Hakan, its bad karma to slag off someone if the full story is not presented.

I know the full story as Mike Dobkin and I are part of it. So I'm not some idle bystander basing my opinion purely on what is posted on that thread. Under the circumstances, I believe that posting up that thread here is fully justified and everyone should be aware of people like that and avoid business dealings with him.

Its unfortunate that some people have gotten burnt, as Tim said earlier its a risk you take buying online. Having said that, I have the opportunity to rectify the situation with a visit to QLD soon so we'll see what happens.

maybe if we have a trading score like the supra forums so that if you sell or buy something you can get points or a percentage or feedback like ebay and its displayed next to their name

That would be ideal. Often it's too easy to think all will be fine buying from another Soarer Central member... sadly now days this is not the case.

I wonder if it's a possibility on this forum platform however... Pen will be the man to ask about it.

You could possibly just have moderators collect evidence of sales from members and when someone is buying and is curious about another member's history a moderator could then say:
"yes John has bought 3 items and sold 2 with good feedback"

Hmm

Site owners and moderators have to be very careful not to take implicit responsibility for commercial dealings between users of their site. Pen is absolutely right not to accept it.

Here and elsewhere, newbies can have their sale posts removed but that is just a matter of keeping out the more obvious opportunists who want to take something from the site while giving nothing, rather than being a practice of care for members.

I notice also that most dodgy sellers tend to come out of the blue. There is no obvious record to point to the problem so I think in most cases someone is going to get burned before we know. Also, I know of no-one who has been convicted except in the court of forum opinion.

what about if you could have a section in each persons profile page underneath where people can have a section to post whether they have had good or bad dealings with the customer and what they bought so it can be for anyone who wants to see who they are about to buy off or sell to

Most of the bad sales are first time anyway. If you are about to deal with someone, use Search to find their track record on here rather than asking for a popularity poll.

*** Copied and pasted from another thread, just looks more relevant here ***

I reckon it would be a good idea to have a TRADERS FEEDBACK section/topic.

So once you buy something off a person you can put a honest thread up in it using his name as the thread title. Then before you go to buy something 'do a search'... and if you buy it, update his thread giving him either kudos or a hard time.

Yes would be kinda a pain to police, but only if dramas happened i spose.
*just a suggestion

How about new members or maybe even everyone registered on this forum has to provided an imagine of their drivers license and their license number is recorded on a database. That way if goes down its easier for the police to deal with and also potentially scares of any scammers as they need to provide a link back to them in order to sell anything?

Yeah its a bad idea to collect too much information about anyone. As it is I was very reluctant to give out my name.

Where i work i work with a lot of data and with only a few facts i could potentially (and unethically) find records about you which you wouldn't normally want people to know. All i really need is your name, your rough address (to filter out other people with the same name) and even a rough age. Luckily all that information is pretty much here for some members. Also luckily I'm not that kind of guy.

But all it takes is one dishonest member to take what is already here to find enough about someone to do some damage.

EG: I could tell you about your subscriptions to your gas, electricity, telephone lines. Not just subscriptions, your tax, your bank account balance and transactions (for some banks) the list goes on.

You know why I wouldn't? Its not just ethically, its also boring (oh and i'd lose my job). I don't care. You're one in a million. But if you give someone a reason to, they might care and do something about it. Thats a situation worth avoiding.

Someone always handles that kind of information, which is why you can see it yourself when you request it.

Also I know theories about how to access sql databases through sending dummy information to return information. Even if its not public, if you send it to someone via the site it's probably cached or stored here somewhere, and all it takes is sending the right request to retrieve it.

Your informational security should honestly be highly protected. I urge you all to consider this when posting publicly and filling in online forms.

PS: this might sound threatening, but I honestly wouldn't ever be unethical in my job. Its low pay sure but i couldn't honestly live with the guilt for the small thrill of shocking someone and low pay or not, I need the money :-)

Nope, i work in a company which takes in data from all around australia and processes it for them. You'd probably never have heard of us but i'd say 50% of what you read in the mail is from us. We have clients like ATO, Local and state bodies, telstra (and its smaller parts like bigpond and sensis), BoQ, CBA. I could keep listing but it'd take a very long time.

Its scary how much data is carelessly passed around. Only ATO required me to get some kind of clearance... that also scares me.

What about if people list in their profile other forum members that they know or have met that can vouch for them.
For e.g. I've met Rob Rojo, Daniel Clarke, Michael Keen, three long time and respected members so if I were to sell anything on here they could vouch for me saying that I am a real person.
Also having a buyer feedback section on everyone's profile might help.

I think perhaps just a set of buying guidelines in a sticky might be enough:

1) Buyer beware. Not all scammers can be stopped.

2) Check the seller. if he's new, see if he's a friend of someone on the forum who can vouch. If he's not new, check his previous sales, or ask people who might have seen him at cruising meets.

3) If it sounds too good, enquire some more. Call them, msn them, ask for details. If they really have it then they should know everything about it. If they have difficulty answering your question be weary.

4) Try to get someone to vouch for each persons first sale. Turn up to a meet, catch up with another person. Make a few posts.

5) Buyer beware.

The real problem is, that there are no guarantees of any sort. One of the members complained about in this thread has been a member since July 26, 2005, and has done 340 posts. There are 285 posts left, so most likely 55 were in since deleted buy/sell threads which may well have indicated that he was reliable - at that time.

Yep i'm still doing the same...... nobody can do anything about it which really pisses me off.

On a brighter note, i have dealt with so many members on here over the years and have always been honest with selling and buying. If someone wasn't happy i did all i could to sort out the issue.

Members who contribute to the site have more respect than members who just sign up days before and start selling. Generally members of this club are great to deal with, only with the couple of idiots and thieves who ruin it all for every one else.

I bought a soarer part off ebay and never received the item, I put in a claim to paypal which was ruled in my favour but paypal is unable to recover the funds and he is no longer a registered ebayer. Paypal is unable to recover the funds? So, that suggests that Paypal's vaunted buyer protection scheme, the reason we are supposed to use Paypal, works only when they are not personally out of pocket in any respect. Your protection works solely on a pass-through basis.

Fascinating.

I hate Paypal. In the fields of finance and contracts, this is a rare emotional luxury I allow myself.

I bought a full set of Branz bushes for my Soarer a couple of months ago. I didn't need the rear ones, so asked if I could return them for a refund. I was told that "I'd be more than happy to give you a refund." Well a month later, no refund and I called him and was told that times are tough, but that the money would be in my account in a couple of days! Two weeks later still nothing, so I threatened to out my being ripped off on this forum and he finally responded that he would return the bushes to me by express mail by last Tuesday. Surprise, surprise, the bushes haven't shown. Do not buy any parts from Soarerparts.com, apparently the business has no cash flow and the owner is a compulsive liar.

Bernie, I expalined to you that I has recently become un employed and that these parts were my only livelihood I also explained that I could not just return the funds as I did not the money to do it.

This was a very sensitive and embarrassing subject for me... as who likes to admit they are struggling to make ends meet.
Yet you take all that you impatient prick and still post on a public forum... well at least I get the right of reply.

You mention the one phone call, yet you fail to mention the relevant words, I will "try" to get it to you in the next few days.
You may accuse me of not communicating well enaough, but thats all.
I was informed about your post tonight, I had already returned your funds this morning. as you well know.

I have always dealt fairly with everyone on this site, and gone out of my way to help people.

It's arsholes like you that will eventually lead to me not supplying anyone on this or any other forum that does not control the idiots who feel they have the right to act like pricks.

It would have been easier to send the bushes back but I waited as I knew I had funds coming and I was also aware you wanted the money not the bushes. You have told half truths and lies and it looks like you will get away with it as no one seems to give a rats.

I hope you feel morally justified with your actions I know I have done the right thing.

Every week I try to help people repair or fix some problem which benefits the soarer cummunity as a whole..

tell me something Bernie what have you done to help people keep their cars going?????

You are another leech sucking what you can from society and giving nothing back.

Actually I have one more thing to say

I just went back through the time frame you inpatient prick ...it took less than 4 weeks to process the refund..

It is incredible to me that you want to send parts back you have ordered and expect that refunds will get done in your time frame, I reluctantly agreed to take them back... I might have said I am happy to take them back in an email... but thats just polite!!!! something you have no understanding of.
I at no point promised to process a refund in any particular time frame.
It took less than 4 weeks to process and get the money back to you what is so bad about that????
Try getting a refund from Telstra in 4 weeks you moron.

I hope you choke on the bushes and your money

Well, I don't know what the law is in Australia, but in NZ retailers do not have to give refunds on non-faulty merchandise. Many do, just to be polite, or offer store credit, but they don't have to.

If he ordered something he didn't need, its his own damn problem I say.

Sounds like you did your best Peter, unfortunately when dealing with the public you are always going to come across self righteous pricks like this who will never be satisfied even if you give them the shirt of your back.

Don't let it get you down, I know eventually I'm going to need to buy some bushes and would hate to think I'd have to pay OEM prices for them because someone like this guy had made you give up.

Still. As someone who has never dealt with you Peter, those posts wouldn't encourage me to. As a hot head myself though I probably would have written the same.

On a bike forum I belong to a few people put "successful trades with (insert members name here)" in their profiles.

As for the paypal thing a while back in the thread, it is a joke. I got royally ripped by a seller for a few thousand and paypal did squat. They are the most disorganised, non accountable, behind closed doors dealing bunch of turds to grace this earth. In case you can't tell, I'm a little annoyed

You are quite correct Miles I should not have been so hot headed.. I suppose sharing very personal things with a client just to have this happen it made me very upset and angry.. hence the post..
I have had disgruntled clients before and have always managed to keep them happy without resorting to abuse..

I would like to vouch for Peter. I purchased an accumulator from Peter a few months back and it still didn't fix my brake problem, which made me think the new accumulator was also faulty. Peter sent me another one very quickly when I contacted him. Turned out the accumulator was OK and another part was at fault.

I've never dealt with Peter personally, but he is held in a very high regard by the older Soarer members, so I wouldn't hesitate to deal with him.

At the rate I'm restoring my 32 (accumulators, struts, master cylinder, bushes) it will be 99% Toyota and 1% Peter/Branz. There would also be a few other 32's around in the same boat. Never had a problem with him, and always got free/cost replacement/checks/etc of anything I wasn't sure about. Hard to complain about somebody who does this as a hobby, and diagnoses problems over the phone/email for free for customers.

Another vouch for Peter after buying a fuel filter off him. He explained he didn't have one in stock but there was some arriving in a couple days so I waited and received it within a week. Good honest bloke.
