The last few posts i made here were quite a while ago. I was looking for a SC400 soarer back then and anticipated that i would be buying one within a matter of weeks...

After a long and grueling, yet rewarding process of getting financed and car hunting I have finally purchased my first sports / lux car, a 1991 white Soarer Twin Turbo.

I can hardly stay away from it. Ive only had it for 2 days and ive already given it a thorough car wash. ive cleaned the interior twice, once with ordinary window cleaner, later with proper interior cleaner! Today i busted my arse taking each of my 18" wheels off with a rusty buggered jack so that i could degrease them.

The cars getting there, although at the moment it needs some mechanical work before it is driven anywhere. the biggest 2 concerns are the timing belt which is about 20,000kms past its service date, and the radiator which seems to have rusted. Everything is booked and these problems will be dealt with asap.

Since the car will be hitting the road soon ive been wondering if it will need any other work. It seems like a barely legal car, put it this way, at the moment its sitting on 18s with stock guards. Ill have them rolled this isnt a problem, its the exhaust thats concerning me at the moment :-(

Firstly its loud. Its got a beautiful, grunty yet sharp sound but ive been told that it may not be street legal. The motachek inspector didnt mention anything about it, although ive had cops tail me very closely the last 2 days, and have had m8s of mine warn me about it.

Its a good 2 1/2 - 3" in diameter, a lot larger than most street cars ive seen around here in adelaide.

For piece of mind im hoping someone could suggest a place i could get the sound levels tested. It has a silencer in the boot if i need it but if it is somehow street legal id like to know, so that i can freely drive it around without having to worry about pulling up next to a coppa

Ive also tried looking on google for any information which will clear up what mods are street legal down here, to no avail.

My knowledge is pretty basic at the moment, its my very first sports / lux car so id really appreciate any information which will help point me in the right direction :-)

I am as "clue-full" as you are at the moment.

The things I can tell you are;

1. The exhaust noise cannot exceed 90dB, otherwise becomes illegal. I had my supra tested a while back when I had the car and had a 3" installed, and that measured 94dB, yet i didnt seem to run into any problems

Two ways you can get a test done.

a) Some mechanics carry dB meters in the workshop. If you ask them nicely, I think they may be able to help you

b) Bring it to your closest exhaust fitter, and they definitely have dB meters, and they most of the time (99% of the time) do it free of charge I believe

c) Go to Dick Smith Electronics and purchase a dB meter for that day. Dick Smith has a 14 day money back guarantee. I don't think I need to say any more!!!

2. Make sure the car clears 100mm...cops will tail you or tend to tail you much more often if you're nearing 100mm's

3. You have a Turbo car now, so naturally you're going to want to do some mods.

If you are going to install a pod filter

a) either get a custom cover for it OR
b) Make sure your intercooler isnt visible

due to the fact that you can't have twin exposures, such as a pod filter and a cooler

4. What ever you do, DO NOT install a BOV that emits into the atmotsphere...it's a cop magnet. You currently (most likely) have a By-pass valve that comes stock on the car, unless its been replaced with something else, and that's legal because it plunges back to the air intake. If you are going to install a BOV, make sure it has a plunge back hose to connect back to the air intake, at least that way, you won't be harassed by the police "AS MUCH" and it's still good for the car

5. For your rims and tyres, the maximum you can go is 25mm larger than the largest diameter specified on the car and 15mm wider than maximum thickness specified on the car.

If you go beyond these limits, they can legally slap a canary

6. Enjoy you're car as much as you can.

P.S. The above points mentioned are for Victoria and I just saw that you are in Adelaide, so you best get the figures off your local guys.

your a champ mate

thanks for all the great tips

will definatelly be popping down to dick smiths tomorrow...

if they dont have them in stock ill just get the local workshop whos doing my timing cable to test the pich of my exhaust anyways

btw what RPM is the noise test usually carried out at?

2) Is that the riding limit nowadays for bodykits? or were you referring to the gap between my tyres + the guards

3) im enjoying it at stock... but im practically married to the car at the moment lol
ive been considering doing a few performance upgrades, is the filter worth it?

4) ahh mate your still more clue-full than i am at the moment dont worry about that haha

6) I dont think youll find me on any nissan car club forums in a loooooooooooooooooong time haha

Usually the noise test is carried out at 4000RPM...I honestly don't know why they have to rev the car so high for the test but that's the way the cookie crumbles :-)

2) 100mm is the legal ride height in Victoria, i'm not too sure in Adelaide, that's why I said to check out the figures with your local guys

3) Filter is always a good BPU (Basic Performance Upgrade). A decent filter will get you some decent power. A guy whos name I cant remember right now, has a 98 V8 Limited and he currently has a BMC carbon cold air intake...worth $650 for the kit. With that on, he told me that there was a 14kW increase at the "WHEELS"!?!?!

Now to what extent that is true I dont know...but BMC do make the best filters in the world, so I wouldn't be surprised...

What ever you do...please DO NOT buy a K & N Filter. Can't remember the website details, but I did read it on this forum that was linked to it. K&N are the worst filters in the market for letting dirt through.

Mate trust me when I say this, stick to the forums and the club, you can't go wrong.

Any problem you have, there's always some one here who has already had the problem prior to you and there's always a solution to it.

I doubt you'll have to visit the mechanics again for a long time, unless you dont have the tools

Get the radiator attended to, get the belts, bearings and water pump done with a decent flush, then refill with Toyota Long Life coolant.

Rust in the coolant is your worst enemy right now - apart from possibly any bored cops. :-)

The link should be in the "Articles of Interest" thread. I found it ages ago- having put a K&N filter on our then 4WD, a Tata, and then reading about the dirt they let through (and we drove on dirt roads a lot).

A lot of information can be had from planetsoarer.com . This site also have the full filter test. Basically stick with the Toyota std. filter and change it more often.
