Yes you have! If I can be arsed finding the email (if I even still have it) I'll show it to you. Although that was when we had no idea why my engine was chewing so much oil, leak has since been found and fixed ahahahaha, lol to the coke line cadillac! |

Ali, That's probably a bit thick, especially going into winter. The factory recommendation is 10W-30. GTX3 is a good oil.

Dan, I did the change last night and almost deep fried my fingers in the process. I drained the liquid black vegemite out and replaced it with 5.5l of GTX3. However when i put the old oil back into the 5.5l container, only about 4l went in. hrmmmm But I could'nt get the old filter off. Its done 10,000kms so hopefully it will be ok. End result, car runs much smoother

I had trouble getting my old filter off, had been done up far too tight. Took me an hour of cursing and punching holes through it with a screw driver. A very messy ordeal!

Adam, possible that some may have been consumed by the engine also?

Callum, i agree with you but I would have thought with that much oil loss a 'low oil' warning would appear.

I think the sump holds 4.5 liters, plus another 0.3 or so for the filter. I think you'll find with 5.5 in the there it will be a fair way over the full line. I'd change the filter asap. Most testing that I've seen is that the filters usually start bypassing by 4-5000K's. So after 10k I don't think it will be doing a lot. Take it to a mechanic who has the right tools, OR Bash a big screwdriver right through the filter and use that as leverage. It's messy but it works.

and next time use your hands to give the filter a firm turn to tighten it, but do not over do it!!! I can always undo my filter just with my hands when I change it.

I'd never run new oil with a old filter, especially one that had already done 10,000km's - it'll turn your new oil black almost straight away.

I just checked the oil after 1000kms of use with the old filter and the oil is still crisp clean. So it looks like it safe

But for a mere $20 for a Toyota filter, why not change it at the same time?

It's got to come off eventually though. Honestly the screwdriver method is 100% effective, don't be scared to try - as long as you lay down the newspaper you'll be right.
