Hey guys i have a V8 Soarer Limited, and i believe I got a good deal, but the saying goes you get what you pay for. Some people ask like 11-$13,000, while others only ask like $8,000. And they look like basically the same car in the same condition. You cant even get a good R32 Skyline Turbo for under 10 grand, and they are the most boring interiors on any import, as I had one previously. Do people sell their Soarer's for like 7-8 grand cos they are hard to sell?

Every now and then I think our language is getting screwed for no very good reason.

If one uses the conjunctive "and" then equivalently one can break the sentence in two at the conjunction.

Therefore, Justin says in his personal quotation (apostrophes routinely corrected):

quote:

"If it isn't broken, don't try. Fix it!"

I wonder if he meant to say "If it isn't broken, don't try to fix it!", creating an infinitive rather than an imperative. It is a very common mistake now, and not a trivial one in that it removes a meaningful distinction which can otherwise be made in a single sentence. I do not mind usage changes. I do mind loss of meaning. Stiff sh^t for me.

Anyway, on the subject, market prices are what they are and not necessarily the same in any two cities or between any two sellers. So, what is the question? Would you like to tell us you got a good deal or are you worried that you might not?

Hey David, don't let my little mistake keep you up at night, can anyone "normal" answer my question? RED-BOOK value sais around 8-11 grand for Soarer's, but not sure how accurate that is.

Plus David, my original qoute/mistake was "If it isnt broken, dont try and fix it", not a full stop, and you left out "and", so how about u practice what u preach.

Don't worry Justin, David is our resident man on grammar patrol. Personally i can appreciate some of his efforts as nothing pains me more than reading a person's poor attempt at a thread.

It was not THAT bad anyway.

Justin, your answer will be along shortly.

If you can buy r32 gtr for under 20k you can certainly buy r32(3s) skylines for under 10k and ive seen it.

I think 7 to 8k for a 15+ year old soarer is reasonable price.
Again people can try to sell if for whatever they want but its only worth what the buyer pays.

Im curious about what your asking Justin. Are you planning to sell your soarer?
If yes, i think you should sell now, in 6months it will get cheaper and cheaper...

No not planning on selling it at all. Only had it a month! Here in SA, Skyline's are still quite expensive, but I just think my Soarer is a better car, not as quick though .... YET!!

Nothing personal at all, Justin :-). Sometimes I just need the stimulus a good example to come out of hibernation on the subject.

i could have bought a uzz32 with 160 on it for 6 grand when i bought mine, was very clean too. But i'm far too young to drive something like that, You can't boost it!

I would like to know also what an R33 or R32 was worth in Japan new compared to a soarer. Never seen those figures.

Hmmmm from my observations Soarers are cheap and undervalued for the following reasons:

-Toyota, people just see them as another one.
-Age, these cars are now 18 years old for the first models - that scares people.
-Mileage, a lot have higher k's on them, further scaring people off
-Economy, they aren't cheap to run, putting more people off
-Complicated, most people hear 'bad' stories about them and think they are expensive to maintain, though they are in some ways.

I like them regardless of those reasons.

We all know what great cars they are! So it's our gain!

Mike, have a look at one in a non-boring colour like yellow or orange. They are pretty hot stuff!

But they are definitely a VIP style car rather than any sort of performance inclined car. (Nothing a turbo or supercharger kit cant fix)

5-7k will get u a nice v8 soarer in Queensland. Reason for the cheap prices I think is that market is flooded with them, age, they are heavy and autos turning off people wanting to go fast, and they are starting to look dated and many have yellowed headlights, crap paint and the fact they are v8 when petrol prices are going up again turns off non-performance buyers. Simply too much supply and not enough demand. My friend was looking at camries and accords in the 5k price range and i pushed him into a mint uzz31 for $5000 with 6 months rego and he loves it. Much more value for money.

Bobby, I am tempted to ask, "Who's u?" but your post actually tells me that Soarers are inadequately marketed. Think about the two themes in what you wrote.

Nobody advertises Soarers. Look at the Kia Cerato ads on with the tennis. Imagine what a campaign like that would do for a Soarer, even an 18-year old one.

Alex, if NSW has its way you will have no option, which might drive you to run yourself on alcohol instead;

David, I see that you have a V8 Ltd with a manual box. I'd like to pull the crappy auto out of mine (this is the first auto I have owned, and I still prefer shifting it through the gears manually to prevent boredom) and convert to a W58. How much more "driveable" does it make your car?

My guess - the possibilities are endless. There's just nothing to match manipulating the machine yourself... hence why I love my bikes.

Brilliantly.

It is a completely different feeling in the car. No more slush, just direct response in proportion to the throttle. The fact it is a five speed rather than a four speed gearbox also has a significant impact. Middle-gear overtaking is superb. Fourth gear handles most of the highway overtaking (when not cruising by in fifth) but third is there when you want to be really quick about it.

Sounds the way I pictured it. I really hate the slow build-up to 4000rpm when the power starts coming on harder - I've driven Camrys with more bottom end snap than the Soarer. Having said that, once it winds up it'll eat the Camry alive, but I like my power to come on strong and hard from the second I depress the throttle pedal.

Why would Toyota do an advertising campaign for an 18 year old car that was never even sold localy in this market? I think they are great value for money, but there is simply no demand for these cars. Lexus ES300 depreciate even worse though, $75k new at the dealership in 1995 and you can pick them up $2,000 to $4,000 now.

Yes, Bobby, but the ES300 was total crap. It was a Camry with badges. Notice there is no longer a front-wheel drive Lexus? They recognised the disaster. Even back in 2000 they were trying to give an ES300 away to me but it was so bad I bought a Volvo instead

Glen, with a manual you find it pulls comfortably from 2000 but the grunt starts at 3000. If you take off enthusiastically from the lights watch out to shift before 6200 RPM in 1st or 2nd. Having the car totally die on you can be embarrassing.

After having driven the fathers brand new Maxima with the VQ engine, I'd happily swap my soarer for a V35 any day

Sorry, but too many people wearing rose tinted glasses in here.

Soarers are nice, but they are not the be all and end all of japanese motoring.

If it werent for the disappointing market for them, I'd be advertising mine too right about now

Of course you cant get a 3.5 litre Maxima for $5000, so you have to take that into account too...

David, I have to disagree about your comments of a camry.

They are fantastic cars. Yes the ES300 was greatly overpriced when brand new but the car is one of the best mass produced vehicles in the world.

They are ultra reliable, handel well, good breaks (they have the same breaks as stock V8 soarer but the car is 200kg lighter), good performing engine (same design as 1uz just 60 deg V6 instead of 90 deg V8 they are smoother and more efficient than the 1uz, they have great ergonomics for the dash layout, consol layout (there was one model over the years that they stuffed up the consol layout) seat position ect and you can ride in them all day and get out not feeling stiff and tired.

They also drive brilliantly, super smooth and comfortable and the steering feel is fantastic. They just have a silky smooth feel to them and they track brilliantly requiring near zero corrections even over routs making them effortless to drive at 100km/hr on the fwy.

IMO there is not a better car that I would rather drive for long trips on the FWY whilst on cruise control at 100km/hr.

As for the price of a V8 soarer like any car of this age it all comes down to condition.

Some will fech 3k and are suitable for wrecking and others will fech 15-20k and be almost like new.

You will probably find that a good used V8 that is well maintained and clean is worth about 10k maybe a little more depending on the options ect.

What car would you rather drive on a freeway? Assuming you mean a Camry, I had one as a company car from about 1992-1995 and, yes, it was terrifically smooth and reliable and went decently well. However, the ES300 in 2000 handled like a sick pig. Perhaps they had softened it for the market. Perhaps my expectations had risen. I do not know.

I meant to convey that the reason for the dramatic depreciation of an ES300 was that it was not a "Lexus" in the first place. It was a mass-market vehicle with different badges. You could no more put Lexus badges on a Corolla, flog it for $60,000 next to an IS250, and not expect its price to fly like a pig off a cliff.

Perhaps I should have added respectfully disagree as you opinions are well informed and I do agree with lots of your comments particularly related to cars handeling and tyre reviews and choices.

Interesting about the 2000 model maybe they did make a change to the Lexus badged version. There has now been 15 camry's well 14 and 1 aurion in my extended family and we have pretty much covered all model's and variations and I have been in most of them over the years, they are all very similar.

Anyway as you say that is why they haven't kept there value, I believe the ES300 had sat nav as the only extra option not available on the top of the line camry but sat nav isn't going to worth the 25 to 35k more second hand.

The Camry is without a doubt Toyota's world car. You can buy them in any country that has a road and a petrol bowser, and I agree with both David and Damian... they're reliable and cost-effective motoring, but I wouldn't own one myself because they lack character. I concur wholly with the comment I read about them in Top Gear mag:

"Don't be fooled by thinking you're buying anything other than safe, reliable, staid five-seater transport."
