Hey guys,
Yesterday my car started to make a very scary noise. When i'm driving at low speeds (like in a car park especially), whenever I turn the steering wheel, there are sqeaking/scrubing noises like metal on rubber or rubber on rubber or even a slight metal to metal noise.
I topped up the power steering fluid, but its still doing it!! It just started all of a sudden. It sounds like its coming from my front axle somewhere. Any ideas??
I have booked it into S&L, but there is a 3 week waiting list.

I have asked a couple of people,
Without hearing it, one said it could be the fan belt for the power steering come loose.
Antoher guy heard it, and he said it could be the tie rod? or the rack & pinion or something.
PLEASE HELP MEEEE!!
I just want some advice before I take it to crooks who call themselves mechanics, and then they charge me stupid amounts of money for something simple.

Call RACV and get them to have a listen to it.
Without hearing it, I could say your cornering to hard and scrubbing tires (have you recently nudged a gutter or something??), it could be a loose/squeaky fanbelt, which is simply a tighten of the belt, it could be a powersteering pump belt, or it could be a bearing in one of the cams, or the tensioner, but this is all purely guess work without hearing the sound.

Hey,
It definately isnt the tyres. The sound comes from behind the wheels (as in, behind the brake calipers on the axle)
All I can think is....power steering pump/belt.....or suspension bushes for some reason....I'm not sure.
With the RACV I have found that half the guys have less of an idea about cars then me, and they always seem to make things sound really bad......like it could be a faulty spark plug and they'll be like "hmm....sounds like you need a new engine" lol. Bastards

Did the P/S pump take much topping up? If so, the air that may have gotten in doesn't just go away.
You need to have engine running, and slowly turn wheel lock to lock a few times and with luck, the air will collect in the reservoir and the noise will go away.
A good listening session under the bonnet should help you locate the noise better, also does it only happen while the car is moving?
A little bit of self diagnostics will help us to help you!

Hey,
I got my uncle (he is a mechanic) to just have a quick listen. The sound is coming from just behind my front passenger side brake disc.
He is thinking it could be something like the tie rod, or anything else around that area that could have worn out or dried up. A uni-joint of some sought.
Does this sound about right?? Could it still be caused by air in the system??

Seems my car does exactly the same, turning the steering when standing or at low speeds such as in car park is the worst. Been doing that for 2 weeks now. Seems its getting better now actually, hahahahaha. I somehow dont think its a major issue- but thats just my gut feeling. Sounds like worn rubber somewhere or rubber that needs grease. Dont count on me though.

I just had a recon power steering box put in and when you turn the steering wheel it sounds like rubber is rubbing on rubber. At first i thought the wheel was rubbing on the guard. That only happens when the car is moving. We know its not the steering as that is ALL brand new out in by pedders. So we are thinking its the power steering box, maybe the bearings in it. The car is going back to where we had it done to be checked, but yours sounds like what is happening to ours.
Cheers Liz

He runs a million dollar business....working 12 hour days 6 days a week.....I wish he had time to fix it lol.
Plus nowadays he doesnt do any mechanical work, its all business....but he was a mechanic for like 20 years.
Its at a brakes/suspension place today, hopefully they will find the problem and not be dodgy bastards and charge me a fair price. If they are decent, I will post their details up.
Thanks for the help though guys....Its so good to know that there is always help available in this club.

I have a rubber on rubber scraping noise when i turn my wheels as well =P
From taking my front right head light off so many times the mud guard inside the tyre well has 'popped' out. Couple with a slightly larger diameter wheel than stock and it means i get hot rubbage when turning corners on my front right wheel.
Sounds awesome. =D
Don Bagnall Moderator New Zealand I have WAY less Soarers than Hayden :-(
I got it checked out today, and it tunrs out the ball joint on my passenger side lower control arm has had enough, and the drivers side isnt far behind.
Went to toyota for prices.........F#CK SH#T BASTARDS!!! lol. These things usually cost like 100 or less for more common cars.....for the soarer....JUST under $1000 EACH!!!! THATS 2 GRAND FOR THE PAIR!!
I called a few wreckers and I can get them for about $250 each, so it looks like i'm going second hand. Any other opinions on what I should do?? No way I can afford 2 grand.
