I know tyres have been covered here a lot, but the local trye guy is recommending Starfire Tyres, apparently from the US. I couldn't find any real info on them via google and other forums and wondered if anyone had heard any reports on them, especially for use on a Soarer. I need a set of for rego and can't afford the outlay for Yokohamas etc, but don't want a Nankang type either. Next recommended was the Toyo Proxis 4 about $50 ea more than the Starfire

They are a proprietry brand of Coopers, who make some decent 4x4 off road tyres and Mickey Thompsons. However, I'm pretty sure the Starfires are made in China for the Asian Pacific market and wouldn't have a speed rating more than H (210 km/hr). The Toyo Proxes 4 aren't fantastic but are W speed rated which is very good up to 270km/hr. I'd take the Proxes. Alternatively, if you just want a set for rego get some second hand import tyres. Very cheap and will last a few months at least.

I have decided to throw some more money at the tyres and go with the Michelin PP2's. I weighed up the pros and cons of cheapies versus premiums and came up with a middle of the road tyre which should do the job. Even recommended by Peter Scott on Planetsoarer. On special at Jax Tyres for $239 until the end of the month. I have a terrible tramlining problem with the wrong type of tyre on this car so I have gone for an assymetrical one without any big directional grooves that will still handle good in the wet. Hope I have made the right choice.

By "PP2" did you mean "PS2"? Pilot Preceda or Pilot Sport 2? I presume the Precedas given the price. You should be happy with them. We tried Precedas on one of the smaller cars in the family and they perform well.

Yes Pilot Preceda 2. The current special at Jax is for either Michelin PP2 $239, Dunlop 3000A $235 or Pirelli Dragon $227. This is for 235 x 45 x 17. Googling them will give you mixed results from every forum so it is impossible to really make an informed decision between the 3. Cheaper options are the Falken ZE912 $175 or the Toyo Proxes 4 at $235. My brain is starting to hurt.
