Watched Daytona Nascar race on Foxtel last night and Toyota ran for the first time and came second. Not bad eh?. Driver said he had heaps of power. Anyone got any idea what engine they are running? The car was a Camry but nothing like our cardigan brigade model.

My guess- it would be from one of the larger Toyota 'trucks' for sale in the USDM. There was quite a fuss made about it a while back, so I think it would have a LOT of US domestic product on board to satisfy the good ole boys.

Yeah, its loosely based on the motors they use for the craftsman truck racing series in the US, though I believe the block is now substantially different due to different NASCAR regulations etc. Also puts out a heap of extra HP (~850hp compared to ~650 in the trucks).
Still seems wrong to see TRD spending big dollars on a carby fed push rod dinosaur, but I wouldn't say no to a shot behind the wheel

To me, motorsport becomes a bit pointless when it resorts to obsolete technology and contributes nothing to improving motoring overall. But I guess as long as there are fans, there is money.

I noticed an amusing point in a report of Daytona. Of the cars on which each of the competing cars are supposedly based, only Toyota's Camry is actually built in America. One to worry the Good Ol' Boys.
