Hi guys,

I'm curious, can you cut the rear well of a car, say make it 1/2 the depth if I took it to a professional engineering shop to cut out and re-weld it to the required specifications, obviously it would mean a narrower tire would have to be fitted and take up some boot space and the battery would have to sit higher. But the question is can it be done and certified, along with being WOF passable? Or is this also a structural thing you cant touch?

The reason is to make space for a custom rear dual exhaust setup. Unfortunately there just is not enough room.

Let me know. Cheers

Probably of no help, but have you considered getting a panel shop to 'pull' a portion of it up, the same they would if it was in an accident only in reverse rather than a 'cut and shut'. Then maybe fit a flat steel plate on the inside to give a nice surface for the tyre to sit on.

That could work on one side, but the other side would need to be cut for sure.

I have seen some people cut through their spare tire wells before.. like for example diehard MR2 enthusiasts, they make these crazy intercooler setups by cutting through the floor of the tire well to scoop up air as the car drives along.

I remember someone selling an exhaust on here about a year ago that exited out the middle of the car, he cut the tyre well out and re welded it back together. I think it might have been on a track car though.

There is nothing structural in the well, I made a 8mm checker plate infil and bolted it in with urathane to seal it up.

Ah well I might pop around to my local panel and paint man see what he thinks................

The reason for this is so I can run these large rear mufflers on the back keeping a true dual setup. sticking with 2.5 stainless tube, a pair of stainless resonators in the middle and up to some custom headers. Once of course the 1UZFE goes in.

Then it will sound like that!

How accurate is the recording compared with real life?

Fairly similar for the high end sounds, accept in real life it had a really good low frequency rumble.

Wish I had some more clips....

Haha one star, oh the envy.

Mike,

Andrew and I have cut the entire floor out of our cars. As Andrew pointed out to me, it is boxed in by the 4 huge steel sections.

I Would use a jigsaw and steel blade to cut around the circumference (removing the desired thickness) and then weld the bottom back on. Some flaring might be needed to match them up. Once it is welded sanded and painted it will look as neat as factory to any one looking inside. Especially so with judicial use of sound deadening before painting.

Good to hear Ben.

Thats pretty much how I was thinking of having it done.

I will take it to my panel and paint guys see what they can do as well as make up some kind of mounting points.

Cheers!
