I think that K Rudd is a car enthusiast and he doesn't even know it. He is buying me a new intercooler and my mate a boost controller. What other goodies is he buying the soarer community?

He didn't buy me anything except higher tax down the road.
Really love how my future tax was given away to people to blow on car bits, and ciggies and grog.

For those that don't understand, when the govt spends money and runs into defecit it has to be paid back by tax dollars in the years to come. This handout (which will do nothing for the economy) has run the govt into billions of dollars of debt.

I didn't get any of it this time and I'll pay again later, so live it up kids coz hopefully you'll be helping to pay it back as well.

If you are not getting any Paul, then either you earn over $100K/year or else you paid no nett tax in 2008, whatever you earned.

I am curious to know whether any of you think there is any legitimate purpose for which government can incur debt?

Yes it can be a good thing but I don't agree with the current package.

I would invest the money in building better roads, new greener power plants or other similar large scale projects that will create better infastructure.

This in turn will create jobs and keep the wheels turning.

He's helping us buy some air conditioning for the house.
And i'm paying taxes, have done all my life.. it's good to get a little bit back.
I disagreed with the previous package, because the people who got it then wern't spending it where it needs to be spent. Whereas working people are almost guarenteed to spend it. That's why we're working..

i agree with chris i have been paying tax, and will continue to do so. obviously i dont have the knowledge to understand a GREAT deal but enough to understand why its there and what not, so im just going to do with what is supposed to be done with it, im not affected by the global economy, so.. the only thing keeping my pockets empty is car problems hahahaha!

Damian's response is much more to the point than ranting about bloody lefty governments creating debt, particularly when bloody righty governments are creating the same debt for the same purpose. Stopping investment entirely will do nothing for the economic well-being of our descendants, or do people here who own shares invest only in companies with zero debt, because debt has to be paid off? Borrowed to buy a house, ever?

Asset deflation and a reduction in acceptable risk are necessary and causing pain but allowing things to stall entirely will cause far wider damage than that. People make financial decisions on emotion or poor assessment of probabilities and sometimes they have to be talked or even bribed into keeping the economy moving. Read the literature on behavioural finance.

A better question for discussion is how or where the money is spent or how much of it, not whether some should be spent.

I'm not 100% for the hand out either, but it's happening, so we have to make the most of it. If we really want to do this, we should be spending the money on items/services that will actually make an impact on the Australian economy. For everyone that's just spending their payment on imported Jap car parts, you're not doing sh*t to help the Aussie economy. If you really want to use the payments for what they're meant to be for, then spend it at your local mechanics or paint shop/panel beater or buy products that are 100% Aussie made and owned.

That's what they are meant for, but quite frankly, I don't really give a sh*t what people do with them!

Dave,
Combined income with the missus was about $500 over the threshold so we don't get anything. Can't claim anything on tax either with my job so we pay the full tax applicable.

There are heaps of better ways the economy could have been stimulated, my personal favourite is reducing excise and gst on diesel and ensure the transport savings are passed on. That way everything that is transported is cheaper and everybody can buy more stuff.

I have had lots of debt in the past but have got out of that game now. Now that cash is king, I am renting a house and keeping my cash handy.

Taking my money to the European economy!! (and I'm not the only one...there are tens of thousands who will use the money for other economies)

...Don't get me started about Labour...please...its for the best.

Damn it...too late...
My thoughts...allow an Australian made subsidy for products that are 100% Aussie. Meaning, people can go to the shops, and purchase australian made goods up to the value of $900 which the government would then re-pay (or the consumer would not even have to pay, the shop could claim the purchase back on the government)

Still not ideal, but better than just handing out cash and hoping for the best. Just like giving Pacific brands cash with no conditions, helping them to upgrade their equipment - which guess what - they are now taking overseas!! So the Government has helped them be more productive in a foreign economy...thats generous!! Instead of having a legal contract with conditions on the money like, pacific brands must continue at least 80% of their operations within Australia for the next 5 years...they are now just 'pleading' with Pacific Brands to not go overseas, to which they replied...too bad, and legally, the government can't do squat. Geez, now that is the type of Government I want controlling the country.

So annoying that the government is giving away my tax dollars with no conditions attached, why would they care? Its not their money. Only care about temporary popularity with the population whom the majority want something for nothing. They don't realise the future problems. We have just gone from having a surplus, to having over $10,000 debt for every man, woman and child in Australia...just crazy! Who has to pay that back, with interest???? US!! You think Kevin Rudd is gonna chop out and cover the debt?

People, people, people...history has showed us time and time again that the labour governments could not organise a root in a brothel. They are good at only one thing...debt!! For god sakes wake up.

Told you not to get me started...

Enjoy your $900 people...you're going to end up paying back 5 times as much.

Paul, it is not done on combined income but single incomes. It is perfectly possible for each of two earners in a family to get it.

Christian, so, you are against trade then, are you? Why stop at Australia? You could always limit your expenditures to Victorian products so you did not send money to the wastrels in NSW or layabouts further North who make plenty of money shipping minerals to China. Better still, spend money only on products manufactured within your own shire so it benefits your local council, or pay nothing to the government by purchasing only those products manufactured in the street in which you live, or your own back yard.

The problem with Pacific Brands is not that they are leaving, it was that they were ever given money in the first place to protect local industry along the lines you argue, just like Kodak. Which government did that?

For the record,
  • I am not expecting any money because, being a retiree funded entirely from my own previous exertions, saving and investment, I paid no nett tax last year.
  • I am stirring the pot about economics, not politics. :-)

One more item about foreign debt. Australia has heaps of it already. It has just been privatised, that's all. Now the government wants to get back into the market, for better or worse.

David,

You sound like a smart guy.

Of course I'm not against trade, I don't know how anybody could be...but I'm just saying if the whole point is to stimulate our economy with the money, then put conditions on it to keep it in our economy.

That was my point somewhere within my rantings about the government. lol.

David,
Maybe we are talking about different payments, there have been a couple. Either way I haven't received any money from the government since my measly tax return in August. Which was just the Tax Office giving me some of my own money back anyway.
Just because Aus has heaps of foreign debt doesn't make it right to get more. We need to start thinking of debt as bad or we'll never get out of this.
Surely a retiree like yourself can see that saving up for stuff worked better than the current mess.

Blah blah blah. Bottom line it's a crap way to spend $40B on nothing in particular, with no discernible improvement in the economy as a result. Didn't work in December, won't work in April.

Plus it pisses me off that the people who paid it to the government don't get to join in the spending spree. He's literally taking money from one group, to give it to another and tell them to enjoy spending it. Jesus at least let everyone join in.

If you are not a Centrelink beneficiary (and evidently you are not, Paul) then do not expect cash before April. It will just pop in to your account or arrive by cheque, with no notice about whether you are entitled.

$10b on handouts, $32b on infrastructure/actual stuff, not quite nothing in particular.

$5 billion given out in December, and already in march were in financial trouble.... If 5Billion couldnt help more than 3 mths, no amount of handouts will help. Small business Tax benefits would benefit alot, help keeping them afloat in hard times, and keepin people employed /shrug.

2 cents worth.

Then you get to join in the spending spree because you can already afford it. :-)

That's a disgusting attitude.

I will be over later today with 10 peasants to take some cash and furniture out of your house. Because you can afford it.
