I bought a 91 V8 limited a few months back at what i thought was a good price (just under 10k), all the others i was looking at were above 10k, some as high as 14K. Now i see some people selling them for as low as 7k .

Why is there such variance in what people are asking for them??? I understand that different models have different options but even ones that have the same options have very different prices. I can understand price diffrence based on condition but 1000's of dollars difference??

I bought my one cos i think they are great cars and the one i particularly got had most of the options and was in great condition, but now I realise that street cars are not for me. Im now feeling a little scared im going to have to sell it for considerably less than what i paid even though i have fixed up a few things on it and put another 12 months rego on it.

What is a 91 V8 in great condition really worth?

As you said yourself Ben it all depends on the condition, options, year of the car.

An early model with average paint, cracks/stains in the interior and that hasn't had many mechanical items attended too might go for 7-9k. Whereas another early model may have a very neat body, all major maintenance items attended to and extras like repaired EMV, sunroof etc which may go for 9-12k.

Later 1994+ models tend to go for a couple k more too.

Personally i would bay a couple of $1000 extra for one thats been well looked after, as it always saves you in the long run.

If your cars a good example i cant see why wouldn't get your 9-10k asking price.

Fair enough, it just seems like there is more variance than other cars. Ill just have to be patient i guess.

Well, I sold my TT pov pack for 7K couple of weeks ago. Bought it for 13800 two years earlier. The previous owner bought it for $19,990 from a dealer 2 years before me (I found the sale papers on the glove box haha). When I sold it, it was in excellent condition, and unlike other cars out there, the interior was spotless, like brand new! And paint was in quite a good condition also. The buyer of my car got himself a good car for a good price.

What people need to understand is that all cars depreciate. You can't expect that car to be worth the same as what it was many years earlier. I still see some dreamers out there that try to sell their for just under 20K. I wish them all the best, good luck! But to be honest, those were the prices 4 years ago. I'm talking about the average soarers here, not the unique ones such as factory manual ones, or actives etc...

My car I could have sold for 9K or less, but it would have perhaps taken me much longer. I just wanted to clear my garage so I sold it for less, the 2K that I missed out on doesn't bother me, that's less than 2 weeks of my take home pay, I dun give a toss.

Another reason why I sold mine for so low I suppose is that I've seen over the last few months, people trying to sell their pov pack soarers (here in WA) as well as other spec ones for the 12K mark or thereabouts, for the last six months at least, if not more. Now seriously, those were the prices two years ago not now! I wasn't exactly looking forward to selling a car for half a year, that is ridiculous! Market value is what people are prepared to pay for them right NOW. Someone turned up at my house, offered 7K, fair enough, if that's what you reckon it is worth, it's yours. Easy done, I didn't need to pay rego for the next 6 months, or insurance, or whatever. It's gone!

The reason why soarers are such good value for money cars is that they are just not worth much in the market nowadays. They appeal to a small select group of people (us) and a normal Joe Blow won't appreciate this car, not until he owns it anyway.

Also, you can get a fresh import from Japan, delivered, complianced and so on for about the 9K mark anyway. Why would you buy a local car for a higher price, that has been used here for many years, as opposed to a fresh import soarer that has been sitting in storage in Japan for last few years as well?

Yes, it is a pity they lost their value over the years, but it is a fact people. Soarers are not classic cars (despite what me may feel towards them) that would keep their value. They are great cars, but they're anot an investment, and you WILL lose money, on very much any car you buy

P.S. I've also spent about 7K on mods during my soarer ownership, for which I only recovered about 2K by selling some separately :-(

Yeah. Ive seen them selling for as low as $6K now.

I picked up mine for about $8k5 about 2 years ago, bargin!

But alas, I didnt realise how much parts were. So in the end I would have been better off with a more expencive car that had already had the work done. No biggie.

Its my car now and I love her.

If anyone can find me a cheap LSD I might end up getting rid of the 1JZ Vn commodore and put eh Soarer on the track! It sure is a better candidate with the availability of performance kits around.

I think what's effected the market is that all the losers out there pick up the lemons for 9K or so then realise it needs multiple parts fixed (which can cost big bucks as we all know)

Some of them obviously can't be bothered fixing the problems due to it being a daily or something, so they just end up re-selling them at low prices, bringing all of us down with them.

eg. Ex Soarer owner spreads the word "Yeah I had a Soarer once.. was a piece of crap. Had to fix lots of stuff, etc. etc."

Knobs.

I bought mine for $18,400 almost three years ago now. It had 9,000kms on the odometer. Scoff if you will but it is now at over 60,000kms and all I have had to replace is the heater valve and the clip in the door. I think I did the write thing /brag.

Looked at many 9 - 16k soarers and some of the cheaper ones were pos. Mine was imported for 23.5k 3 yrs ago (1994 blek), paid a little bit under that from the previous owner and havent had a serious problem since. Thats good value compared to my friend that sells and buys a skyline every 6 months due to problems. That being said, still spending trying to restore to original state.

I swapped my old 180sx + $2000 cash for a Soarer TT.

Admittidly, the 180sx was about $4000 worth of thrashed, destroyed POS, which means my Soarer was worth about $6,000 cost to me.

The day I got it home, I found a pool of p/s fluid pissing from the car, cost was $200 to get fixed, then I had a battery die, cost was $350, because I also had the aftermarket and dodgey wired alarm removed, and that was pretty much it.

everything else has been my fault, so I cant blame the car for that.

dont be worried about soarers dropping so much in price.
I too have seen them for around the 6k mark but there ruff as, they need alot of $ just getting them back to good clean condition..

And as vinh said its stuffing us all up with good clean cars..

If people know soarers and want to buy a clean one their just gonna have to spend more money, and its up to US to put realistic prices on our cars not just flog em off for near nothing..

If I had to sell my car i would not sell it for under 13k despite of how many cheap sh!t boxes are on the market for a lot less...

well i am asking less than what i paid, but i have fixed some minor probs it had (rear brake light not working, busted door handle) and put another 12 months rego on it. I dont really expect too much depreciation over 6 months on a 16 year old vehicle.

But yeah it is not exactly a car in demand, so i am just going to have to wait unfortunately

so does anyone want to buy my V8?

They are old cars now - old cars just aren't worth big money. But who cares, just enjoy them.

I totally agree!! Having owned a tt soarer 7 years ago (91 model), i absolutely loved the car. Am in the market again but am a very disheartened buyer thinking of steering well clear after what i have seen for the price. e.g ripples in the panels, cosmetics not functioning, tears in the seats, filthy interiors, bad paint etc. This is on 95,96 models advertised at around 15k plus, and said to be in immac condition!! So i think the price is right for a below avg cond car with over 100k on the clock, over 10 years old, no service history and run down cosmetics!! I would'nt pay over 10k!! Dont get me wrong a well presented soarer is worth every cent but they are few and far between, and alot of the time this is how they are delivered. If someone can shed some light on the situation and point me in the right direction to a well presented soarer for sale in perth i would love to hear it!!

Thanks!

OK, an active was sold for only $5000 just not long ago ok. so i guess it's really up to the buyers how much willing to pay for the car.
