Interesting. The 5W30 covers very cold conditions, as it says in the book. We live in a hot country. I checked an oil poll on a northern hemisphere site and the votes were 43% for 10W40, 11% for 5W30 and 11-14% each for various other grades, yet we have warmer conditions here.

How does a poll verify what oil is "correct", David? It's opinion, not scientific fact nor is it related to what the manufacturer has stated. My handbook (for 1997 3.0) says 5W-20, which I don't use because I can't get it, but I've happily used 10W-30, and now 5W-30 since I can get it, for 5 years in two Soarers. The 5W-30 is rated for our temperatures so the fact that we live in a "hot" country is immaterial. The temp gauge in our car runs at exactly the same spot here in summer (40+C) as it did on Norfolk Is (rarely over 25C).

I did not assert any facts, Mike. I said, and I quote myself, it was "interesting" and I still think it is. The fact that I referred to a poll merely assembles the views of a group of owners. I placed it in counter to the stated view of Sean where he said "Read through this topic and you'll see that most people would agree [with 5W30]". In an actual poll rather than an opinion on possible opinions, most people do not agree, at a ratio of 9 to 1.

The temperature gauge has stuff all to do with it, and 5W30 is not in fact rated for our temperatures, as you will see below. The question is only the rate of engine wear, not whether the engine will fall apart in a kilometre.

The manual, of which I hold a copy, specifies "preferred" 5W30 for a temperature range from below -20 C to 38 C, a normal range for Japan or North America, the only places our cars were sold. It appears to me that this temperature range has little relevance in most parts of Australia. The manual also specifies 10W30 for the temperature range 0 C to 38 C or more. That is closer to what we encounter, largely within our normal range.

It appears reasonable to infer from the manual that 10 is a suitable rating if you do not live where temperatures are likely to be sub-zero, while 40 may be a most suitable rating if your temperatures range to 40 C or more.

In what respect is that faulty, or do you have some biblical view?

Nathan, you should carefully read the factory specs that have been pointed out in this thread.

What you are currently using appears to be way too thick.

Dispite your mechanics opinion you are doing your engine more harm than good and the suggestion that slowing down leaks with thicker oil is crazy and these leaks need to be properly resolved.

Something I will add is oil has changed over the last 15 years and currently thinner full syn like 5w-30 can still maintain I believe more protection due to better shear stress specs and higher viscosity at 100 deg C than oil of 15 years ago.

I have recently changed to use Amsoil 5w-40 as it has better or same cold specs and better hot specs than regular 10w-30, 10w-40 or 5w-30 oils which I could find manufactures specs to compare them to.

Given you are in NT a warmer climate I would say full syn 10w-40 would be fine but 25w-60 is way too thick mate.

Andrew WTF???? was that test using Castrol Magnatec??

I tried to get this at my last oil change but it was not available locally so I settled for second-best 10W-40 as it never gets down to zero where I am now. Were I still in Canberra, I would still be running 5W-30 in Winter, and that is on what the car has spent most of its time. You (Nathan) may need to adjust a little for where you are and the season but 25W-60 sounds way over the top for this engine. Even with years of driving, an engine designed to use something in the 5W-30 range up to an ambient 38 C is going to have trouble getting all its parts lubricated properly with a very thick oil, especially at start-up and regardless of the climate. I expect you are wearing the car more than running a 5W-30 in NT would.

Dhanushke, I've had two 3.0s and have used 5W-30 full synthetic (usually Castrol Edge) if I could get it, Havoline 10W-30 if I couldn't. Since I have changed at 5000km (mainly due time) I probably could have gotten away with semi-synthetic as full is wasted a bit in the low-stressed motor and low kms I do. Since I've often gotten Edge on special (when I could find it) I used that.

So any good oil would do- just don't go the 20W-50 or thicker route. My car is actually rated for 5W-20 (VVti) but I can't get it and if I could it would be very expensive.

In the light of comments above, Dhanushke, you could probably use 5W-40 or 10W-40 for summer. Frankly, I'm happy with 5W-30 and use it all year round, and I live in the tropics where the temps hit 47C, although I don't use the car much in that sort of heat, it being no. 3 car in terms of use. I only change my oil more-or-less annually anyway.
