Hi there I would like to know if it is legal to have a pod filter which is inside an enclosed airbox?

The reason I ask is I was recently defected for my M's Racing pod filter (along with exhaust, fmic and bov), which had its accompanying plastic cone-shroud surrounding it, apart from the opening at the front where it draws the air in. One of the police at the RTA testing station actually said it should be fine because it is covered up, but by the time the EPA goon had gone over the car, the pod was also added to the list.

The defect notice from the EPA stated: "Rectify increased induction noise (air filter). 5.6 "

I had to take the car to an DECC approved inspection station to clear the defects, and called the inspector before hand to find out the easiest way around the defects. His answer to everything was simply that "everything just had to be standard", which seems like a bit of a cop out on his part really. So anyway i fitted the stock airbox and passed.

But, my question is, if the only concern as listed is that the induction noise is too loud, therefore shouldn't a pod inside an enclosed box meet the requirements???
Or as a last resort could it at least be engineered???

Sometimes, the airbox can increase the induction noise, mine did as the induction noise was amplified and resonated off the metal box lol.

My advice is to make an 'as factory as possible' looking airbox, spray it black and hope for the best, if you get a prick copper you will get done for it anyways but it might just help you outsmart the dumb cops who don't know where the turbo is on a Toyota. :-)

Yeah that's what i want to do, make my car look totally standard (well it already does now, but want it to go hard while looking stock). But if they ever open the box up to check inside and see the pod, or find that I've got a BFI hidden under a plastic cover could i get fined again?

When the car went to the DECC inspector they took photos of everything, and said if I change anything again and get caught i will face huge fines...

This was the first time in 6 years I've been pulled over, and the car has has these mods the whole time. I'm mainly concerned that now my number plate will be in the system and not sure if cop cars have number plate recognition software, but if so, i'm sure i'll get pulled up often to see if I've changed anything back...

Not sure about NSW but a BFI isn't legal in Victoria, so probably not in NSW.

They are taking photos of every car they defect now. It all came about when they got their new tough book laptops.
