I've been getting into OBD protocols of late, as I have a scanguage which won't work on either of my present cars. This is real headache stuff: for instance, my Scangauge II worked on JDM Isuzu (manufactured in USA though) but not on Soarer, yet from resources I've looked at they are supposed to have had the same OBDII protocol, namely J1850-10.4. They did however have different pins populated on the OBDII port, and I can't remember what the Isuzu's were.
The Soarer has 1,5,10,13 and 16 populated , which is ohhh so close (but no cigar) to PWM (if the 1 were a 2). Is it possible to transfer the sigal from position 1 to position 2? (it's a data line). Of course this still might not work with the SCII or indeed any other scanner.
Does anyone out there know the actual protocol used in our Soarers? It might well be that Toyota changed the pinouts on Soarers slightly (i.e data line from 2 to position 1) to suit JDM scanners, because SC300/400 work with ScanGuageII (all post-1996 cars imported to US had to conform to one of the three main protocols (Toyota/Lexus swapped from aforementioned J1850-10.4 to ISO 9141 in MY 1999).
Our Rexton is really weird, as it has all pin positions populated except 7, 14,15 & 16. Weird, because all protocols are supposed to have pin 16 populated as this has power to work the scanner! Presumably the maker of the Ssangyong ECU (Delphi) use another pin for power for one of their own scanners.
I'll continue looking at this situation as I hate having gizmos which won't work (at the time I bought SCII it was $240!!!) and miss the information provided (which took the place of gauges worth hundreds $$$). At the moment I'm looking at getting an ELM327 OBD scanner setup which works through a PDA, they're quite cheap out of HK/China. The main issue is that many PDAs don't work due to lack of the required serial capability, so now I have to branch out into PDA research! The best PDA is apparently the Palm, but the early ones are monochrome only and the later ones USB only (with no serial capability). This all enough to make the head spin, especially for someone like me with minimal interest and ability in things electronic!
This may not be of a lot of interest to many forumites because pre-1996 cars (like our first Soarer) were OBDI which is old hat, and of course most Soarers were built prior to this model year.

I should mention that it's possible to use a newish PDA because there are dongles available to get signal from OBDII port to PDA wireless via Bluetooth etc. This adds to the cost though.

There were a few people from the mp3car forum at one stage looking at this sort of stuff however im not sure how far they got, it may have been abandoned.
