So i'm taking the soarer for a nice long cruise to bathurst for the v8s next weekend starting out from nambour then back again. Just did an oil change so was just planning on poping a few spare litres of coolant in a bottle and heading off (brake pads etc are all good).

You are so lucky being able to take the Soarer.

I just got back from the South Island over here, I drove from Dunedin to Oamaru (about 120km) then from Oamaru to Queenstown (about 400km), then Queenstown back to Dunedin (another 400km) - in a 1993 Ford Telstar 1.3. Honestly worst drive I've ever had - steering wandered (should probably have failed its WOF), totally inapproprate car for a trip involving some very steep windy mountain roads (down to 2nd gear a LOT! Oh and the gearbox was pretty bad too, got very sticky as it got hot) very uncomfortable seat, stinking of dog and full of doghair etc. (hey, it was free so I shouldn't complain too much!) - never been so tired after a drive as when we got back to Dunedin on Tuesday afternoon.

All I could think the whole way was "wow, I would really be enjoying this trip if I was in the Soarer" - the car took so much concentration to drive I missed most of the wonderful scenery.

The plus was that when I got back to Auckland and drove the Soarer back to Hamilton (110km) it felt like a bloody formula 1 car! And after being away for a week in a dog mobile, I noticed how nice my car smelled inside too.

aw Matt, definitely a case of how not to do it! You have my sympathies.

I remember doing Auckland-Queenstown round trip three years ago in the Soarer, drove 4200km in 9 days, and never ached at all the whole time, the car was such a pleasure to drive.

2200km? Pfff! Hardly a challenge. These cars eat up long miles. I've done Darwin and back a couple of times (4000+km each way).

Take clothes, toiletries and money for beer for yourself. Car wont need anything but fuel. It isn't like you are crossing the desert.

Agreed. Going the Pacify, erm, Pacific Hwy will drive you nuts. It seems every 10 minutes you are doing 60/50/40 Kph or passing a speed camera at 20kph below the limit because the clown 3 cars up thinks he will get booked if he is too close to the limit. And don't get me started on the random long stretches of 80kph zones near Coffs Harbour.

Yep. New England is a better drive and less Highway Patrol to worry about.

Might see you at the race, Paul. Im camping at Sulman Park from Thursday. If you've never been: prepare for 35+ degree days and 0 degree nights. They actually had snow up there last week I heard.

Agree.
I did 1800kms the other week (probably several hundred of which on dodgy gravel roads with massive pot holes and another several hundred skimming over tree branches) and didnt have to worry about a thing.
If you are town hopping (for fuel) just make sure you have a phone and "sheil be roight!"

Myself and a mate occasionaly buy cars interstate of ebay and bring them back to Adelaide. He jumps on a plane armed with a gps, a raa plus card and cash for fuel and drives the car straight through to Adelaide. He still reckons that apart from no radio due to a dead emv and the 108kmh cruise cut out that the doggy old 200 000 km uzz31 he drove back from Sydney for me was one of the nicest most comfortable drives he had and it did not miss a beat all the way. Just so long as you check the obvious (fluids belts hoses etc) you should be fine

Yeah I remember those on the way to Coffs from Sydney. There were bits where from 110km/h or so traffic came down to a grinding halt for about 15 or 20 minutes because of roadworks...

Soarers are fantastic on long journeys.

I just did a 1,000k round trip to Adelaide in my UZZ30, and it was the most comfortable trip I have had for a long time. Climate control on all the time, averaged 9.7ks/per litre.
I just checked fluids, tyre pressures before I went, and each day just threw the bonnet up for a quick look, and alls great.

Beats my BA Marlin ute for comfort hands down.

We've just done a 2500km round trip to Perth (left it at the airport to go to Tasmania for a holiday) and it was a fabulous drive. We took a good spare wheel, oil, water (about 10l), some spares (belts etc) and one of those puncture repairs in a can.

The only disappointment was the fuel economy, we used mostly 98 but only managed 10l/100km overall, some sections rather worse than that. Considering we have the 3.0 n/a, it's not good, and there was a lot of carbon on the rear bumper when I washed the car.

Ive just got back from a 10500Kms round trip.... Melbourne, perth, melbourne. Pity it wasnt in the Soarer.

On the way back all I could think about was how I could have been so much more comfortable it would have been, but then again I was in thr 4x4 so I got to drive on the beach, and Diesel was much cheaper. And the AC works in the 4x4..

You win some, you loose some. Next time.

I know what you mean, Shaun. We're about to leave for the East and have to go in the 4WD to tow trailer and fill up the back/back seats with stuff. The Rexton has dual a/c but it works a lot better in the Soarer! We "bit the bullet" last month and took the Soarer from Exmouth to Perth and back, and it was so much better than the 4WD. We needed to take the 4WD really as it's a lease car (nominated kms), but it was fun in the Soarer anyway. You're right about the cost of fuel, 98 octane is so expensive, especially in the bush.
