okay, trying to answer everyone......

Ben - ummm my new TT (Top pic) I think I used the 250ml bottle... JUST enough !! If you arent going to be doing seats then it should be enough.
Its reasonably straight forward... Hell if I can do it, you can trust me !!!!!

Manny - Thanks Mate

Sam - Go into business.... No Bloody way !!! Its a LOT of work to get it right. Thanks for the comment !

Jeff - I used a small hobby sprayer. You can brush or sponge as well but I always found you get fine brush marks. What I found myself doing the more I went on was to give it a spray and then use a fine fan brush to spread it around while its still wet. Repeat until you get about 90% good coverage and then do another 4-5 fine coatings with the sprayer to get rid of the brush marks.
Centre console surround is a brand spanking MR T item !
However, if you look at the steering column surround that is actually sprayed with... wait for it.... Bumper Trim Paint. Self Priming and chip proof !! It actually LOOKS like the standard plastic trim although it has a very slightly rough to the touch. If I was going to do it again I might try with that first and see how it goes....

Patrick - Total cost was about $150-$200, and a lot of time !!

General comments for you guys considering doing this...
Its ALL about the preparation ! If you don't clean the surfaces well enough the dye won't bite and it will come off !

Slowly Slowly catchy monkey when applying the dye ! The dye is VERY thin, but if you slap it on too heavily it will form a skin and would probably peel. I'd say each piece I would have applied a minimum of 10 coats !

Leather !!! GOOD LUCK !!! It works EXTREMELY well on leather. BUT each seat in a soarer will take approximately 12 hours from start to finish !! Most of that is prepping the surface by removing the old lacquer.

Thats a long post, do I get upgraded from Newbie now ????
Happy to help with any questions guys !

Jeff,
check out a product called Molecubond (not sure if you can get it here). I have always been keen to give it a try on the trim, and get new leather in matching color. The report on it being used to recolor a dirtbike seat, and not wearing off - that one impressed me.

Hey Neil, how much will 1 hour cost of your labour?
I am just worried about taking aprt the front dash and not knowing how to put it all back together lol.
SO would anyone be interested in doin this with me in melbourne? It would take a fgood day but worth it I reckon.
Or I might check out some prices from modicoat I think thats their name, they were at the last sports and luxury car workshop and done excellent jobs on fixing the doors of some soarers.

Hi Jeff,

Thanks for the opportunity to comment on the interior recolouring topic.

Our approach at Leatherique Australasia Pty Ltd is to ensure the leather is in top condition before recolouring. This entails use of Leatherique Rejuvenator Oil (conditioner) followed a few days later by Prestine Clean (leather and vinyl cleaner). The result is soft, clean leather that will be an ideal foundation for the new colour coating.

Although not necessary, the ultimate results are obtained by stripping the old colour coating, allowing it to dry then saturating the leather with Rejuvenator Oil before recolouring. The stripping can be done with lacquer thinners (a customer reports that spraygun-cleaning thinners is easily the most effective) and one of those green nylon scouring pads (such as
ScotchBrite) available from the supermarket.

Black is the cheapest option - $50 for 250ml (enough for 2 front seats) or $70 for 500ml (enough for front and rear seats). Otherwise, we custom match at a cost of $70 for 250ml or $100 for 500ml (total).

We have found the best method of application is to use a quality nylon brush (we use RotaCota Excel 2 of 75mm width) for the first coat, followed by 2-3 mist coats applied at 60psi with a gravity feed touchup spraygun available for around $50. We use a $98 2hp GMC compressor.

We only recommend Leatherique Dye for leather and soft vinyl (not hard vinyl or ABS fittings). It is a copolymer that will not dry sufficiently hard for that purpose. There are special products available for recolouring hard plastic items.

Leatherique Dye is one of the few products that remain permeable to leather conditioner This means your seats are not sealed and will not go dry, stiff and cracked after a year or so. We see a lot of seats that have been tarted up in used car yards using a vinyl spray. Six months later they are starting to feel hard and harsh to the touch. They require stripping and recolouring if they are to be saved.

We have provided grey and light tan colours for numerous customers to treat their Lexus and Soarer vehicles.

Typical coats are $185 for enough products to do all seats in a Soarer. If there is cracking, we have a Crack Filelr product for $15 that is extremely effective on light to moderate cracking as well as disguising repairs to cigarette burns, scratches and cuts.

I am happy to handle questions at any time on (02) 98809911 or
leatherique@optusnet.com.au

Cheers,
John Postle

Just a thought, doesn't the colour leach out of those green scotchbrite pads when you use them?

Jeff, Leatherique in the US do a carpet dye. You can see I re-dyed the carpet in the second photo I posted up earlier.
After 6 months I did get a small wear area near where your left foot sits in the footwell.
I had a bit spare and it took about 5 mins to repair the area.... good for another 6 months ?????

With regards what leatherique have said... I'd say he hasn't dealt with Soarer seats specifically !!!! There is so much bloody lacquer on the damn things they are a nightmare to get the old lacquer off to get down to the old dye. The reason I mentioned a seat taking 12 hours is because I had to strip the old lacquer off by using lacquer thinner and 400 grade wet and dry NOT the scotchbrite pad !!!!

However, afterwards the seats are as soft as a baby arse !!!!

Give youself a prize Peter !!!

Yes the scotchbrite pads do start to break down quite quickly and they will stain. But if you're gonna dye over the top anyway....

My little cousin sprayed the interior of his 4AGZE Corrola Black & it came out pretty good. The paint is pretty good & serves its purpose. Just a bit of a tedious job though. I wouldnt mind doing it to my Soarer just gunna look into it a bit more first.

years ago i had a 82 model transam, it had gray interior and i wanted black, so i tried the vinyl colour sprays it looked great, but after a few months it was coming off everywhere there was traffic, like the door handles etc, i would never do it again, if you want to change colour you would be best paying to have it all recovered, thats what i had to end up doing.

hmmmm that leathurique sounds pretty good, would be good to get some cheap tan/spruce leather seats and spray them black, would probly be easier/cheaper then trying to find factory black leather ones!
