Not that I go looking for drag races, but every GTS-T that I've lined up next to since I got my Soarer has been smoked - hard. Usually most Skylines you see on the road have basic upgrades like 3" exhaust and FMIC - but in my experience mod-for-mod the Soarer will always win (even though it has the weight disadvantage)

SO anyways, my car made 195rwkw with only an exhaust, but since this power run I have fitted FMIC, BFI and eBoost on 16psi so it goes a fair bit harder than before - nothing too special but enough to dust off the average SS, WRX, Evo, GTS-T, etc

NOW, to run 16psi I made my own xena-diode fuel cut defender and have noticed on cold morning it does not work and hits overboost fuel cut anything over 14 pounds (I cant explain why... it just doesn't... then after dirving the car for 30 minutes or so it comes good!?!??!) - so a couple of minutes before I lined up this GTS-T i had noticed the Klingon message for OBFC so I had already switched the eBoost off - I was stuck on 11.5 psi instead of 16 and it was time to run!!!

Lights are red...
On the brakes and on the gas stalling up the converter...
Light goes green - off the brake and smash the throttle...
Launch hard with the tyres skittling...
Hit second gear and I can see this Skyline in the rear view mirror about 1.5 car lengths behind, catching up slowly...
By the time the auto hits third he is passing me at WALKING PACE - with what sounds like an EXTERNAL WASTEGATE screaming wide open.

Now, I dont know about you, but if I had upgraded a Skyline to the point where I needed and external gate, but could only just beat a mildly modified Soarer on 11.5 pounds, I WOULD BE PISSED!

So happy I got rid of my Skyline - even if I just got beaten!

eugh, rb20dets are easy, rb25de's (without turbo are easy), but rb25det's weigh less and put out similar power, mods cost nothing on them so they should easily take your soarer in theory.

Really I'd blame drivers and lack of maintenance on these cars.

A good skyline with a rb25det should beat a soarer in power to weight ratio. A soarer is a heavy luxury cruiser. If it was a r32 chances were it was a RB20DET 135kw at the fly stock, weighed 1300kgs+driver (9.63kgs per kw). r33 chacnes were its a rb25det 185kw stock, weighed 1400kgs+driver (7.56kgs per kw). Either way yours was just a soarer 1jz 206kw stock, weighing probably 1600kgs+driver (7.76kgs per kw). (easiest comparison because if you know what mods you've done you've increased no weight but increased the kw's, but the same number of kw on his car would be more effective as the weight also doesn't increase, also note all power figures are at the engine, not wheels, just manufacturer specs).

Either way don't get too excited. Not many buy a soarer to street race. The base platform from where you start is a very heavy beast, but each kg is a little bit of luxury. From power seats to electric folding mirrors.

Good to hear you're still impressed by your car though.

I don't think you should lower yourself to a point where you get into a straight line drag with these cars :-P We all know they can't turn that well, why play on their home turf

Aiden i can tell you that i would much pefer to be behind the wheel of a soarer in an accident then in a skyline, soarers are built solid the way cars should be built. Skylines are tin cans on wheels just close the door on one and see for yourself. the weight in soarers comes mainly from the body and not so much from lux items, ive crashed one so believe me i know, and yet ive not seen a mildly modified gts pulling 11s @ the strip

Love the way you told the story Cameron.

How much boost are you running Prashant? At 16+psi you should have no problems smashing SS's and XR8's.

Sif, the r31 felt like it was made out of a boat shell. That thing was made to take a front on impact from an iceberg. shame about the steering also being from.. a ship.

The 1JZ is more responsive and better at gaining torque (torque is what wins races) when modded with the same mods as a skyline. My good friend has an R34 GTS-T brand spanker with same mods and I still beat him by a car length. And mines a 91 + quarter of the price! Shame.

my mate had a modded 180 and beat him with the sr20. so he sold that and bought a r33 rb25det and modded that cause he thought the torque of the 6 would help him.. i changed from 17's to 19's in that time and thats all.. beat him again so he has sold the skyline haha now he wants something with a jz motor in it now haha

Cameron, with 195rwkw, how far behind were you when going head to head with LS2 Commodores (260kw VZ I Assume your talking about), or is this VE's?

Were they always in front or did they begin catching up and eventually pass you?

Should have said before - the GTS-T was R33

Boris - the one and only LS2 (VE) I have lined up had the jump on me (manual vs auto) and I just couldnt get the power down thru one wheel. Even with 275s the IJZ still overcomes the grip fairly easily. I was a 1.5 car lengths behind at end of first gear so I backed off.

I need a dumps, torsen and Haltech ASAP!

I don't race on the street but My old Soarer on many VE's on the track.
Last one I raced was putting out 340rwkw's and we both ran 12.2's, a few weeks later I ran 11's.
Here is a vid racing Jeff's Soarer, mine is the one in the left lane.

And in the right lane in this one.

Love hearing these stories hahah, agree with these comments, Soarer's are made so much better than skylines and yeah the JZ's can beat them easily.

I have beaten a couple of RB25-DET 33 Skylines in my UZZ31 with a catback and BFI and yeah 5 litres I can beat and my mates HSV 200kw I am even with.

I agree with Aiden Cheese about the R31 skylines. I use to have one. I went 65kmph sideways into an industrial curb due to some VS commy hanging his car out on a blind spot. The impact it took smashed the diff out of the car and that’s a live axle BorgWarner diff. After inspection, no chassis damage only bent links and pan hard rod and stuff diff...

The only skyline that has got near me at the drags so far was a R35, he started at 12.2 and worked down to 11.7. There are heaps of skylines up here with 350kw +, but are hopeless at the drags. By the time they finish changing gears and spinning I'm at the finish line.

Just pulled the turbos back of the soarer and ported out the wastegates from 20mm to 22.5mm each, and now im sitting at a stable .9 bar as apposed to 26 psi before lol. Just wondering how yours is.

90% of rbs are in front of a manual while 90% of soarers are auto. Hardly a fair comparison at the drags.

Just have to say with my experience with the rb25det.. They can be quite powerfull if done correctly..
My brother own's a r33gtst series two with a gt35/40 and screamer of a 50mil wastegate ..
There isn't much that can come near it on full song..
I will say though.. the manual has nothing on the auto setup on the soarer within 400m..
If it was 800m it would be a different story..
I have that very issue with my manual soarer with a single gt30/37r.. 400m it aint that quick.. Give me another 100m and I will pass you like your standing still... Don't right of the rb25det As I've seen some quick example's..

Agreed Aiden.

A mate just swapped his boat for an r34 gts with upgraded turbo exhaust etc, pretty similar mods to my car and he ran an 11.7 on slicks with a manual. One thing I like about rbs is that they really wind out.

Not slicks, but soft sticky road tires. I think 11.6 is the standard quarter time for the R35's. He was driving it fairly hard to get that though.

Auto's are amazing, I am ripping out my manual box in my Soarer and sticking an auto in, hate having to change gears all the time, love the sound of an auto too!

Pfft. I hate driving without a clutch, its so boring. But the sound of the fuelcut between gears makes me lol. But sounds out of a car are all very individual, i think it makes the car sound like a videogame..

I've got a auto and i don't like it, but i'm not spending the couple thousand to put in a manual :-)

Agree mate... I wouldn't go back to an auto.. No chance.. jzz30 with a manual should of been factory from the start and auto should of been an option only... I can see why the v8's are auto but a TT! Only good thing about the auto is the launch..

And the instant neck snapping gear changes and continuos power through the gears. if you want a quick car down the strip, leave the manuals at home.
