Hi,

I did a search for melbourne soarer mechanics found some old threads and people mentioning Neil.. don't know last name.

Can anyone recommend a good soarer mechanic in melbourne. I will be wanting him to inspect a soarer before I purchase it.

While I am at it, if I do choose to get an imported one from a dealer(so it will be unregistered).. will I need to register the car in VIC then drive it back to Sydney, then re-register in NSW, and lose some money in the process?

theres an import place call "sport and luxury cars" i think thats their name in melb that i hear people talking about.
rather expensive for work from memory by reading threads, but apparently they know their soarers.

I try to do 99% of work on my car, only when I'm really stuffed do I take it to Sports And Luxury. I think they're pretty good, I think the main mechanic there is Doug, top bloke and very nice. I always thought they were very honest in the professional sense, and their labour rates were fairly reasonable. I think it was 60 an hour.

They're in Ferntree Gully.

+1 to Doug at SLC. Their labor rates are something like $90 per hour now, but they will not stuff you around in any way.

why not just buy one from NSW to save the dramas? there is of them for sale in carsales.com.au. stuff the dealers they rip you off.

but if you are in NSW and get it from VIC, you need to get a blue slip they will tell you if anything is wrong with it.

blue slip guys seem to go over it more.Well up here they do. Blue slips on Imported cars are more exspensive to. $100 i paid 6 years ago

So I have to get the blue slip out of my own money and effort prior to purchasing from the dealer in Melbourne?

Tom, in order to register it in NSW you will have to get a Blue Slip from an official RTA AUVIS station. All interstate vehicles require a Blue Slip.

The car doesn't need to have a valid rego from VIC, as that will become defunct. Refer to here for more information:
http://www.rta.nsw.gov.au/registration/getnewrego/interstatevehicles.html

I purchased my Soarer from an importer in VIC so I'm well aware of what's needed to register an interstate car :-)

I guess the question here is how are you getting it transferred to NSW? Do you plan on traveling down to VIC and then driving it back to NSW?

A blue slip from an Authorised Unregistered Vehicle Inspection Station (AUVIS).

Did you get the blue slip inspection from a NSW Station? Haydn says I need a blue slip to but he is saying I should get that while in Melbourne as part of my "Check" of the car.

There's no point getting any sort of check done in Melbourne, as it would become invalid in NSW as part of the registration process. It's only once you wish to register the car in NSW that you'll need a blue slip. So essentially, it doesn't matter if the car has valid registration or not. You still go through the same procedure when you register it as NSW vehicle, i.e. you will need a blue slip, green slip, proof of purchase, etc.

If you plan to drive from VIC to NSW, and the car is unregistered, just obtain a temporary permit from VICRoads. They last 28 days, but they may put a limitation where you can't drive the car from 7PM to 7AM. You may also want to stipulate that you'd like to travel interstate with the vehicle. I'll try to find the official link from VICRoads for you.

If the car does have current registration, then you can just drive it to NSW. No need to get any sort of check.

Is the vehicle you're buying a freshly imported car Tom?

Here you go - link to official VICRoads site with information on obtaining a temporary permit:
