I had been meaning to replace my factory panel filter with an Apexi Power intake filter for some time. It seems to be one of the best flowing air filters around and also the best filtering.
Heres some pictures of the installation. Sounds nicer than before and there seems to be a gain in power, especially in the mid range.
Only thing left to do is a top cover to keep the heat out.
...and heres my new Number plate I got for the soarer recently.

Basically this is what I did.
5mm thick MDF board.
Traced the factory filter for the shape.
Cut a 3" Centered hole for the Filter intake, drilled the holes for the mounting screws for the filter.
Primed the MDF board and sanded it, Painted it with Satin Black spray
Put strips of foam sealer around the back of the MDF to give a good seal.
Drilled holes for the 4x L metal brackets I used, 8 bolts to hold it them in place tight. (4 holes in the MDF and 4 holes in the Air box (Post BFI)
Put the MDF painted piece in through the top, Screwed the Air filter on the board tilting it forward with a 10mm Rachet. And then Attaching the 4 L brackets and bolts.
Fitted it back into the car.
Quite happy with the results. If pics are needed ill take some when I re fit it into my TT soarer Air box when the 1JZ motor goes in in the next month or so.

Yeah, I got the filter and was like oh Sh1t how the hell will I fit this in the air box as the back is to far in and on an angle. I was originally planning to fit it in the air box but never thought about how till I got it...
But then I just instantly clicked and thought to use some MDF sheeting I had and heres the result!

Very nice, i have been meaning to do something like this for a long time.
Do you still have the original baffle panel behind the MDF board at all, or have you totally ripped that out and just used the MDF board to create a seal?
I have already ripped out my baffle panel and am wandering how i can do something similar...

Behind the airfilter is a wall with a small hole in before it reaches the rear chamber. It sort of acts like a baffle to reduce intake noise. When i made the BFI with the stock air filter i removed this wall so the air behind the filter was unrestricted.
Maybe the N/A boxes dont have this? The shape and the angle of the pipe connecting the back of the box to standard air intake piping of a 1JZ is also different on the N/A box going by the pics.

Yeah I think your right. My V8 nor I6 soarer had anything behind in the airbox.
Could well be a TT extra to keep the turbo noise down in factory spec...

WOuld it breathe better with a Panel filter? INstead of it breathing through an open faced 200x200( not sure of size) Bfi, youve restricted that back down to 80mm or 100mm opening?
So it the airbox still has the factory resonance chamber, the the 75mm opening, with a Small big chamber and then the opening for the pod filer?
A nice idea, but me thinks it would possibly make more power/torque with a larger Panel filter using the BF hole in the front. Back to Back dyno runs would be interesting

Yeah Thats a good point.
It feels faster but that could be my imagination. Air intakes can be a bit touch and go....
I actually recently bumped into a guy with a Supra that has a Shop local featuring a Dyno so I may try crack a deal with the guy and try this Apexi filter with a factory one see what the differences are. Probably be easiest to find a factory airbox and swap them over. Would be a bit of fiddling removing the MFD out...
Good point you brought up Daniel. My guess is the Apexi would be a couple of KW ahead. It seems quicker so Ill see. Try get it done in the next couple of weeks. If not after Ive done the TT engine swap.

Its been done Mike, on PlanetSoarer. Ive posted link to the relevent page Im waiting on an ARC powerbox at the mo, dont really care if I lose or gain power cos it looks so damn cool!!
