are there any strange regulatuions in SA for registering Soarers that are different to the rest of the country. I recently sold my beloved Soarer after 8 years faithful service and it has gone to live in Adelaide. The new owner has contacted me and said the car has to have it's factory tinting removed (it's a Limited) and the compliance plate that was fitted back in 2000 when it arrived in Aus, has to be removed and the numbers stamped into the chassis before he can transfer the rego from NSW to SA . Who in their right mind would remove factory tinting and stuff up a perfect car? Any advice I can pass on to the new owner from fellow South Aussues would be appreciated

My UZZ31 came from NSW, and I removed the tint, as I didnt like it, and I dont think it would have passed. No other problems, as mine was standard anyway. The main issues from interstate are lowered suspension, engine mods, noisy exhausts, non standard steering wheels, and any unroadworthy issues. And that said, it all depends on the inspector as well Oh, and you cant transfer regos, you have to re register it in SA.

I remember reading that SA will not allow tinting on the front door windows, or the windscreen. However, I also understood that all the states were supposed to come into line and have the same vehicle requirements across the board. By the way, NSW also considers all other state registered cars as unregistered, yet will not give you new rego until you hand in your old plates. Stupid, arrogant, piece of state. Neither will it accept the GVM printed on your rego papers from other states. I had to do the entire blue, pink, green slip, weighbridge, and proof of purchase thing when I returned from NT, even though the car was previously registered by this pathetic NSW governing body.

SA only allows 75% tint on front door windows. Factory tint is fully legal. The compliance plate does NOT have to be removed, in fact it's probably a bad thing if it is removed. The VIN does need to be stamped however, some (most?) crash shops will be able to do it fairly cheaply.

okay I have had a heap of dealings with the drop kicks out at regency park with interstate transfers and written off vehicle re rego's. In regards to a soarer 1 If it is a early import that had the vin number on a seperate plate (not the compliance or import plate) that plate must be removed and the vin number stamped on a non removable part of the body. 2 factory tint is fine but any stick on film on the front windows or windscreen must be removed unless the side windows have no factory tinting (which rules out everything made since the 1970's) They will check seat belts lights and tyres and that should be it. However if the engine is dirty at all or it has anything obvious hanging off it or it has big wheels or a loud exhaust or a sports steering wheel or jupiter is not in line with mars or the inspector didn't get laid last night and is in a pissy mood then they may pull it in for a full roadworthy. If that happens all you can do is say yes sir I will get everything on the list fixed and come back for a re inspection as soon as I can. ( that has happened to me twice!) The last soarer I took through from nsw was dead stock and I was there for 10 minutes (I had already stamped in the vin) the 1 prior to that I had to pull the vin plate and tint. Oh another trick for young players if it has a dvd player fitted the screen must turn off when the car is driving unless it is in the back seat otherwise it wont pass ( A mate had to pull the dvd player out of his tl magna to get it registered)

Wow, with a climate like Australia's you would think they would encourage SOME tinting, since it usually also offers extra UV protection! Someone should take the ecology line that works so well these days "it keeps the car cooler so I don't have to waste so much energy running the aircon all the time - so I'm saving the planet blah blah, the government are being eco-terrorists by banning it blah blah..."

You've got to wonder about all the bullsh*t that goes into some of the regulations we face. What the hell does it matter if a car has tint if it still has perfect visibility. To be honest I never even noticed that the windows were tinted at all, but if the car was built that way, and imported that way, and originally complied that way, what the hell is going on now that the car is just changing States in it's original condition

The latest law I have found says 75% light transmittance for front side windows and 35% behind the driver. What is your reference please, Christian?

Well my friend just got his car tinted and said the bloke there said they brought in a new law along with those other stupid laws such as no driving with dogs on your laps and no foggies to be on during the day.

I had a further look and it appears that any car with factory tint which meets ADRs is legal in any State (ADRs). SA, however, does not permit after-market tinting of front side doors (news report). If this is verifiable, it means that the SA owner of Gary's car should not have to remove factory tint but that Christian's after-market tinter is also right about his business.

trust me any car that has gone to regency park in the last 12 months for any reason regardless of how old the aftermarket tint is will lose the tint on the front windows or cop a defect

I got my transported from NSW, had the police visual inspection done so I could register it.. All windows are tinted, including the visor strip on the front at the top (about 200mm along top of windscreen). I haven't any issues to report to date, but looking at all the comments above, it's only a matter of time! How long have you got to take the tint off and does it also incur a penalty (fine)?

Thanks for all the input guys. I have passed this thread onto the new owner and also recommended he contact Brett (hope this is OK Brett). I feel bad that the car is a problem for the new owner as I had no idea these things would be an issue in SA when it is virtually bog stock.

NZ rules are just as bad. Over here you can't touch a cellphone while driving unless it is fixed in a mounting system. You may use a handsfree kit to access an unmounted cell phone however. Thats not the stupid bit, here it comes... You can however do whatever the hell you want with your GPS or MP3 player... But if your phone is also a GPS or MP3 player, you may not touch it under any circumstances. So you cannot use your Iphone as either a GPS or MP3 player unless it is mounted, but your IPod touch is just fine in your hand. Someone really spent some time thinking that one through!

Not that i'm a fan of Regency but that seems perfectly logical to me, sunnies come off at night and do not present a safety issue when police are approaching a suspicious car. |

We're talking about a car with normal Soarer Limited tinting, not a Soprano mobile. This is really rediculous. I would love to get sun cancer sitting in the car and then go back and sue them just for the point of it - bunch of wankers with nothing better to do - Australia - typical Police country with over-regulation in areas that don't need it. I have travelled overseas where Cops have directed me the wrong way up one way streets to get out of traffic jams, and where parking on the footpath makes sense because there isn't enough room on the road - try and do that in Australia and you will have some bonehead with a clipboard in his hand leaping over tall buildings to give you a ticket.

I have to say that parking on the footpath really does get my goat up, having lived on a street with a home for the disabled on it, and having to watch them constantly try to get around cars parked on footpaths in their wheelchairs, often having to resort to taking their chair on the road to get around it. Then later on in life, trying to navigate a baby buggy around cars parked on footpaths.

Guys, I just brought my v8 limited from Melbourne a week ago, it has factory tint, The more I read these threads over here with the different opinions, the more I am worried about showing the next day at the vehicle inspection. Any of the Adelaide people would be willing to donate 10 minutes of their time to look at my vehicle and advise me if they think I have any thing to worry about as far as re-registering with SA. I am willing to come and meet you any time anywhere, just email me, of-course, would be nice if I can get peter to look at it.

Oki, if it's just factory tint then you have no problems. Also SA just relaxed the requirement for the front side windows from 75% to 35% to be in line with the other states. You will need to get the VIN stamped into the metal as they don't accept the normal rivetted VIN plate for obvious reasons. Some panel beaters can do it for you, saves you having to wait twice when you go for the vehicle ID check. Apart from that it should be easy, and take it on the cruise this weekend for more opinions.

Thanks peter I need to re-gas or order new boot struts, do you think they can pick on that, or I can go ahead and get the inspection done, and leave the boot struts for later. Also, regarding the cruise this weekend, can I get that thread link or information about exactly when and where, the link I saw yesterday was on the 25th of April meeting at uni-park and cruising to Morialta for barbeque/drinks, is there a different cruise happening this weekend?

in theory as long as all the lights work it has good tyres that are not mega wide has the import vin stamped on to the body the seat belts are not freyed and the engine is clean it should go through no worries. I took a nsw rego au fairlane through last month and was in and out in ten minutes. Window tint is still a grey area if they dont like it they may make you pull it off. Also make sure the car is registered or on a permit and you have a current drivers licence on you as they will check

Brett, the tint shouldnt pose a problem, as they "should" have a tint meter. Trans SA in Mt Gambier have one. But we are talking about a Government department

Guys, passed my vehicle identity check yesterday, no problems. only annoyance was he took my flare which was clipped near under the glove box. It was this red little tube. I feel like an idiot for leaving it there, I saw it there when I got the car, but never guessed what it was or bothered to check it. He told me that the car being an import, it came with it, but that he confiscated it because according to him it is illegal hazard in SA, Did I have any right to ask him to give it back and that I will remove it from the car, or you think he took it for himself.
