Just wanted to find out what engine oil people are using for their 1UZ's...

I've been using Castrol Edge Sport 5W-30 for the last few changes, and wanted to source some alternatives.

Just wanted to know some different opinions..

Cheers, Sean.

I agree with the choice of Castrol Edge 5W-30, I've used it for a couple of years (in JZZ-31). It's a lot cheaper than Mobil 1.

Vinny, why would you change synthetic oil every two months?

I used to use Mobil 1 until it priced itself out of the market.
Currently run Penrite 5, semi synthetic, and change at 5,000Ks

That's the oil dealers usually put in our Rexton (don't have any choice- lease car).

I'm not sure why 40 weight oils are considered for these motors, my manual says 5W-20 (which is virtually unobtainable) or 5W-30. The '95 didn't have a manual, but I used 10W-30 Havoline because it was all I could get at the time. No way would I have used 15W-40 or even worse, 20W-50 which were the only other oils available.

Mike... the Humidity up here in Darwin sucks...Generally after 2 months the contaminent levels are too high.(T.A.N test carried out before changing(Total Acid Number).so I just change it rather then suffering any posible internal damage..$80 for oil and filter is a lot cheaper then a rebuild in my eyes..Most oils have a slight degree of hydroscopic qualities and just relying on Klm's isn't good enough.Personally prefer prevention then the cost of cure.

Fair points, Vinny, if you've done oil testing. I'd make the point that moisture should not build up in an engine that's used for decent distances (I've found that here in Exmouth even the tyres don't warm up on the run to work which is 38km). No matter how humid the environment, moisture shouldn't build up in the oil if it's sufficiently warm. Short runs around town are a different matter. Our cars does exactly that, short runs, but every few months it has a decent run which should theoretically burn off moisture (not that Exmouth is a humid area).

I can't get decent oil of right viscosity locally and frankly, bi-monthly oil changes would drive me nuts!

Thanks everyone, I wasn't entirely sure about the Castrol Edge as it always seems to be on special, but it seems to be doing a good job. I also change mine every 5,000 and use Ryco filters. They're fairly cheap, but i've heard no bad reports.

Mike....yep lots of short trips Its only 5 klm's to work for me,still spitting moisture out of the exhaust when i get there.I do Oil testing regularly at work (RB211'S CFM56's and V2500's being the major ones)Most week-ends it gets a reasonable "Blast"(even with the reduced speed limit of 130 it still builds up)

I usually buy the Castrol for the same reason, Sean. Why pay $80 when you can get oil just as good for $40 (or sometimes less)? I'll be stocking up on it when away after Xmas as can't get it locally and rarely on special in Carnarvon Repco and have to pay freight on top. Nulon also make a 5W-30 but haven't seen it for sale anywhere.

Vinny, we're so sympathetic about your "reduced" speed limit. Our distances are even bigger than yours, and we're stuck to a pedestrian 110 km/hr (although many sit on 120-130:-)). I've slowed down a bit lately- cops keep popping up in the weirdest places and are are pretty savage, people getting done for 120km/hr. Most of the time I'm in the 4Wd anyway and the fuel economy falls markedly over 110.

Hmmm, fair enough.

Bit thin for old engines like these.

But yours is a bit newer so stay closer to the recommended grade.

Mike, no oil is "too thin for these engines", unless you're actually talking water-like fluids. They're finely made Japanese Swiss clocks, not ancient American iron with clearances you could drive a bus through. Using thick oil puts strain on components like oil pumps, and kills fuel economy.

That's very true Mike, nice comparison too. I have actually gone off the thicker alternatives as of recently, they seem unnecessary, and potentially damaging as to what you say... makes complete sense.

While owning last two V8 Toyota's I have stuck to 10W-50, rather than the more viscous grade, 15W-60... I don't think I would use that again, not in this Soarer anyway. Next time I might try HPR5 and see how that goes compared to the HPR10 oil..

Speaking of oils in the new year I might pay & send away some samples of oil from my 1UZ's engine to see what the wear metal counts are like - the original 10W-40 oil that came with the car was really dirty and I have some stored away since changing it back in May, so I would be fascinated to see what is actually within it compared to the Penrite 10W-50 oil that's currently in the car. It's actually due for a change thinking about it, even though I have only done a few thousand k's.

I have used HPR5, 10 and 15 with no noticeable smoke or change in oil consumption.

I would probably lean towards 10 when I feel conservative. :-)

I had a return valve failure in a Ryco filter once. Was years and years ago though, but I'd still never buy one again. They were locally (NZ) manufactured then I think, and I don't think they are any more.

Hi Guys,

The manual for the 1uz states 5w-30 or 10w-30 depending on the climate.

Mike I have seen the 3lt oil specs and I though it was the same as the V8, not 5w-20 can you confirm.

As to running a 15w-60 I wouldn't even think about it. They may be not new engines but the oil galleries are still the same. Sure bearing clearances have increased a little bit but no where near enough to allow oil of such a different grade to be suitable..

I have used 5w-30 Amsoil without any issues with nearly zero oil consumption and it certainly didn't need to be topped up.

I had zero measurable oil consumption with 10w-30 and 5w-40.

Damian, we have the VVTi engine and also have the original owner's manual (in Japanese of course) and it has a graphic with something like "economy, use 5W-20" but the usual bar graph has as you say, mostly 5W-30 or 10W-30 depending on temp. I believe Honda and Ford in US also went to 5W-20. I've read that 5W-20 is not a good oil for hot summer conditions in US and the fuel saving over the 30 weight is not worth the risk to engine.

I can scan the page, but I always run into problems getting the pic small enough to post!

Interesting information.

I also agree with the risk/bennifit of the 5w-20.

But if you do want to use that weight of oil it can be purchased from motor bike shops and Amsoil.

I noted that Amsoil list 5W-20 and used it years ago (in a different grade, of course:-)) in my BMW bikes. However the price is steep and I have enough trouble getting 5W-30 in the bush without worrying about the rarer grade (which I wouldn't use here in the hot climate of NW WA anyway).

The 1UZ generally don't wear bearings or bores - at all - so i wouldn't stray too far from the factory recommended fill. Remember though, a supercharged engine or track work will destroy / break down an 'economy' oil very quickly to the point where its no longer working at its rated viscosity. Using a heavier oil gives a bigger margin / lifetime under those conditions.

I find it hard to explain why there's so much shim wear in these engines, yet typically unscathed bores or bearings. Thick oil syndrome? Or thin / broken oil because of high operating temps..

Miles, I figure its either heavy oil most guys seem to use not making its way to the top of the engine fast enough on a regular basis (every startup perhaps) or the recommended fill light economy oils breaking down early and causing valvetrain wear.

In my experience there aren't many quite 1UZ's around, theres a pattern of valvetrain noise which would be attributed to shim clearances.

Considering the bottom ends are generally in pristine condition, i don't think its caused by a lack of servicing. On that note, you could be right Miles. Design issue? or long term driving habbits?

Shim noise was a big problem in my old OHC 2 litre Triumph too, in that case it was caused by British Leyland shoddy engineering - they failed to use properly hardened shims (no doubt in a cost cutting move), and over time they would just get squished. You could see it quite clearly with a micrometer - after 50,000 miles the shim would be quite a bit thinner than its stamped size and sit a lot more snug in its housing. Also they operated directly onto the valve stem which would also deform over time (crazy!)

25W-60 is great for sloppy old American V8s and boat-anchor Australian sixes, not modern Jap engines.

Used to use the Mobile 1.

It actually goes better now.

Just to start, how about using factory spec oil or in the very least compare the oil you are using to factory specs.

i have a few oil leaks and my mechanic told me to use this thicker oil as it leaks slower and is a little harder to detect in an inspection.
im unsure of the factory oil specs what are they ??
what oil do you recommend then ?

In my Original Soarer book, Toyota recommends 5W-30, or 10W-30 if the other is unavailable. But i'd be using 5W-30.

Read through this Topic and you'll see that most people would agree.
