They are rubbish, don't buy them.

This was the only tyre I have ever had fail and I had too tyres fail both replaced under warranty.

There performance is poor grip wise and they don't drive well, tramline and are noisy once not brand new.

My advice is to buy something else.

No idea about 712's however ill be gooing Kumho KU36's next as they are a street legal semi slick. I hear they are very good, even better than Proxxies and are damn cheap. If anyone is interested there is a guy from NSW or something selling them on nissansilvia.com as a site sponsor. Worth a look as he is doing heaps of sizes at decently discounted prices.

A lot of their tyres don't seem to be all that well priced for a supposed "budget" brand - only model I could find in the size I'm looking for was $299 AU - considering I've been quoted a set of Goodyear Eagle F1 GS-D3's at $329 NZD each fitted and balanced - I'd much rather have a Goodyear than a Kumo.

KU36 have a very hard compound compared to a real semi slick. They look nice though and are cheap. If your car is a daily I think they make a lot of sense.

Bobby, just to clarify they are not even close to a semi slick. They were built to be a street tyre and are called by Kumho to be a passenger tyre.

Local distributors are calling them a street legal semi slick as a marketing ploy but they are no softer than other ultra high performance tyres such as Pilot sports, F1's, and they are harder than the RE050A's which have a tread wear of 140.

I wouldn't buy either [or any] of them.

Matthew's idea is good.

First class tyres are about half the cost per kilometre of petrol and they will do a load more for your driving experience, speed and safety than will a 3 point increase in octane rating. So, why aren't you buying the best?

After an awful lot of research and frustration (like ordering 93v and getting 92v and having to send them back) I Just bought a set of New Toyo Proxies F4Z 245/50/16 96v on ebay for $120 each then add freight and fitting total another $35 ea less if you can pick them up, they will fit them if your in Sydney.
They are 3 yr old japanese stock.
But at a $220 a set saving and my usage they won't rot on the car.
There are other suitable brand name tyres there as well.

The KU36 are not a "budget" tyre, in fact Tirerack rate them in the class above the Goodyears you bought.

Although they are not the best street tyre you can get, they are still a very good performance street tyre and the fact that they are very well priced compared to other performance tyres makes them a good buy

In any case, the Kumho 712 (supra) is not even in the same league as either of them, plus at only $20 more from Option1 compared to the KU37 you cant go wrong

Tirerack in its own ratings and in the consumer consumer opinions, shows the KU36 to have slightly better dry performance with significantly worse wet performance. All of this is despite the Goodyear being a six-year-old design. The newer Goodyear asymmetric is rated higher again.

I didn't buy the Goodyear yet, its between them an some Toyo Proxes 4, which are a good touring tyre and about $100 cheaper than the Goodyear.

All I know is I bought some Hankook Ventus HR II's last time on what I thought was good advise, and that on top of the Champiro's I had bad experiences with in the pasts and I am never buying another Korean tyre again, they are terrible for the money I paid for them, and not a patch on the Bridgestones they replaced.

From now on I'm sticking to Japanese and European tyres.

Toyo have a good reputation, but beware buying old stock, even modern compound tyres have a "use by" date. 3 years should be fine though, as even natural rubber compounds are good for 5 or 6 years.

For the last 5-6 year Hankook have made very very nice driving tyre. They ride well have great feel and low noise but there grip levels have been a bit down on the bench marks like PS, F1's ect. This is a generalisation every tyre is different but it seems to be fairly consistent across Hankooks range.

According to this review I would given the V12 EVO's a shot.

http://www.caranddriver.com/reviews/comparisons/09q2/tire_test_nine_affordable_summer_tires_take_on_ the_michelin_ps2-comparison_tests

IMO and I own a set of KU36's they are budget tyres and they are certainly not great tyres. The KU36 do offer good on paper specs in certain areas but the overall driving experience is not in the league of pilot sports F1's ect.

I would strongly not recommend these tyres for a daily driver or anyone that drives in wet conditions.

Good article. Hah, Ling-longs still make me laugh. Given that corporate China has no qualms about poisoning infants, there is no way I would ever buy a Chinese tyre. They probably make them from ground up newspaper and cigarette butts.
