Gday all. I am just chasing some advice. I want to get my intake manifold and fuel rails chromed. Does anyone know anything about it? Where is a good place to get it done in QLD? Cheers Mick

You're going to have to polish them first or the chrome looks crap. Cheaper then to just clear powdercoat the polished finish.

Yeah and then you don't even have to polish it.

| Red is not too bad, I did it to one of my old soarers.
I shall be just cleaning my current one and respraying the cam covers silver. |

I agree with Miles, polishing then clear-coating would be better. You don't just chrome onto alloy, or they'll form an alloy (or corrode the alloy faster). For iron/steel, you have to plate with copper then nickel before the chromium. I believe there's another metal required under the copper to plate aluminium. Mike- that engine looks sweet!

X 2 for powdercoating. I powdercoated a set of wheels a while ago, they were silver and a little scuffed, came back a brilliant white and in top condition. Chrome is old school now anyways... BOOOO ! Google some powdercoating places in your location and you can usually see the colours they offer and finishes also (smooth, gloss, matt or "riply") *hmmm cant spell that last one too well haha

There's nothing wrong with chrome; it can easily be done over aluminium and it looks better than polished aluminium. There are various other cheaper plates you can use than chrome, like just leaving it at nickel. There's another called Ni-Co which is good looking too. On the other hand there are some trick looking powdercoats - candy, metallics, all kinds of cool stuff. And they are somewhat cheaper than electroplating. Always grill your powdercoater if having alloy wheels done. There are reports of the higher temperatures required for some powders softening the alloys.

why not electro-polish it. only problem is you have to polish it first other wise it looks crap but you will be able to brush your teeth in it lol.

i never thought of clear powdercoating i wish i had all my alloy done lol so hard to keep clean and shiny. ill have to do that when i get the 2j i think chroming things like the p/s reservoir looks alright but i like the look of polished alloy everywhere else.

Good quality clear powder seems to be clearer than spraying clear coat on. Clear coat always seems to yellow it a bit and lose some of the shine. I'm buying a powdercoat setup so hopefully soon I'll have some decent samples to show.
