So in a few months I'm going to have a criminal record because I've been caught twice driving without a licence.

The first time I went to court I got off with a diversion, a $750 donation and a letter of gratitude to the informant who accepted my request for a diversion. I still have a month to pay, and when I do, the charges will be dropped.

Now I've been caught driving again with no licence, I haven't received the summons yet but the officer who pulled me over said I will be going back to court.

Just wanting to know, if anyone else has a driving conviction if it has effected you greatly?
Were you able to get loans? are you still able to travel overseas with a driving conviction? Problems with getting a job?

Sorry if they're stupid questions but my solicitor has told me to come back when I actually get the summons, and haven't had a chance to ask her these kinds of things myself.

In short, am I for the rest of my life?

Sorry for the long post, feedback is appreciated.

Shouldn't stop you travelling OS it's not a criminal conviction. Might stop loans for a while, and naturally would affect jobs involving driving. Would also affect joining the Public Service but who would be crazy enough to want to join the PS:-)?

driving jobs it may effect - depends on employer.
Insurance it WILL effect.
car loans it may have a small effect but probably not that dramatic.
going overseas it wont, they are more worried about violence and drug related offenses (and jail time).

Not to mention that you are going to have to explain it every time it comes up at job interviews, insurance quotes, passport and visa applications, "random" police roadside warrant checks etc.

Oh, and you are NEVER, EVER going to get cut any slack from a copper for speeding etc.

Just come up with a good cover story, like you were driving to stop a drunk mate from driving home. It'll take the edge off the story for all the tea sipping wowsers who are going to judge you on this one thing from here on in.

Just wondering as to why you were doing that? Surely you'd have to had known that there was a slight chance that you would get caught?

Insurance companies usually ask what has happened in the past 5 years, so in time that issue will pass. Shouldn't invisage o/s travel as much of an issue, as David said they tend to more worry about violent crimes. Don't hold much hope of getting an overseas drivers license while you're there though.

I have a mate who was pulled over, speeding and with no license. Luckily he had the drunk friend in the passenger seat, copper sent him on his way back home!

I have looked back over Ryan's posts on SC, covering his multiple crashes, speeding offences, driving with bald tyres, unlicensed driving and blame-avoidance when caught.

Makes one feel a bit like trying a cup of tea.

Just to put your mind at ease, a friend of mine was caught driving under disqualification. He went to jail for 3 months.

I have a driving conviction.. did not affect my insurance (It would have, but my circumstances allowed for them to overlook the conviction).

Have not had any other issues with it at all...

David,

I was not trying to justify anyone's driving record. Far from it. I am currently serving out a 6 month suspension for a single act of stupidity. I do not drive as I cannot accept the consequences of that decision. Ryan decided otherwise, or played the numbers game.

It is just that when you say jail to me I think "rapist", "murderer", "paedophile". A lot of society is going to think the same thing and unfortunately more than a few won't wait for the explanation before passing judgement.

It is OK Ben. I used that reference because it provided a good ironic closure to the prior point which I wished to make in any case. I was not commenting on your posts or you at all.

No, Yes, Yes, No, No. Have a nice day. :-)

Don't worry about it. In time it will all be behind you.

Oh, and stop flucking driving with no licence. Remember with no licence you also have no insurance. What if you were to hit a new AMG Benz or a ferrari or something else??

Or even a person. You would be totally fubared for life.
In the event you hit something expensive it would also ruin your economic prospects for ever.

I am going through the same at the moment i've got 3 unlicenced driving charges. But a little different to you I was meant to have a licence but the courts have stuffed up which means all my court cases are getting swapped around now and MORE of them.
It will affect your job, unless you live close to where you work.
Wont so much affect you Visa Applications or loans unless its for a car or something, cause its only a traffic criminals convition.
but i can guarentee you mate you'll end up 2 year disqualification and no less then a $1400 fine, you get less then that you are very very lucky because they are really starting to crack down on Road Convictions. Now its 3 months then 2 years straight away instead of 3 months 6 months 2 years.
I was exactly the same as you I kept driving even though I knew the computers and that were saying I was disqaulified, but I just kept thinking to myself nah they wont get me this time i'll just keep quiet. Worse come to worse they got me again and I got arrested (only because I couldn't get to a court hearing cause of work) that was 4 weeks ago and since I have not driven..STOP DRIVING!! trust me you don't wanna go to jail over a stupid little thing like this do your time, you will be surprised how fast time goes! I refuse to drive now after spending a night in the Watch House...and yes u hit that 2 years disq. and get caught again do expect to go to jail!!

Seriously dude, sell the car or let ya old's or something..take the wheels off and sell em or something just do the time u'll have them back in no time. Its not worth al the bullshit you have to go through. Mines been going on since DECEMBER last year! and now i'll either get my licence back or 6 months suspension, but because of this all I have lost my job because I had to keep ringing work to say i wouldn't be in cause I still wasn't finished at the court!

THINK ABOUT IT 6 months 2 years whatever is better then jail! you aren't going to get licence back just cause you do the jail time you'll still do up to 10 year disq.
