guys, I am new here, and I am hoping to become a happy proud owner of a Soarer,
first, I admit, I get carried away emotionally.
I am in adelaide, yet, I bid for a car in the gold coast, now must fly and drive back here, holy cow, 2000 kilometers.

can I get advice about the listing in general and if anything looks suspicious,

http://cgi.ebay.com.au/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=130374454613&ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT

please look at engine picture ,and note the rust/ leakage under the radiator cap,

on the listing the vin had the wrong 77 instead of JJ found out after asking seller.

I am paying in cash and will do a vcheck tomorrow.

any advice regarding the whole listing, and things I should watch out.

should I expect any complications in regard to transfer from Queensland to Adelaide, paperwork, slips, etc..

so far, seller appears to be o.k. and cooperative.

but I don't want to fly all that distance to end up with a whole lot of regrets.

advice from all my fellow Soarer owners is highly appreciated.

thank you

I bought my last Soarer from the Gold Coast, great cruise driving it back. You really should get it checked first, preferably by the Qld equivalent of the RAA or anyone that knows Soarers and will go to the trouble of checking fluid levels and fluid quality, eg how does the P/S fluid look etc.

I have bought a few cars of ebay interstate and driven back. A v check is a must a couple of mates of mine have had cars reposesed by finance companies after they bought them. One had wrecked the car by them and apparently the look on the repo guys face when handed a door which was all that was left was priceless .
As peter said take it to someone to get looked over and check all the levels before you leave as well as at fuel stops (I am a mechanic so I do all that myself)
Also if you don't have it already upgrade to raa plus before you leave so if something does go wrong it will help with most of the large expenses while you are getting it fixed (towing in non cbd areas can be obscene) plus a motel room etc

i hope you got more details than were in that advert, as its got no details, interior pics, closeups of damage etc.

there was recently a thread about a guy who got stung buying a car unseen, so be carefull, you do not have to go through with the sale if the product is not as described through ebay.

IF... it turns out ok, and you buy it (for 4k it seems good), then take it to a mechanic (or take some spanners and park it on a tall gutter) and do an oil change and coolant change for the trip.

I queried the seller regarding picture 3 ( engine picture) in which leakage /rust spillage at radiator cap.

this is what I got in response,

" There's definitely no problems with the engine or the cooling system, those marks are just where we checked the water level it will wash of.The interior is all in good condition"

can someone look at picture 3 in the listing posted above and tell me if the leakage might be only a case of opening the cap when engine was hot and nothing more.

Peter
I am leaning towards your advice about getting the car inspected, do you recommend this site to carry out the inspection and which inspection level ( master check, mechanical check , table of prices at the lower part of the page).

http://www.racq.com.au/motoring_advice/buying__and__selling_cars/vehicle_inspections

Peter , Brett,
from your previous driving trips, can you suggest driving plan, how many stops, ( e.g. start at gold coast, have a stop in Sydney, another one in Melbourne, I know it all depends on the driver, but what's a practical reasonable stopovers plan would be)

Marc
(for 4K it seems good), though, by adding the vcheck report, the car inspection, petrol, flying in, minor service, oil change, coolant, will probably make it 5k at the end.

last thing, the car still has rego until August,
can I keep the qld plates and drive over, or will I need to go the rego and do anything.

Guys, thank you so much for helping,

don't forget to look at the engine picture and tell me what you think about the radiator cap leakage.

cheers

If the engine has the correct coolant in it, it wont have any rust marks after taking the cap off.

As Brett says, take out RAA Plus, I hope you dont need it though.

And welcome to the Soarer community.

if the cooling system was serviced correctly and had the correct ammount of coolant etc in it, then you would expect a white calcium type residue from spillages.

If the cooling system hasnt been serviced and the coolant % is low and has been for quite a while then the water will be a orangy colour due to corrosion in the cooling system. And that is what you see on the radiator so id say the cooling system is in need of a flush and replacement :-)

As far as bringing it into SA & changing the rego over , we did this recently. You can drive home on the Qld rego (make sure it's current, and get the signed transfer papers etc). You will have to take it to Regency Pk for an identity check before you can transfer the reg to SA - this is a different place to the Regency Pk "pits" and their job is to check engine numbers, Vin etc and make sure the car isn't stolen or written off. They aren't doing a roadworthy check, but I believe that if they see anything obviously wrong with it they will send you to the "pits" for a roadworthy. You don't want this to happen, so make sure it is clean & tidy, has good tyres, not too loud etc. They made us get the VIN number stamped into the body of the car - it was only on the import compliance plate. There is a mechanic opposite the ID check place who will do this, but they charge $50 for a 5 minute job. If the number isn't already stamped on the body, and you know someone with some letter punches, get it done beforehand. Once the ID check has been done, you can go to a rego office & register it in SA in your name. At this stage you have to pay for the rego, stamp duty, number plates & the ID inspection fee. You can then hand the QLD plates into the SA rego office, get a receipt for them, then send the receipt & a cancellation form back to Qld rego office & get a refund. Our car came from Vic, and it took about 4 weeks to get the refund.
Driving back from the Gold Coast should take around 2 days if you take a direct route through the back of NSW - either through broken Hill or West Wyalong. Going via Sydney & melbourne will be a lot longer.

There is also a id inspection station at lonsdale . Be warned make sure the car is registered and you have a current drivers licence with you as they will triple check all the paperwork. The last time I was there a blokes drivers licence had expired 2 days previous and he was hit with a nice fine for his trouble.
Also make sure you insure the car before you leave and confirm that the car has bodilly injury cover as nsw does not have the cover incorperated in the rego like sa I am not sure about queensland.
Basically as a driving plan, set home on the gps stop as often as you need for fuel etc and if you start to feel tired take a break as soon as you can and don't drive late at night if you want to avoid the wildlife

We came back inland rather than the cost. Set the GPS a few stops ahead only, as when we tried to set it for a longer distance it tried to send us down the coastal route - longer and more congested.

We just drove until about 9:00pm then looked for a motel, probably not a good plan, but we got away with it. We did about 2 hour stints to avoid getting over tired.

what peter had said;

is the only way to travel that distance.
If you don't want to contend with a heap of trucks then do not travel between 10.00pm and 6.00 am
Alot of freight is being transported as express freight to be there the next morning.
If you start to slow up an express freight truck you could be asking for some sort of abuse.
you can do what you want but i am just giving some friendly advise (travel during daylight hours)

My old man got the RACQ to check out his Trans Am before he bought it. He was very happy with the service. I think it was $350. Very thorough.

When I was a younger fella I drove to Brisbane from Melbourne only stopping 3 times for petrol and burgers. That's a hard drive. I wouldn't recommend it.

I'd have to agree with Lew as well. the old man and i drove from brisbane to sydney during the australia day long w/end last year, left about 7pm and got to sydney at about 7am, drove non-stop and changed drivers every few hours. It was basically just us and almost every truck in australia it seemed, and they don't slow down or stop for anything, basically they own the roads. so yeah, i'd suggest driving during the day and getting a room at night.

Guys

1-does the RAA Plus cover me interstate, If I run into trouble with the car in Qld, NSW or victoria.

2-If I join today, Am I covered instantly or there is a waiting period.

3-when I join, should I tell them, I am joining because I going to get my purchased second hand car from interstate and I am worried about breaking down, or is better not say much and just join.

ooh, one last thing, the seller keeps assuring me the car is in good condition and that he just got it inspected 3 weeks ago with roadworthy certificate, so far he seems to be genuine and decent bloke with good feedback on ebay, he even offered to pick me from the airport, should I take a chance and trust him, ( don't feel like paying 350 dollars for an RACQ inspection and rather keep it to spend on RAA, petrol, and service for the car.

would you pay 350 dollar for inspecting a 4000 car 10% of the value or would you take a chance and provided that the car looks and sounds alright when I see it. ( I am not a mechanic or expert with cars)

thanks

More complications

I did a premium vcheck on the vehicle and it came up with 2 financial encumbrances recorded by G2 finance against the vehicle.

I been on the phone with
www.checkitout.com.au
they are listed on www.transport.qld.gov.au as vcheck providers.

I have been on the phone with fair trading, they toss me from one operator to another, second lady tried talking me into paying another 12.5 dollars for another check saying she never heard of www.checkitout.com.au

and if go through her check, It would be more guaranteed.

A lot of lecturing from the consultants that me paying 50 dollars to get inaccurate and outdated information from government computer systems doesn't really protect me or guarantee anything and that the finance company can just come and get the car if I buy it. and how veta auto works different from checkitout to a list of other providers depending when and who update their system and piece of the puzzle.

government rips my money for bad unreliable information.

I rang G2 finance explaining the situation, he claims they repossessed the vehicle a while ago from a non paying customer , but since have sold the car to a dealer and that this information shouldn't be there and he doesn't know why it is there, he said he will remove it from his system,
I asked him if he could do me a personal favor and send me a note to email to that effect ( i.e. G2 finance doesn't have anything against the car)
he said no worry, wrote my email, been over an hour, didn't receive that promised email yet.

I spoke again with a friendly lady at fair trading qld, told her my finding, she took my mobile no, said will check tomorrow , see if system updates/ reflects differently and get back to me.

I also asked the seller if he knows anything about that and asked him to send his email so i can send him the vcheck/REVS pdf to look at.

not very happy about all the complications, not just have to worry if I am buying a lemon, but also if there are legal issues with the whole damn ebay bid.

advice anyone

Oki, as far as the RAA goes, the minute you join you are covered. You do not need to tell them that you're driving a vehicle back from QLD and yes you are covered nationally. Howver, having said all that, are you sure you can't find a nice one here in SA for similar money?

Here's one. Slightly more $'s but by the time you have all these checks done, fly to QLD, pay for fuel/accom/food etc to drive it back you're not far off.

unless you can get a certified clear title without encumberances you do not want to touch that car with a 10 foot pole.
I have seen a few people have cars they have recently bought repossesed without a legal leg to stand on. 1 was even from a car yard, bought the car, yard went bust 3 days later and next thing he knew a tow truck was picking up his 10k commodore.
Bottom line no clear title do not waste your time as the risk of loosing every cent you spend on it is too big

So you know nothing about cars, and you want to save a lousy $350 which would tell you if the car needs thousands of dollars of repairs, for a car you bought interstate on ebay.

Either you're not really serious about going through with buying the car or you're not the sharpest tool in the shed huh.

Guys,

you are quite right, that's too much trouble and headache to persist with this just because it is a good bargain (4000 for soarer), I think I will email saying that I am not interested as there is too much headache involved.

I am worried he will turn things around and accuse me of being a non paying bidder.

He put the wrong VIN on the listing, not enough pictures, description and didn't tell me about the financial encumbrances.

Anyway, it wasn't like I stopped others from winning the bid, the nearest bidder was 3001 which is 1000 less than his reserve price of 4000.

I've wasted $50 already not to mention time and energy, and not prepared to waste all my money on an unsafe venture.

Guys, that's the best thing about forums is that people help others by advice and information.

thanks to all who took the time to contribute to that thread.

I wish everybody the best for the great and valuable information.

$50 and time and energy is nothing compared to $4000 plus a lot more money, time and energy. Best to get out now, while the ball is in your court.
That being, that is he cracks it and complains you are a non paying bidder, as far as you have said, the item is not as described, ie. "conveniently wrong VIN number", lack of financial encumbrance information.
Be best to cancel the auction before the encumbrance issue is actually sorted out :-)
