Hey chaps
Got a puzzle that id like clarified. (JZZ30 GT-TL)
scenario.
I open the drives door with my key which opens the passenger door aswell. I get in and so does the passenger. within 1 minute of driving the car locks both doors. We stop and try to get out.
the drivers door unlocks when I pull the open door latch and the door opens. but the passenger door does not do the same. they have to manually lift the lock mechanism then pull the latch to open the door.

As Peter has mentioned, it's not the handle that locks/unlocks, it's an electronic controlled locking switch controlled by the door control ECU.
Reason it's not a mechanically unlock feature is because it would be too easy to then use a wire and hook through a bent window/window frame to latch and pull the handle on the otherside door and mechanically unlock the door from the inside handle.
Issue is the door control ECU needs to control the doors individually, I tried rigging my passenger door to unlock first mechanically, then got pointed to the security flaw, so went for the electronic approach.
My plan: To get the entire door control system from a left hand drive, which had all the solenoids, controllers, sensors, etc already in it. Set up a timer relay that would allow the door system to have a timed 30 seconds of power once everything was turned off (same as the door ECU does), and have an electronic sensor in the handle, so as the handle moves back, it activates the signal to electronically unlock the door.
Unfortunately, I never got a chance to investigate this work, as my car gave up and is now sold and gone.
What I did in the meantime was get a sticker made up "WARNING, DOOR AUTO-LOCKS, PLEASE UNLOCK BEFORE ATTEMPTING TO OPEN" and once this was put on, people actually stopped before pulling on the door like donkeys.

My regular passengers know the drill (And the consequences for forgetting ) but when I've got someone new in the car, it's not hard to just tap the unlock button on the drivers door.

It's annoying re the passenger side however, especially when people start ripping at the door handle to open it unless I unlock it before hand.
god that me
sometimes i forget to quickly unlock the door, and some passengers have tried so hard pulling the handle that the door wont unlock from the inside at all. the little flip lock thing will get stuck in the locked position, and i will have to get out of the car and unlock the door with the god damn key!

im glad im not the only one feeling stupid about this problem. ill look into it some more. As the electronics are already in place to rig something up. im sure it can be done.

My car alarm solves this problem. Once the engine is running, I hit the alarm button. It doesn't arm it but just locks the doors. When I open my drivers door, the passenger side unlocks as well.
