Hey Guys,

For a spot of uniqueness and originality Ive decided to supercharge my 2JZGE 3.0L Soarer using an Eaton M90 on a custom manifold.

The project is well on its way. Recently acquired a reconditioned Eaton M90 supercharger. What an awesome unit! Ill get some pictures up later in the week. I believe its a series II type.

I'm having a custom mount/manifold custom and series of brackets fabricated out of stainless steel where it will attach to the intake runners and allow the s/c to mount flat on top. Ive designed & measured it up according to allow for a good fit in the right place. It will hopefully be made up next week depending on how busy my mate is at the engineering shop. Later when the time comes next stage will be some custom adapters and brackets for the intake system to link up nicely.

Cooling I'm using a top mounted Factory Supra Intercooler, the Throttle body set up has been relocated to the drivers side of the engine inline with the motor with some qwerky piping to the intercooler! All fairly simple.

To allow for clearance for the supercharger and its nose cone as well as the intercooler & to allow for good cooling, the bonnet is going to be raised around 60-100mm with a reversed scoop following the bonnet styling lines, Ive done some conceptual sketches and by my design it should look the part with out looking obscene in anyway. It will have tapered sides and a smooth rise starting at the front, hard to picture unless you see it but in time it will be revealed.

This will be made by using two spare bonnets I sourced a number of weeks ago, metal framing under side of it and fiberglass to gain smooth lines in the raise etc. Probably going to be painted a nice Semi gloss/Satin Black at this stage. Within the scoop it will feature a electric fan to suck in air for the intercooler from the rear of the bonnet where the intake is, controlled by a factory style switch inside of the car.

Performance wise, For a start Ill run it around 5-6PSI, sort out any issues, see how it performs at this level which I'm sure will be quite decent considering the capacity of the charger!

Next to be sorted at this level with be the exhaust, a nice extractor, even factory VVTi type headers if I can find them will do, dropped into a single 3" with a 19" 3" Coby resonator, to a Y split of 2.25" leading to dual Mercury 2.25" Double offset mufflers plus some decent stainless steel angle cut oval tips. If needed Ill add two 9" 2.25" resonators between the Y split and mufflers.

Following that look into a Uni-Chip which Ive found are compatible for the 2JZGE motors to get the tune right, Obviously sort out upgrading the fuel system if required, larger fuel pump of course before the first test start of the motor.

TT brakes will be needed of course plus few other bits and pieces. Need to sort out pulley sizes, belt type and the location of the custom tensioner, It will be run of a secondary pulley fabricated on to the Power steering pump pulley.

So yeah should be a interesting project as it all comes together. Ill keep it updated with pictures and whats going on. My realistic aim is to have it all finished by End of May at the latest. Hopefully to have it running at 5PSI towards the end of April.

Cheers Guys!

Mike, best of luck with your project and for doing up a JZZ-31. I looked so hard into doing my JZZ31 up but just resorted to buying a vvti JZZ30 in the end. Will be interesting to see how this goes

Yeah that was the one.

Cheers for the comments guys.

Cant wait too see it up and running, just gotta get it done bit by bit. :-)

Looking much forward to the new s/c whine and power/torque increase. Should be very, very interesting to see how the 2JZ goes in this path rather than turbos.

Will be interesting to compare against a TT when its sorted, probably not as much up top but we will have to see!

So it's going to be a 2JZ UZZ30 with JZZ31 internals from a turbo'd 1UZ car with a blower on the stock camry motor...?

I have seen about 15 different threads regarding your plans for the car? Is this final?

Good luck with it all, I'm sure you've already done it but be sure to read as much as you can at
www.supraforums.com.au , I've seen some 2JZ-GE SC information pop up on there from time to time.

Cheers.

Sounds interesting indeed ! But why a TOP mount cooler? If you are doing all custom stuff anyways you may as well go a front mount as they are more efficient and then you dont have to worry about fans, switches etc etc

These projects are always good though and full of lessons for all, best of luck with it mate and keep us posted!

Heres the M90 Supercharger I purchased.

Just did a good tidy up of the unit today and painted it with High Heat Ceramic Paint.

Looks brilliant...

It's going to be very interesting to see how much power and torque is actually made with this set up...

Along with the supercharger Ill be running basically:

-An Apexi Intake BFI
-Factory Supra/Soarer Intercooler
-Dual Exhaust with high flow header no casts
-Either an Apexi SAFC or Uni-Chip fuel/air tune

So with just those (Not including S/C) Id expect about a 20% total gain in power, similar but slightly lower increase in torque, maybe around 15%?

That would make it around 270HP/325nm which I think would be fairly accurate for a worked 2JZGE

When the supercharger comes along, for a start at 5 PSI theoretically it should have a 30% gain at least making it 360HP... Sounds alot I wonder if this is will be the case? And at my goal of a solid 8PSI It should be 420HP? Im sure it would be a bit less than that realistically but on paper it works out to be that so you never know!

Im sure it will be well over 350HP/400nm though at around the 5-6psi mark Giving it around 250HP at the rear wheels if the drive terrain power loss is 30%. That would be 186rwkw...

If its nearer to the 400hp mark at 8PSI then it could well be 210rwkw which would be brilliant. Still won't know till its tested in May! Will be very interesting to see how it competes with M90 1UZFE soarers and their 'F' narrow angle heads against the 2JZ's Performance wide-angle DOHC 'G' head.... Just a thought that the 2JZ could make better use of the s/c large air flow than the 1UZ's heads do...

I dont think the M90 will make that much power on a 3L motor... Just have a look at how much power it makes on 4L of V8 with similar mods.. Then scale it down from there.

We see 6psi - 8psi blower kits on V8's only just making 260-290rwhp and thats on the 4L v8.

And 30% drivetrain loss, I doubt that.. maybe 18-25% tops.. Cause i would guess a 400hp motor should be making about 320-330rwhp with an auto.

Hmmm good points Daniel. Id expect it to be around 10-20rwkw less than a V8 looking at their factory performance

Most 3.0L's Can get out around 110-120rwkw factory and the v8s 130-140rwkw ish.

So It should be a bit less power wise than a V8 with a similar set up. Torques another issue though.

Oh like many of my hair brain project ideas I just sold it for a V8 all those years ago. A supercharger on a 2JZ would have been pointless compared to what is achievable with a good turbo setup.

Since then I got bored with Soarers but not with the 1UZFE so I fitted one into my BMW 3 series coupe.

It's one of the best things I've done. There were a few times where it didn't look like it was going to get off the ground but I pushed on hard and got it done, just doing the final touches as we speak, but I've had it running since October.

Yeah Evan anytime,

Just send me a PM.

Sill need to get it certified, have yet to sort the true dual exhaust system (to replace the stock 325i setup), along with a few other small things but it's pretty close to being on the road.

best of luck with the project mike!

i have used these eaton m90 superchargers on two cars. first was a vr commodore custom plenum and curtom 5L twin throttle body 'tank' that bolts to the rear intake. looked and sounded the bizz :-)

second was my first car, VL commodore RB30 turbo block. chopped and welded stock plenum, bob.. crogdale?? i think the name was, turned me a custom crank pulley, and bolted it up. ended up having 20 psi, so used a wastegate to relieve the excess pressure., great fun although extremely illegal as i was only 17 at the time. lol.

couple of things, make sure you use NEW eaton specific oil in the supercharger and avoid overheating at all costs as the teflon coated screws in the charger are prone to delamination.. not cool at all.
