Hello guys and girls

Well as the topic states above MV Automatics it one of the worst places u can take your soarer for a gasket/any gear box serves!!

I recently got my stage 1 shift kit installed by MV’s my initial thoughts where they did a good job until the next morning where I notest a rather large oil stain directly below the gear box pan/sump. I checked my oil level on the dip stick and notist it was low so I got my mechanic to drop by my place and after tightening up the pan bolts told me that “there is more than likely a split in the gasket so ring MV’s back up and get them to replace it”. ok I rang MV’s and they cood only fit me in 1 week later during which time my car proceeded to leak oil (I had to buy more oil so I cood get to work). On the day of arriving back at MV’s my car was looked over and they told me that the gasket bolts needed tightening after they did so they told me “all shod me well with the car”. Ok I get home all is well till once agene the next morning there in a new oil stain so I ring MV’s and agene cood only get me in 1 week later so off to MV’s once more (now that’s 2 days I have had to miss work 3 if you include the day of the shift kit). So I get there and they tell me they will replace the gasket and seal it with some type of silicon which will take 3 hours. So of I went wondering the nearby streets for 3 hour I get back and all looks to be ok. I get home it’s all ok but as you may have guest in the morning once agene a fresh oil stain so I ring my mechanic he gets to my place and tells me they didn’t silicon it all the way only the top half (and when I was at MV’s I showed the leak was coming from the bottom half) so now I have to ring them back agene to get them to fix it once more but this time I’m going on the day I call them!!! And I’m going to watch them doing it!!

Now I here u say it’s only a gasket and its only a oil leak big f**king deal well no it is a big deal I live an hour and a half away, I’m now going to have to miss a 4th day out of work, im driving there every time in peak hour traffic and using a sh*t load of fuel. What type of gear box work shop can’t get gear box gasket right the first time!!
Rant over..

I'd be pissed too - sealing the pan is not a hard job, if they can't get that right, what else have they f*cked up?

Hmmm an example of poor workmanship, as Matt just said, Its not really a hard job...

Hope they have not made any other errors particularly in the gearbox its self...

I feel for you dude, I had the same problem with my car which I done a fresh oil change and shift kit fitted. It actually is harder than people think, because when the previous twat had done a gearbox service on my car, he over tightened the bolts and warped the crap out of the pan. It took my mechanic 3 times and a crap load of gasket goo to finally stop it from leaking. And no way I was going to use a cork gasket, may have fixed the issue in the short term, but there is no point really. I don't know if you can order new pans from Toyota, would be a great idea though......

They do tend to crumble eventually, and can be difficult to clean off when they do.

i dont trust anyone. noone will treat your car the way you do. I try to do everything myself. so far so good.

If someone absolutley HAS to do some work on it. then I make sure I do as much as I can before they get it.

You may have had a bad run with him but there are people around that swear by his work. I have a stage 2 box from him. My car was off the road for a while(bout a month), but i have never had a problem with his box since it went in. 18 months or so. And it was Neil Griffiths that put me onto him. I don't doubt that you have been screwed around and lost cash, and some time of work, but there there might be something else behind your leak besides a dodgy mechanic.

This!

I too have shift kit from MV and it shipped with all the bits (gasket and valve body basically). The magic man Joe Hollywood in Perth stuck it in for me and away i went. It has not skipped a beat!

It's unfortunate that you have had a bad experience with them, however i would like to think that you were dealing with someone else from their garage who does live up to the otherwise good feedback which people have to say.

The only reason it took me so long to get my car on the road was the fact that the first box he sent me had a seal blow out as soon as we started the car. He then paid the freight to get it and my stuffed box back to him and ship me another box (And I am in central Qld, so the freight would not have been cheap). So I can't praise him enough for his work. I was just unlucky but it happens.

sounds very unusual for MV

i swear by their workmanship and service. i have onlyheard of one person having a drama that i referred to them and mike fixed the issue and paid for the problem to be sorted instead of freighting the box back to s.a.

i understand that you should not have had a problem, i also understand not all people are mechanically minded.

but to fix this problem is as simple as draining the oil into a clean container so you can reuse it. undo the 30 or so 10 mm bolts on the pan. pull the pan of, clean the surface with a razor blade. get a new cork gasket, $20, run a film of grease or oil on the cork so it can slide around until tighted, put the pan back up and put in your corner bolts, and then put the others in one by one.

it would have saved you 3 trips and three days of work, this whole process shouldnt take more than an hour.

i hope you have better experiences in the future

If it is so easy to do, why couldn't it be done right the first or even the second time?

People shouldn't have to fix stuff that they have paid a professional to do.

I suspect the problem may be apprentices.

I had my gearbox serviced there a couple of years ago, and the apprentice overfilled the gearbox, probably without the engine running.

After the drive to Queanbeyan and back for the Easter bash, the rear and underside of the car was coated with ATF from it blowing out the breather. All over my nice new rear bushes and tyres too, and ATF affects rubber.

When I took it back to MV, they still drained over a litre of excess out.

I probably could have drained it myself, but that's not the point. Workshops need to know when things aren't done right, so they can check the work and possibly learn something that will make a better job next time.

Ashley also had a problem with leaking after getting a shift kit fitted, though in that case it was eventually blamed on a leaky speedo sensor, though it wasn't leaking previously.

That would be highly frustrating I would Imagine, especially when caused by someone that you paid!

I'm having to take note of this fact before I replace my Steering Rack Bushes as when I was installing my trans cooler I realized ATF fluid from the leaking power Steering pump and dripping right on to the worn out bushes so it would be a mistake to put the new bushes in there and let them get damaged by the ATF

I must get that damn pump and valve sorted out really soon before I put the bushes in.........
