| Well I want to keep my soarers exterior tidy as possible, Ive been using a car cover but already had enough of the damn thing, they are just too much hassle and far too cheap! So I got me one of these...

Nah Peter, not too much wind at all due to the trees around.... It's quite a sturdy structure, has 150mm steel pegs in the feet that go down into dense dirt so wont be going far. Yeah Mike it actually pops apart in a minute or so into a suitcase to fit on the front passenger set - I also set it up when Im at work

Very nice! I know how you feel with car covers =S I tried to get a similar structure setup on my grassy wash area once to help keep the sun off when i take my sweet assed time washing my car; blew away overnight! ='(

Bugger, I cant see mine going anywhere Its fixed pretty hard to the ground with these chubby steel pegs that are 150mm long and have a wider head so they kinda stick in the ground hard. But hurray - no more rain/sun/crap on my car when its at home. I hate seeing it outside my house like that! Some of the other benefits of it are that I can service it no problems and it wont matter if it rains - I wont have to pack up etc!

At my old place i had a similar problem. I got my self one of those and it was CRAPO'LA! looked good at first but turned out to be utter junk! When that one blows down or falls appart (whatever comes first, and trust me it will) head down to your local bunnings or discount warehouse and look for a similar one, no tacky sides and a dark blue canvass roof. These are great. Then get six bessa-blocks and concreate the poles into the blocks. This will withstand ANY weather. Where all the poles join/ clip togeather run some white gaffa tape around the seal to stop it filling with water and to ensure it holds. If hail is a possibilty in your region, i purchased a thick silver camping tarp and tied it over the roof, this not only looked better but also added more weight to the cover. That was 3 years ago, there still standing strong in tropical qld! What you need to remember, if and when this falls your car will be belted with steel poles, not trying to rain on your parade but take it as a subtle warning from someone who has been down this path

This unit is fine Hayden, very strong and I have also taped up the joins and there is no way they will come apart with wind and rain.

Good to hear mate. The only reason i posted that is becuase i thought the exact same thing as you, i thought it was rock solid... it lasted less than a week, all it took was one big gust of wind under it and the whole thing lifted up, and i even had it sandbagged down! |

Hahaha.... I think your right seems okay now but Its just kinda hmmm un-trust worthy... All that metal over my car! eek! Plus its Too big so Ive stuck it on Trade Me. Should sell with a picture showing it built... Now to think of what to do next to look after the car! I might just invest in a quality car cover... One of the decent ones that are not harsh on the paint etc. We will see. Any recommendations for what to do?

Mate id go with my above post, like i said it has been standing at my place through dozens of huge tropical storms and one cyclone!!! The key is using the $8 a 5kg bag of postcrete, just mix it in a bucket and cement the poles into blocks... reeeeeal sturdy, i also cut the legs short by about 60cm, it brought the whole shelter closer to the ground... keeping less wind and rain out!, if you dont get hail where you are you could even consider doing it with your existing cover. Or buy one of those 'gold class' car covers there about $150 but there supposed to be great.

Can you get thicker padded type covers? So they have a bit of a springy sponge effect if something falls against the car?

The Autotechnica is a soft-lined cover and decently thick. Have a look at it. It is not a quilt but I have not seen one of them. Most of the other covers on sale are single layer. The Autotechnica was the best and most expensive I could find at typical stores (Repco, Autopro).
