Do shifts kits put more strain on your transmission? and eventually cause oil leaks? thats what my mechanic said... Just wondering what stage shift kit is best to get?

I've heard the opposite. I've not much experience with them but the theory I heard is it REDUCES stress on the transmission, and should last longer as it doesn't need to "slip" as much. So maybe it reduces wear on the bands?
Shift kit from what i've heard reduces the strain on the transmission. However the quicker shifts will cause extra strain on the shafts on the drivetrain that may be what your mechanic was trying to say
Why do you want a shift kit in your commodore? Just convert to manual or are you trying to run better times at the drag strip?
If your transmission is extremely lazy, then a shift kit will not help
Reason why Commodore transmissions stuff up quickly is because most are used by retards who do skids in them, then the car quickly goes up on carsales when the transmission is beggining to let go.
Now the new buyer who services his transmission regularly to their hearts content will always have these problems that are only rectified with a rebuild.

If I had a TT auto I would defiantly be doing something about the auto. Mines a V8 so I'm not so concerned. It is a bit of a barge anyway.
Tash what model commodore? I had a shift kit in my V8 VN and it was great. I sold the car with over 350k.km on the clock with original engine and transmission, still running fine. (and not like it was babied either)
If its a later model Commodore just get it re-tuned and shift points sharpened up. We got our 02 Gen3 Statesman re-tuned, as the factory tune in these are set for luxury and the changes and power output are crap. Now it shifts much better without any mechanical mods at all, and makes a heap more power.

Thinking about putting it in a VP, little old, but still. I was going to put it my old VR but that gone now. Was thinking a mini spool too? I just wanted to get something done to it thats not too big (changing to manual) too have a little fun with. The VP lexcen was quite cheap as well. We have 6months to get all the things we want done. Need to get the road worthy first, which only needs a handbrake alignment, power window switch, had to change the mirrors to manual as they didnt work and a the brakes are real stiff as well as the power steering. but the mechanic said the rack and pump looked fine... dont know...
Mini Spool = Making yourself look like a total retard at the parking lot and shredding your tyres quickly with time. Get an LSD Diff but then again do you really need it.

But on a serious note, a shift kit is better for the Auto as its not allowing as much slip between gear changes but does heat up more, so make sure you get a trans cooler at the same time.

Be weary that you dont overcool your trans fluid. Auto transmissions are like snags; they dont want to have too much or too little of something, it has to be spot on.
