i dont think its about creating a storm in a tea cup or about having some type of rant on 'political correctness' (which you may prefer to think of as communication which is sensitive to the readers of a public forum, and may come from a variety of cultural backrounds)..its just that basically the opening statements and posts were seriously misguided, but worse they would be offensive to members or future members of african origin. it may as well read 'hey anyone noticed any blacks/darkies or n!ggers driving our precious soarers around these days...you know the ones that come over here and steal our social welfare money'..thats the implication. the other part to my objection is that a member here was banned, albeit for a small period of time for having a go at 'yanks'.

man.. having that much money.. youd think they would aim a little higher than soarers.. Stomps Edit- just to add to the x-cultural who drives soarers debate.. i got gated by some ranga in a white jzz30 when i was walking my dog yesterday... i raised my hand up and yelled yeah.. the dude thought i was yelling at him and turned around trying to be hard.. he pulled up along side and said something along the lines of "whadafukizyaproblemkarnt" i had a giggle and told him it was a nice gating.. give it some more...and that his car looked mad.. to which he replied "oh,thoughtyawerestartinsht....urasikkarnt" then drove towards the round about, clutch kicked and gated down the road again.. little ranga could drive... shame about his original tryhard toughguy attiture.. but still.. nice z30.. halfcage, buckets, nice rims, low... very low.., plenty of power.. and glorious gate.. not too relevant.. but figured it was a good way to discriminate against rangas too Stomps

Really? I, and I imagine most of the other older guys on this forum earn a lot more than that, even after taxes. Soon disappears when you have a family though, so I stick with the Soarer as it owes me nothing and doesn't cost much to maintain. Guess you have different priorities when you are young and single. I don't really understand the rest of your post (must be the age thing again I expect!) |

Matt-I also earn more than that and am neither very young nor single... I meant Jay-z and co... Not 56k.. I'm pretty sure if I earned around 40mil per year I wouldn't be driving a soarer... I know what you mean about money going quickly though.. I may actually have to sell my race car as soon as it's finished.. While I don't (and have 0 intention to) have kids.. I do have a mortgage and am looking to buy an investment property before the market goes spastic again...

Sorry, in the U.S, they were selling for $35000+. If they were to be released in Aus they were going to sell them for $95000+. The LS400 was a few thousand cheaper. That was 19 years ago so it wasn't exactly a cheap car and nor should it be as it was competing with the Mercedes 300CE.

Actually planet soarer lists the uzz32 at 7.45 million yen which with todays exchange rate is $80000 U.S. Don't know what the exchange rate was back then but the point still stands, it was not a cheap car.

You are correct Boris in relation to the LS400. Here's an old Autospeed article on the LS400 that states it was sold for $105,000...about half way down the page http://autospeed.com/cms/title_The-Lexus-LS400/A_111223/article.html This old NRMA article has it listed as $118,206: https://www.mynrma.com.au/cps/rde/xchg/mynrma/hs.xsl/lexus_ls400_1990_car_review.htm The 1990 model also grabbed the world car of the year award in its class in 1990 There's also a little background info on these beauties, so both articles are worth the read. The Celsior was a tad better appointed at this stage with the air susp, massage seats etc etc. As far as the Soarers go, here's an article that mentions a $150,000 new purchase & import price at that stage (see buyers guide section) http://autospeed.com/cms/A_0062/printArticle.html This 2005 autospeed article states "When Soarers first appeared in Australia during the mid ‘90s, they typically sold for over AUD$100,000. http://autospeed.co.nz/cms/title_Step-into-a-Soarer/A_2648/article.html Considering this info came from Sports and Luxury Cars in Melb, I think it would be reasonably accurate. Either way, Celsior, LS400 or Soarer, we do get fantastic bang for buck with these vehicles.

It is simple, and does not depend on mere conversions from Yen or US$. Manufacturers keep constant price relativities for their existing model ranges, introducing a new model when they want a new price point in comparison with their competitors. The LS400 is today the LS460, priced over $190,000. The Soarer (SC400) is today the SC430 or SC460, priced over $165,000. Look up their prices on carsales or drive. That shows the relative price point at which the Soarer would have been placed had they released the 3-series (UZZ30/SC400) here rather than waiting for the 4-series (UZZ40/SC430). Match up the current SC430 to similarly priced cars today, check the prices of those same comparable cars in the 1990s and there is your price for the UZZ30 had it been released. The UZZ31 and UZZ32 would have cost more, the latter probably $200,000+ in today's market. Edit: I predict that the $100-$120k figures quoted by Mark for the early 90s LS400 will match up to corresponding (same period) new prices for the same German cars with which the LS430 competes today. Do the same, backwards, to find a 1990s price for today's SC430.

There are a lot of Indians that drive Soarers in Melbourne - not so many Africans from my observations. The majority of soarer owners are wogs and bogans and a few old farts on sundays that drive their SC400 that they bought for 60k 10 years ago lol. I know for a fact from being in the trade and from Indian friends that they cannot drive for sh.it, and since a soarer is a large coupe, they always use the bumpers as a measure of how close they are to their obstacle. Most Indians do not service their soarer either - they do not want to pay anything more for the car than the price they paid for it. The upside is they will bargain to get a cheaper price to buy it from you, so they can have the car for a year, thrash it around until something expensive or seemingly expensive breaks, and then they will sell a perfectly good car with a few minor fix up issues for $2-$3k. These are my factual observations so toss the political correctness aside In my opinion, the soarer is a better built car than the latest VE Commodore, and its nearly 20 years old. The later model cars have cut corners in steel, structure and design as the car industry is always getting shaken up. Toyota build cars to LAST. How many old corollas do you see on the road or 80s Toyota? Plenty. You do not see as many old Mitsubishis or Nissans on the road these days. Toyoda (the founder and owner) was a master of planning for the future and his TQM policy and management structure enabled the company to build on past experiences and triumphs so ensure that they are the market leaders in 30 years (present time now). GM and the other big autos have failed because they did not plan for the future - they reaped the benefits and squandered their profits in the 70s and 80s and did not plan for the 90s and 00s. Having worked on Skylines, Silvias and so forth, The Soarer/Supra cars are simply the best cars and engine packages you can get your hands on from an engineering and build quality perspective in a Grey market Jap import.

Keep in mind you can buy a brand new Corvette now for around US$50K which would cost well over $100K here and 20 years ago a new Corvette was just over $30K. From what I have read the US MSRP was $41000.
