I have received a very strange enquiry through carsales.com.au...

Name: fg
Town/Suburb: Near DARLING HARBOUR
Postcode: 2000
Email: **@aol.com
Comments:
Hi,
I have tried to call you but no answer.
I want to buy your car and please contact me only at: ************@yahoo.com with a mobile number where i can call you.
Thank you, and i will wait your email at: ************@yahoo.com so i can come and pick up your car .

P.S please don`t forget to contact me only at: ************@yahoo.com

2 things - I don't have any missed calls on my mobile and why does he have 2 email addresses on the enquiry and why does he want to come pick up my car without even looking at it first??? I have a very very very strange feeling...

What do you all reckon? Anyone else received dodgy emails like this when selling their cars?

There are a few car buying scams happening, so be wary. He will probably offer to pay for it, may even do so, but there are loopholes that mean you later get the money charged back against your account.

This explains it.

---

Emails in bad English offering to buy your item and paying by certified check, cashiers cheque, building society or Bankers draft for an amount greater than you are asking, then to send the balance on to their shipping agent once the cheque has cleared, usually by Western Union. This is a scam using stolen/forged bank drafts/cheques which can clear in 3 days and bounce a month later. By then you have paid the scammer the surplus cash and your bank pulls the total amount back. DO NOT REPLY. The authorities are away of this fraud but appear to be doing nothing about it.

I had some emails like this ages ago trying while to sell my Honda. They were very odd like this and it appeared to be someone from another country.

I just blocked and reported the email, didn't hear from them again!

And payment must be in cash only.
But yeah, have a couple of friends with you, and meet somewhere other than where you live.

Its a scam.
I had an email exactly like that when i was selling my first car. Usually it is from someone over east saying they will use a transport company. They pay for the par and your bank account will show the money has been put into your account. So you ship the car...
When you try to take out the money it doesnt come out.

This also happened again a month ago when i was selling a deck. A lady contacted me saying she is from US wanting to but it for a son in Nigeria. Seemed legit. I contacted Australia Post to ask about shipping costs, so i could give the lady a price. They told me there are massive scams coming out of Nigeria.
Same deal.. the money shows in your account, so you post the item. But then the money bounces back.
Dont do it... its not worth it.

100% a scam.

Don’t give him your number just email him back and organise a date to meet him where he can hand over CASH (which obviously he wont want to do), alternatively email him back requesting his number and say you will contact him. Do not give out your number.

“P.S please don`t forget to contact me only at: ************@yahoo.com “

What other contact details did he give you?

Funny though, as soon as I read it the first time I immediately felt sad I had to sell the Soarer. Can hold onto it a bit longer now haha

1 - Act naive and play along with the scammer.
2 - Tell him to meet you somewhere to finalise the deal.

All of the people who, one way or another, are suggesting meeting up with the scammer are blathering.

The point of the scam is that he will never meet you and will not under any circumstances pay cash. If he did, there would be no scam to play.

Lol I love these scams. I get them all the time in my work email, atleast once a week. I always get a giggle out of them. Here are a couple I have saved :

Hi,
How are you doing today? My name is James, I live in London and work in a financial institution here in United Kingdom. There is a potential transaction relating to a dormant account of one of our deceased customers, which I would like us to handle the fund actualization together. Secondly, I hope to relocate and acquire a home for my family with a view to establishing over there. I will be needing your assistance and co-operation in this endeavor. Let me know if I can trust you with the above and more information will be sent to you as quickly as possible. For further details, please contact me through my private email-

Respectfully,
James

AND

Compliment of the day to you!

I am Fredrick the branch Manager of a commercial Bank here in United Kingdom. In the process of auditing our bank accounts this quarter, I discovered that there is a dormant account with the sum of Three Million British Pounds trapped in it. After thorough verifications and investigations, I discovered that the account owner is a foreigner and that he is dead.

This money can be paid to the relatives of our late customer only through our head office; I have contacted you to present you as the next of kin to the deceased before our head so that the money in the dormant account will be paid to you. The reason I contacted you to stand as the deceased next of kin is because the deceased operated this account secretly without the knowledge of anyone because he lied during his divorce that he didn't have any wealth except those he declared before the court and for this reason, he kept an open next of kin to this account. Since the dormant account is domiciled in my branch, I will provide you with all necessary information from my branch to back you up as the next of kin at our head office. I will also write a letter to our head office from my branch recommending that you are indeed the true next of kin to the deceased.

In view of this, I am seeking for your co-operation and understanding to stand as the next of kin to our deceased customer to enable us claim the fund from our bank. If this idea is accepted by you, kindly reply to me and upon your reply, I will give you details. On getting your response, we shall discuss on the percentage ratio to share the money upon conclusion. Note that this mail is intended to you the Director of the company.

Best Regards,

Mr. Fredrick

The really scary thing is some people like my old man who is not very computer literate, would totally fall for this sort of ****. These scammers should be electrocuted.

Even more scary, some people fall for it multiple times. One of the TV shows (60 minutes?) did an article on a guy that is out $500,000 because he kept thinking "This one will make me rich", despite having been bitten many times before.

If you've got the time, and want to mess with their heads/lives/repuations then head over to 419eater.com.

Lots of crackin' stories from guys who play along with the scammers for a laugh - and to waste as much of their time as possible while simultaneously humiliating them.

I second that, 419 eater is a hoot. So, any ideas how we can turn this around to waste this car scammers time and cause him some grief?
