Hi guys,

Do you think this flip key would work by simply removing the transponder from my existing key and putting into this one? Obviously done by a key cutter/locksmith?

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=290413937155&fromMakeTrack=true&ssPage Name=VIP:watchlink:top:en

Or do you believe that maybe the key cutters/locksmith stock stuff like this?

Thoughts?

The plastic shell on the transponder key to our IS200 broke. I purchased a new shell (with key blank) on eBay and transferred the transponder, had the key cut and all was well. You need to ensure that the format of the shell is the same as your existing one.

Does anyone know if our current key would just transfer over? Or does it require to be reprogrammed? I would love to get a nice flip key done :-)

I've looked at this before, the el cheapo way to do it is to acually saw your key to size and the flip key pary just screws in holding the key (I would weld this haha), but thats about it however when you do cut (using a hack saw make sure you don't cut it too short or you won't be able to start the car, try and get one that has a blank soarer key and maybe go get it cut

Try and get it cut into one of these bad boys.

But if you want to be the coolest kid on the block, try and get a proximity key.

If you sort this out Ken, I too wouldn't mind a flip key. Good locksmiths are all over the shop.

Statewide Locksmiths at Ringwood may have this key, they import all sorts of flip keys and shells.

Hi Ken,

Don't waste your money, I got one of these flip keys about 9months ago, I got it cut and the only way I can use it is to remove the plastic surround trim piece as the key case is to wide to get the key all the way in.

Brett, the Soarer key is longer than the common key blanks, that's what caused your problem. I'm yet to see a flip out key with a long enough blank. The situation is even worse when you consider the boot keyhole in the tail light.

The ebay item listed seems to ideal for the Soarers though. Hmm, I'd love one of these

Adam no, these keys are long enough that isn't the problem at all.

The issue is the key housing hitting the ignition cover, if you pull the cover off the key goes in all the way and can be used just fine.

Does this make is simpler for you?
The key needs another 3mm to go in to turn, it can't with the ignition cover in place.

I see what you mean now about how you have to get really close in order for the chip to respond. Damn! Would have been nice to have one of these

Ken,

Its got nothing to do with the chip, the inside of that key is empty its the key itself that won't turn unless its all the way in.

The only way I could work out how to do it (without having a supplier do a special run which would be too costly) was to buy the exact same blank that you bought Brett and then weld an additional 5-10 mm of stainless steel onto the end of the blank and machine it to match the blank profile and also dremel away some of the plastic to accommodate the extra length when flipped closed... then take it to a locksmith to be cut.
I know somebody looked at this same problem seriously a year or two ago with the idea of selling suitable/modified blanks but the project never got up.

you could just knock together a new piece to surround the ignition hole but make it wider so the key housing doesn't hit and will go all the way in.
