Not sure if anyone has done this yet or not but I am planning on modifying the glovebox to become a chiller for drinks etc, these days its cheaper to buy 3 bottles of water than 1 but then you just end up with 2 hot bottles of water floating around your car. If anyone is interested I can take a few photos as I do it, It should be very simple and take less than an hour.

Are you doing the glove box or the front seat arm rest?

I am doing the glovebox as it has a bit more space and fits a couple of drinks in there.

What an awesome idea! There's peltier devices you can get which can bring temperatures way below ambient. Most portable coolers run on these. When powered one side of the peltier element gets very cold and the other side gets very hot. The problem there is where are you going to vent the hot air?

The idea is very simple and should bring glove box temps down under 10deg (depending on outside heat). I will hopefully start on it tomorrow.

Go to supercheap and buy a little car fridge for $59 and stick it the boot or in one of the back seat footwells and you're done.

I have used the car fridges before and they don't do much but heat the car up. This will cost less than 10 Dollars and should do a better job.

Mmm I would be intrigued to see what you come up with Rob. The other day I had a warm bottle of water in the car and I thought wow, it would be great to have a cooler!

I know some of the older model Statesmans had a cooler section in the glovebox. Might be something from a Holden wrecker that you can use on the Soarer

Wouldn't want to pull over and look through the boot every time you wanted a drink would you? Very convenient in the glove box. As for your gloves, couldn't they go in the mid compartment between the driver and passenger seats? How about in the door?

the only flaw i can see is you'll need to insulate the glove box some how to make sure the it keeps in the cold other wise when it sits over night for 12 hours or so its just going to get warm again, then you drive for 15 mins in the morning and go "hey i feel like my cold water" it'll still be warm

The Xtrail has chilled drink holders which I must say are great. They achieved this by a small vent from the AC vent below it: It wont freeze water but it keeps cold drinks cold, and will cool warm ones. The reverse is true in winter as the air that is bled off is warm. Maybe something like that would work Rob? The AC system is pretty close to the glove box, so any piping would be short.

Yeah, thats exactly what I will be doing. The AC ducting that goes to the passenger vent runs directly under the glovebox, so it is very simple to run a small flexi hose from the ducting to the glovebox. As long as your Aircon is working you should be able to get the drinks under 10 degrees. I still haven't had the chance to do it yet but I will measure temps before and after so I can measure how successful it is. The only real downside is if your heater is on the glovebox will be heated also but it will be pretty easy to just block the vent.

That was the point, you could have it at -6C and it was still liquid - fantastic! |
