Hey guys,

Going away for a month overseas leaving next friday, any tips on what I should do? Im getting someone to start her once a week to keep the battery going, but anything else? should I run the tank down really low? or keep it full or? etc?

Cheers,
David.

If its only for a month, you shouldn't need to do anything special.

I go away for a month every year. All I do is put a trickle charger on the battery.

If you start the engine, it will need to run for at least 20 minutes to replace the power used to start it.

Hmm so should I get a charger? but then how will I arm my car with the bonnet open?

Peter, so it would be better to just not start it at all for a month?

It's only 4 weeks, unlikely to deteriorate much in that time. If you need the alarm on, then a charger might be a good idea, you could probably run the cords up from under the car if the bonnet won't shut with the cables in place.

Make sure it's a smart trickle charger type, and be aware that with the bonnet shut, bubbling in the acid could spit acid out the vents (which should be removed), which could then eat the bonnet lining etc.

I once had a battery on charge on the floor and put a sacrificial wet rag across the vents. When I went to remove it, it was totally mush, but at least acid hadn't spat all over the place. I had to remove it very carefully though due to the disintegration. Some sort of plastic acid proof cover might be better.

Or just leave it, get the mate to start and run it for 20 minutes after 2 weeks, then you will be back 2 weeks after that.

There was a V8 Soarer at my mechanics for months atleast 4mths and it was never started. I Was there when it 1st started again and it started fine

Neil Griffiths was there aswell, he was working on it with Niall.

So you shouldnt have any problems with it.

My car also was off the road for like 2and half mths at the mechanics and didnt get started much at all, due to turbos being rebuilt etc etc.

It had no dramas starting when starting up again.

it would depend how much battery drain there is from the alarm etc. Possibly in a workshop, the alarm might be left off.

No need to arm the car when it's inside your garage under lock and key.

If this is not the case then get someone to take it for a drive once a week for about 20 mins. That should do it. What I did before I got the trickle charger. The trrrrickle charger works better though.

Why not just remove the battery from the car and leave it on the floor? ECU shouldn't mind a reset...and I'm sure you can reprogram the stations into your stereo :-)

Yep, Just park it. Go and have your holiday.

Then come back and it will be fine.

Mine was after 2 months and a bit O/S.

Incorrect. The caps are vented and it's best to leave them in.

The only time Acid will spit out the vented caps. is if you fill the battery up with too much water. I found out the hardway ;)

Or if you leave it charging at too high a rate after it's fully charged.
