scouring pads (such as
ScotchBrite) available from the supermarket.
Black is the cheapest option - $50 for 250ml (enough for 2 front seats) or $70 for 500ml (enough for front and rear seats). Otherwise, we custom match at a cost of $70 for 250ml or $100 for 500ml (total).
We have found the best method of application is to use a quality nylon brush (we use RotaCota Excel 2 of 75mm width) for the first coat, followed by 2-3 mist coats applied at 60psi with a gravity feed touchup spraygun available for around $50. We use a $98 2hp GMC compressor.
We only recommend Leatherique Dye for leather and soft vinyl (not hard vinyl or ABS fittings). It is a copolymer that will not dry sufficiently hard for that purpose. There are special products available for recolouring hard plastic items.
Leatherique Dye is one of the few products that remain permeable to leather conditioner This means your seats are not sealed and will not go dry, stiff and cracked after a year or so. We see a lot of seats that have been tarted up in used car yards using a vinyl spray. Six months later they are starting to feel hard and harsh to the touch. They require stripping and recolouring if they are to be saved.
We have provided grey and light tan colours for numerous customers to treat their Lexus and Soarer vehicles.
Typical coats are $185 for enough products to do all seats in a Soarer. If there is cracking, we have a Crack Filelr product for $15 that is extremely effective on light to moderate cracking as well as disguising repairs to cigarette burns, scratches and cuts.
