As per the title, the aim of this little game is to come up with 101 things (tricks, tips, standard features, easy mods etc..) that someone may not know about their car. .

I know I've learned heaps about my car (some things after years of ownership) so perhaps we'll all find out something new!

I'll get thing started. Try to keep the list neat and not too much chatter, and make sure you mention if the feature is only relevant to a particular model (if you know).

* 101 thing you might not know about your Soarer *

1. When you are low on fuel or you have a red diagnostic message but want to see the time on the clock, you can press the Scroll button to temporarily clear the message and see the time.

2. When your windscreen wipers are on the 2nd level, (one up from intermittent) they slow down to intermittent when you pull up and stop, and then speed up again when you start moving.

3. Your car has automatic headlights, if you put the lights in to auto mode, you can actually just leave them there indefinetly. (The sensors are on the dash near the windscreen).

Hah, mine's too basic for all three of those!

Though even my old UZZ30 didn't have 2, so maybe its on the limiteds only?

Here's two more

1) If you forget to wind your window up and switch the ignition off, you can still wind up the window by opening the door first (works on the sunroof too.) Again, this seems to be something they have left off on the JZZ31, and its probably the feature I most wish I still had!

2) If you leave your headlights on they turn off when you open the door (everyone probably worked this out already) - if you want to leave them on anyway, turn the switch to the off position, and then back on again. (my car at least does this one!)

For leisurely diagnosis on your EMV-equipped car, compared with the scrolling display or counting flashes:
Turn the ignition to ACC
Wait until the air bag light goes out.
Hold down the Info and Audio buttons on the EMV while doing the following, waiting one second in each position.
- Turn ignition to ON
- Turn ignition to ACC
- Turn ignition to ON
- Turn ignition to ACC
Wait for diagnostic codes to appear and release the buttons.

Look for a scrolling wheel under the dash panel to the left of the steering wheel. If you have one, then it controls the rear air purifier which is a charcoal filter under the back shelf (you will also have vent grilles built into the rear speakers). Position 0 is off. Position 1 is auto (it senses when to come on) and positions 2 and 3 turn it on at slow and fast speeds. Very useful when some crapbox's grungy smoke has penetrated into your lovely Soarer before you managed to get the vents closed. Just scrub it away.

- Your Soarer has a vent underneath the steering wheel for the air con. Very good for when you are sweaty in between the thighs. Girls (or men) wearing short skirts will love this.

- If you come to a stop and leave your car in power mode and put the gear lever in second gear it will launch in second gear.

- The ashtray in the front has a little viewing window. I still don't know why.

Much like Luke said...

- If you have come to a stop and leave your car in power mode, you can use your left foot to step on the brake pedal and use your right to step on the gas, this help pass the time waiting for the lights to change.

There is a sensor akin to those in smoke alarms, although I do not think it is one of the radioactive variety. I recall mine coming on, once.

This is not a trick but a tip about which anyone with a UZZ31 should occasionally be reminded.

When you hand your car to a mechanic or tyre place or anyone similar, always switch off the suspension pump. The switch is on the left side in the boot. A non-expert in Soarers will not know about it so it is good to train yourself first, to avoid problems.

Mark's tip 3 reminds me that on the left of your dash is a small red dome of translucent plastic. This senses radiant energy from the sky (commonly known as sunlight) and tells the A/C to get moving or calm down to anticipate temperature changes in the car.

The tip is this: mount your rego sticker somewhere other than in the bottom left corner of the screen. If you put it down there, you will mask this sensor to a fair extent. I suggest the top left of the screen is a good place.

OK this is a good start, so much for no chatter ha ha, i've tidied things up a bit, just 88 more to go..

4. If you forget to wind your window up and switch the ignition off, you can still wind up the window by opening the door first (works on the sunroof too.) This seems to be something they have left off on the JZZ31.

5. If you leave your headlights on they turn off when you open the door - if you want to leave them on anyway, turn the switch to the off position, and then back on again.

6. For leisurely diagnosis on your EMV-equipped car, compared with the scrolling display or counting flashes:
Turn the ignition to ACC
Wait until the air bag light goes out.
Hold down the Info and Audio buttons on the EMV while doing the following, waiting one second in each position.

9. If you come to a stop and leave your car in power mode and put the gear lever in second gear it will launch in second gear.

10. The ashtray in the front has a little viewing window. - At night time, it illuminates though this window.

11. (UZZ031 only). There switch is on the left side in the boot to disable your TEMS suspension, use this whenever you take your UZZ031 to a mechanic or suspension place as non experts in Soarers will not know about it.

12. On the left of your dash is a small red dome of translucent plastic. This senses radiant energy from the sky (commonly known as sunlight) and tells the A/C to get moving or calm down to anticipate temperature changes in the car.

1. there is a speed controller device under the dash, when removed and opened you will find 2 jumpers that have jotted lines between 2 solder spots. Soldering a jumper between these 2 dotted lines will remove the 0 - 37km/h cruise controll restriction, and the 108 - 180km/h cruise control restriction (JS 300 for 108 and above, JS 301 for the under 37km/h restriction.

a Massive brake upgrade for a JZZ30 Soarer is to unbolt the Soarer brakes, and bolt on Supra TT brakes (requires wheels large enough to pass over the later callipers)(will see close on a 300% improvement in braking performance).

Rear speakers come as 4" speakers, fitted to a converter inclosure, removing this encloser enables you to bolt 6" speakers straight into the parcel tray without modification

Installing a jumper between the TS and E1 jumpers on the diagnostics port under the bonnet, and starting up the car will activate the suspension diagnostic mode, which will tighten the suspension damper up pretty good and proper (great for track days or hooning).

The standard cruise control mod has been to remove the upper limit - JS300.

Most likely yours and most other Soarers have this mod by now, but that is the first I have heard of the JS301 mod.

Having your car sold to you without foglights (i have a 97+ front bumper) is advantageous because it allows more airflow to the intake box and brakes. A disadvantage is the lack of foglights.

Peter Nitschke wrote on Thursday, May 24, 2007 - 02:40 am:

but that is the first I have heard of the JS301 mod.

I found this out when I spent a week in Brisbane with my parents, and had nothing better to do than modify the Soarer.

I did the 108km/h modification, but noticed JS301 right next to JS 300.

When testing initially after the mod, the lowest I could engage cruise was 37/38km/h, any lower and it would do nothing.

After putting the jumper in for JS301, I took it back out, expecting something would be dead, or brake and/or hoping JS301 was a stock way to remove the 180km/h speed limiter, so I went off to a friends farm to test my theory.

I still had the dreaded 180km/h limit, so I went home to work out what I had modified, and coming in through a school zone, I hit cruise at 40km/h on a big hill, the cruise had lag before activating, and came on at 34km/h, so I dropped the speed to 25km/h and it was still cruising, no quicker, no slower.

I then dropped the speed to 8km/h, and it held 8km/h perfectly.

So I realised JS301 was for the lower limit of cruise, JS300 was the upper limit of cruise.

I useless mod unless you drive really slow a lot, but I like it for school zones, considering they have just gone Nazi with fines and demerit points for school zone speeding in NSW.

...said the man trying to justify his lack of foglights. And now you can't see in the fog, so nur!

Actually that gives me another tip.

The turning lights come on when headlights are on and you indicate. However they only turn on if you click the indicator stalk into position. If you don't move it all the way so that the indicators come on but it does not click, the turning lights do not come on, this is for changing lanes apparently!

Oh I thought of something else. There is a little lock near the boot latch under the steering wheel. Locking this means you can not open the boot from in the cabin. Prevents those pesky boot openers. Or something.

We can't go fast enough here to check the upper limit:-) The 40kmhr lower limit is common with cruise- our Subaru had it, in fact it had to be reset if the speed ever dropped below 40kmhr. There must be a reason why they set a lower limit, although what it might be escapes me.

The turning lights come on when headlights are on and you indicate. However they only turn on if you click the indicator stalk into position. If you don't move it all the way so that the indicators come on but it does not click, the turning lights do not come on, this is for changing lanes apparently!

Never noticed that, i got pulled up once at random breath test and started getting grilled about use of fog lights and one was not working, it took a bit of explaining to get out of it (turn lights)

2) If you leave your headlights on they turn off when you open the door (everyone probably worked this out already) - if you want to leave them on anyway, turn the switch to the off position, and then back on again. (my car at least does this one!)

This works on mine until you use the turbo timer if you don't open the door after it times out they stay on.

Cops will play at anything to try and ping you for a bit of extra revenue....

Anyway, something else I have found.

The 2 switches under the ignotion key, one for boot, one for fuel cap are both electronically controlled, and have a button and key hole in it.

Push the button in for valey mode, and if you give the hotel driver the correct key, he can start and drive the car, but cant open the boot and steal your laptop, luggage, etc (only your key unlocks the boot release switch, and also glove box).

Also, inside the boot there is a manual release for tyhe fuel lid as well, it's right next to the fuel lid, but on the inside of the boot. If you dont see it, there is a very high chance that the inner lining of the boot was removed for some reason in the car's life, and the release wire is on the inside of the liner, but popping the linder out, and reaching in will find it.

This release is useful if you need to open the fuel cap, but dont have power going to the switches under the dash (as these are electronic as already mentioned).

Boot key hole and fuel release wire are both mechanical over-rides to the dash switch.

Brian, what you speak of is the master key :-)

Master keys can only open the boot, lock/unlock the glovebox, lock/unlock the boot release & fuel cap.

Oh I thought of something else. There is a little lock near the boot latch under the steering wheel. Locking this means you can not open the boot from in the cabin. Prevents those pesky boot openers. Or something.

If you have lost your Soarer master key, (or it was perhaps sold to you without one), and you accidentally knock the valet boot lock in, you will not be able to open your boot.

BUT!!

If you remove the interior trim surrounding the ignition key, you will be able to get to the back of the valet lock. On the rear of the barrel is a little c-clip - move this aside, and use a screwdriver to push down on the little knob thing it covers - this will push the valet lock back out /unlock it again :-)

Rob, mine does it too, as does most people's. I think there is a way around it, I read a thread about it ages ago, but was a little more complex?

same with mine...if i wait for my turbo timer to finish and my car switched off, then my lights will switch off when i open the door.
But if i just get out and walk away (which i usually do) the lights would stay on because the door has closed again.
Wish i could do somethin about it...but its probably not worth the bother lol

Yep.. you need to run a relay for it to work properly.. a good auto elec could hook it up for you in around 20 minutes :-)
