haha, lay off the pills buddy!
very nice progress. if i were you, i'd just leave the sh1t drive in and see how long your car takes to kill it.
i am almost convinced that a project like this is going to consume hard drives at a rate of maybe 1/year or two depending on how much and where you drive.
would be wicked on the bit of plastic between the gear lever and the stereo/ac rack
its possible we could program the thing so that it functions as a volume knob, a press is mute, and holding the knob down and rotating it skips tracks forward/backward

Its part of the skin on the interface. It use to have Celica st162, but seeing as I'm not a hairdresser and drive a soarer I modified it to say Toyota Soarer.
If anyone wants it, happy to upload it for frodoplayer carpc uses who drive soarers

Justin; have you had a chance to drive around with your CarPC running in sunlight? Is there much glare on the screen? Or is it positioned well enough to counteract that?
There are some fancy new "transflective" screens on the market at twice the price of anything else (read, like $900 aud for a 7" screen! ;) ) and all the yanks are raving aobut them.

Yeah there pretty much the same as what the cops use in Australia. I know my one is hard to read in direct sunlight, but you really shouldn't be looking at it while driving, and when you stop you just put your hand over the screen to block the sun.
There big dollars still so you have to drive a lot in direct sunlight like the cops have to to see worth out of it.

Yeah of course its hard to see in direct sunlight, looks fantastic at night. There is a spray I am going to try, but maybe down the track I will get one of those new screens
I want a faster video card at the moment!

I got a new screen on friday straight from the factory in shenzhen china. It's a non motorized touchscreen, but it can be tilted up and down and left and right, and because of this, it's a lot better to read when there is sunlight.
however I got it for their listed price but in AUS delivered. So basically saved about 120 odd bucks buying direct from the factory in china. I had to feed them a bullshit story how I was setting up a business to sell heaps of them so I could get a sample.
It also has it's own amplifer built in, but unfortunately it's only 4 speaker, and I want to run my sub It also has a built in AM/FM tuner which is a massive bonus as am/fm tuners are non existent for PC's and of the FM tuners they are hard to get working right in a vehicle.
I also tossed the zalman USB sound card as it was a heap of Terrible sound quality. I brought a new creative audigy external 24bit USB sound card. It's a USB powered unit and the sound quality is absolutely awesome. I would highly recommend if you want good sound quality in a CarPC setup.

Most of the cost in my one is the actual screen. The mobo, cpu combo is actually cheap.
I have heard of people using desktop HD's for PC's in car and saying its relieable, however of the examples i've been given the cars are riding on soft as suspension being coshie 4wd's, not sports cars riding on rough sydney roads.
The other problem with using a relatively large desktop computer is the size they take up. This is a 2 door coupe after all, not a box on wheels, space is limited. There is space in the boot, but the boot is really bumpy compared to the rest of the car, and it a long way for a vga cable to go. No matter what anyone says, 5 metres of vga cable thru a electrically noisy car is going to look like when displayed on a screen.
I have my one mounted under the passenager seat, using a standard vga length cable. Only thing that is extended is USB cables which is limited to 5 metres, and I keep it well under that.
